That's unnecessary. Subtle flames aren't allowed either.

'twas a joke, not a flame.

Smiley faces do not mask flames of people in Comms.

Some of you may be too young or new to remember, but several years ago, there was a campaign started by yours truly called Down With Diapers: Proponents for a PG-13 JC.There were several hundred signitaries in the petition thread (that has been deleted, along with all relevant Comm. threads that spun from it) and many others were silently for it. Though it was still a vocal minority issue, which the JC has been famous for.

What came from it was The Senate Floor (and a successful 13-month long modship ;) ) and that's about it. We in DWD wanted not a new forum but a forum-wide change - instead of 'family friendly', G/PG-rated forums, a PG-13 rating for the JC that would have let a little more of the bawdy into the place, as well as the mature. The conceit was, if the JC is for 13 and older, shouldn't the rating equivalent be PG-13? Maybe the logic was a bit...off, but it worked for hundreds of posts and led to the Senate.

Dagsy said, "If you want mature discussion, the best place to head is to the Senate Floor, where you can have political, religious, sexual discussions, provided that it is done in a mature manner. But if you want a forum established for dirty jokes and things like that. Sorry to tell you, that'll never happen. Its the owners decision, and the administration has no input on it at all."

But in the end, it was the owners' decision to keep PG-13 from the forum and place it in a highly controlled environment. However, I think that though it was a great short-term stopgap ot create the Senate, in the long run, we face more and more of these thread: people who see a slightly older place here, not a kiddie pool. It's not a bar, but it's certainly a high school equivalent. What's that mean these days, a late-night Starbucks? I don't know. Threads like these do indicate the issue wont' go away.

Nor should it. The JC shouldn't be PG, but PG-13. The Site Owners shouldn't be kowtowing to an age group that is one of the smallest represented here. In a poll done by Darth Ludicrous (or the Gatherer) about age, it was revealed that the majority of people are 15-22~, or high school and college. Few people are below that and not many are above it. Maybe you can say there's a strong 22-27 crowed here, but what we've got a majority of is people in education, with access to the internet provided either at home or a dorm room. These same people are also either actively involved in puberty or past it by several years.

This is not a site frequented by kids, but by young adults. The Site Owners should cater to that group, try to make it appealing to the late high school/college crowd. A way to do this would be a loosening of the tie, a little letting our collective hair down.

Not all of us high schoolers are a bunch of sex adicts or tell dirty jokes. [face_plain]

The best policy is always to kepp it viewable for your youngest members, then everyone upwards can deal with it.

Like you wouldn't watch a hard R movie on your TV with a 13 year old in the room, so you put somthing on that you both can watch, although you can watch that movie he can't.

    See?

    Yes and no.

While beliefs vary, who here would say child porn is okay? There are some absolutes, even if you aren't Christain.

I'd let my 13 year old watch an "R" film. My parents let me see practically anything short of pornography from about 10 on because they knew I could handle it. However, my parents knew me. The owners and mods don't know every 13 year old Johnny or Jill that comes here, and they can't make that decision to go to a true PG-13 in good faith, because some people have different views on what is appropriate for a 13 year old.

I'd say the way the JC is now is perfectly fine, even though I may not agree with some of the decisions on what isn't allowed (Such as WTF? or gay fanfic)

I'm glad for the no-slash fiction rule, that's why I dislike FF.net and "four leter words are a febal mind trying to express itself*."
