But would you really want the bad guy to have an outrageous name like Casanova Frankenstein, Victor Von Doom, or Benedict Cumberbatch?

I was hoping that General Chang would be revamped as Kirks rival/nemisis, with several movies with Ship to Ship combat with Kang, Kor, and Ko'los being major adverseries as well or maybe frenimies?

But terrorists seems to be the go to default baddie these days.

I hope the Klingons get a movie of their own instead of being relegated to bit parts (as it seems they will be and in their cut scene from the 2009 film). It'd be interesting to see how they would take advantage of a Federation weakened by the loss of Vulcan. But I guess expecting any sort of political nuance might be asking too much.

Or maybe the Klingons can be shown as competent tacticians. Maybe we'll even see the aspect that they are supposed to be conquerors, with a portion of their crew being impressed slaves.

Nah, that would be too much to hope for.

Am I reading this right? Perhaps a new villain rather than a rehash? We need new villains in pop culture. Thrill me.

Even if he's new he's still old. Revenge plot rehash and all that.

The Klingons- and even the TOS Romulans- have a lot of room for exploration post-Vulcan. How coukd the Klingons take advantage of the situation? How would the Romulans react to A) the loss of a related species (rivals that they might be- would we see Romulus attempt to woo Vulcan survivors back into the fold?), B) Being implicated in the loss of Vulcan by the actions of Nero? And, C) Federation shipbuilding advancing radically in response to the attack on the Kelvin?

You guys realize you are expecting some sort of nuance from a movie right?

As long as there aren't racist robots and Shia Labadabadoo it'll be decent.

Because the average movie-going audience is too dumb and/or disinterested to understand or care about the astropolitical situation stemming from the fallout of the destruction of Vulcan.

okay, having just seen the imax 3d preview thing i can say the following:

spock's yelling at kirk the whole time to not break the prime directive and not let the mustafarians know about them or their technology and whatnot. so where the hell was he when they brought a mile long spaceship into the atmosphere and crashed it into the ocean three miles from where the native peoples have their temple? were they just hoping that nobody was paying attention to the sky then? did they do it during prayer hour? i damn well notice if there's an airplane in the sky above me, much less a giant spaceship. the ruckus that thing would have made entering the atmosphere and then boiling off a bunch of ocean water as it sank would have been incredible. there's no reason that i can see, film-wise, universe-wise or story-wise to put the spaceship in the water.

so now i am pretty much convinced that this movie really only exists to showcase how super-duper cool computers can make action sequences look these days.

Was the preview only for Imax? I saw the Hobbit last night. There were trailers for half a dozen really dumb scifi movies, but no ST.

If you look around on the internets, you might just be able to find the 9 min preview. That's how I've seen it, but I'm not saying where, to cover my butt. Trust me, do some googling, and you'll find it.

That's too much work. Can you just perform it in puppet show format?
