Director JJ Abrams expresses regret to colleague after reading completed script to Star Wars Episode VIII. "It's so good, I wish I were making it." -Abrams. (full article bellow)

This is a big sigh of relief, however I have to say I'm happy he's not coming back, and not because I didn't love his work on Star Wars VII- but because I did. Too often I've seen directors do fantastic work with their first installment, but become burnt out and deliver an underwhelming sequel. The best example I can think of is Joss Whedon's work on the Avengers franchise. I think a fresh face for each installment is the best approach, but a piece of me will wonder what JJ's followup would have been.

More than this, it encourages them to do their absolute best work with the one film they have. There are no second chances if they screw it up or phone it in.

Colin is great for Episode IX. I thoroughly enjoyed Jurassic World, and it had a god awful script. He did great handling the nostalgia with a new story, he's great for Star Wars IMO.

Colin will probably do a great job with IX. The main plot and reveals will already be established in episode VIII. Episode IX will be a lot of battles and light saber duels. Sort of like ROTS. All he needs is another epic score from Williams and everything is pretty much set.

I'm glad they're using three different directors. Never watched Looper, but the episode Ozymandias from Breaking Bad was excellent, so I have some faith in Rian to top VII.

No offense, but I'm not going to miss JJ that much if RJ is everything I hope he is.

I think he did a good job, but one SW movie is enough for any director, unless he's GL, and considering how many complaints the PT gets (I love them personally), maybe even him.

I really would like JJ to return for 9 cant stand that trevorrow is doing it, im sure Rian will do a pretty good job with 8. It will be interesting to see if disney wants JJ to return considering Tfa's critical success.

Fingers crossed they ditch him before we get that close.
This will be interesting to watch, JJ has now expressed regret at not staying on, meaning that maybe disney asked him to do more? He may have been hesitant to accept before the release of Tfa but now the pressure is off due to the movies's success....hmmm interesting to see if disney bring him back, after all he must be the hottest ticket in town at the moment.

Agreed. I've personally never seen any of his films myself, although everyone, no matter who I ask, hold him in such high esteem and says his movies are among the best of the best. The same couldn't really be said for JJ.

You know Treverrow had a hand in the script, right?

Treverrow is such a bad choice to finish the trilogy.

JJ himself did this with Star Trek. Into Darkness was significantly inferior to the original reboot in my opinion. It's a good sign that JJ likes Episode VIII but I am really glad somebody different is taking the reigns. This is one thing that I think really helped the original trilogy, with each installment having a little bit different feel yet still working together.

Isn't Rian Johnson writing both 8 and 9, but only directing 8? And JJ will be producing, so I'm sure he is providing plenty of creative guidance. Sounds like a good team all around.
