John Barry is one of my favorite composers. From his work in the James Bond movies to films like Out of Africa to Dances with Wolves, I think he's really great. One of the distinctive things about his scores are lovely string arrangements. The violins always sound great.

I'm one of about three people who will admit to not being a big fan of Dances With Wolves. But I do really like:

    Lion in Winter
    Last Valley
Raise the Titanic (superior to Horner's Titanic score, methinks)

Get the Nic Raines recordings (the only recordings available) for the latter two, but stick with the (slightly shorter) Barry recording of Lion in Winter.

What about the score for Zulu? That was pretty awesome.

Haven't heard Zulu yet. It's on The List.

What about "The Back Hole" as well? I think that is a great piece of musical work, even if it is aping a teeny bit, John Williams SW Stuff.

And any film with Robert Forster, Ernest Borgnine and Maximillian Schell coupled with a love child of C3PO and R2D2 in the form of that Camp Talking Dustbin voiced by Roddy McDowell, and you have a Kitch classic.

I only know him for James Bond, and I love him for that :)

Somebody beat me to Zulu! I love that piece, it is great, especially when Schiess saves Chard, classic! I actually have zulu on DVD, I think it was re-released recently.

Born Free is also a great one. I think it won the Oscar for Best Score. It was the movie with those cute lion cubs.

For some reason he never was one of my favorites. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate his work (which is considered important in Score Land), but with so many composers to choose from, and so little money, I had no choice ;)

I love John Barry. He isn't as good as Williams but I think he is great.

His best score is the score for "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". The music for that film was way ahead of its time.
