My thoughts:

A. "Throwing someone under the bus" is being used inappropriately here, as it has been increasingly in the last few years. Implicit in the meaning is a sort of betrayal: you let someone take the fall/receive criticism that they did not deserve. Reporting an employee and underlying for committing a felony doesn't fall under this category at all, unless you ordered them to commit the felony and then reported them to avoid blame yourself.

B. Since this thread is already completely derailed, I'll ask about something that has been bugging me for a few weeks. Does anyone know what happened to Darth Decepticon?

I don't condone or excuse Paterno's actions in this (and Paterno himself admitted before his death he could have done more), but beezel, don't ever EVER equate Paterno's actions in this mess to what Sandusky did. Inexcusable as not doing enough was, PATERNO DID NOT RAPE THOSE BOYS!

C. For what it's worth, Varouj's scenario isn't very much like what happened. There wasn't a mere allegation. Paterno took it seriously enough to call up his superiors and say "we have a problem." Given that's potentialyl as damaging to someone's career as the police phone call, I don't see how his argument (such as it was) was really very strong.

 

I wouldn't go to the cops with second-hand information.

Even with jobs that put your face out in the public like their jobs did? You go to the cops, the media finds out right away, and if you were wrong in your allegations, you just screwed someone over because of a rumor you heard. You go to the administration with the information so they can find out more to see what the crap is going on so if you're wrong, you didn't just destroy someone's life for no reason. Obviously in this situation, he would have been right. But with the information he had at the time, there was no way for him to know that.

 

What about that previous allegation though in 1998? That caused Sandusky, at only age 55, to retire from college football (more than likely would have got a head coaching position somewhere). A pattern of illicit behavior had already been setup with him, so when 2002 comes around, and McQueary sees what he sees, shouldn't Paterno have at the very least thought "Another incident like that with Jerry? Yikes". Should a pattern of behavior account for something?

To tell you the truth, I really don't feel all that bad about this.

Is it a shame? Yes. But much less shameful than passing the buck and then keeping quiet when one of the coaches under you is caught banging a child in the campus showers.
