OK, in the last section of the Dark Side Sourcebook, which sets the scene for a Hyperspace Wars (5,000 years prior to ANH) campaign, it says "It (the Republic) has a deep and long-lived relationship with the Jedi Order, whose members consider themselves to be guardians of the Republic and all it stands for." OK, uh, why the heck has Luke insisted on keeping the New Jedi Order separate from the government? Maybe it does have something to do with the fact that Kyp went loco and vaped a couple inhabited star systems, but all this distrust of the Jedi and the indecision wracking Luke would not have happened if they had taken their lessons from this period. Back in the old days, the Jedi actually went out and kicked butt on baddies like the Sith, the Krath, the Lorell Raiders, the folks who enslaved the Lorrdians. At Yavin and Ruusan the Jedi sent out fleets and armies to combat evil. Jedi battlemasters commanded thousands of troops and led commando raids. It was after they went and got all complacent, figuring they'd taken care of the Sith, that all hell broke loose. Lesson learned from this: STOP MEDITATING, GET OFF YER ARSE, AND KICK THE CRAP OUTTA THE VONG!

The reason that Luke and the other jedi don't go out and kick the crap out of the vong as much as they should is because they don't know much about the old jedi order.

Also, the jedi of old had nothing to do with the government of the republic. The were the "guardians". That does not mean "troopers". It means that if something major happened or was about to happen, the jedi went out as defenders of peace, not as the lackies of some supreme chancellor.

The New Republic didn't fully support the New Jedi Order, because it didn't sanction or allow them to do the things they do. This turns the public image of the Jedi from "defenders fo the Republic" into vigilantes who take the law into their own hands.

Still, my point stands. The Vong count as a MAJOR threat to the peace. Yet it takes the Jedi a while to stand up and do some damage on the Vong. And Luke distanced the Jedi from the NR since the Jedi Academy trilogy. I'm not saying everyone should join up with Kyp (his anger at the Vong and disregard of friendly casualties speak much of the Dark Side), but the Jedi ought to hook up with the NR military and do some major strategic damage.
