This is what Williams said in the video from the concert (or at least somewhat close to it) on YouTube:

John Williams: So in a few weeks I'll receive a first viewing of [Episode VIII]. (distorted audio) And I should know who Rey's father is, we don't know. We'll find out. <audience laughter>

with them starting post production I wouldn't be surprised if they did a teaser trailer for Episode VIII in front of Rogue One.

So glad to hear JW is on board!

I was assuming-seeing as how he was already signed on for Indiana Jones, which isn't going to be out for several years...

can't wait to see what new themes we can look forward to!

I bet a crisp $20 that there will be a love theme between Finn and Kelly Marie Tran's character.

And different wines have different characteristics. TFA followed ROTS, and they are very different. But the scores are perfect in and of themselves and for their respective films.

And the "following" part depends on which order you watch the movies. I prefer to watch in Episode order, so whenever I have my I-VII marathon, I imagine the mood going from the relatively serene ROTJ score to the more adventurous TFA score pretty smoothly.

Really? JW only got to see "bit's and pieces" of the film while he was scoring it? It's a wonder JW didn't just walk away from it. Is Abrams mad?

Interesting he said "father" not "parents" but then again he did think Rey was a Skywalker based on TFA. I wonder if he'll be disappointed when he gets that first cut..

I dunno. Williams seemed to be really positive about the TFA scoring process in interviews, referring to the recording schedule as "luxurious".

J.J is all about secrecy and the "mystery box." He shows the full cut to no one. Or it just wasn't available at the time JW was scoring it. They have way more time with VIII.

I'm not sure at all this is a factual statement! can't remember JW or JJ ever saying something like this. Source? i'm not saying it didn't happen like that, but sometimes fans tend to get carried away with what they think is happening/happened and project themselves a little too much into all that stuff. I'm not saying this is the case, i just find this very surprising (and JW seemed to enjoy the writing/scoring sessions) if there's an article when it's clearly written, i'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Actually does anyone feel that just because the film is darker the score doesn't necessarily have to be darker because I know that we'll see Luke and Rey together training or just talking and that would require a combination of both of their themes at this point Luke doesn't have Luke Skywalker only theme per se his tangible theme I think the closest is the emperor's throne room and the light saber, I would have to say that it shows the duality of the force and how Luke in the emperor's Throne Room fighting his father almost gave in to the dark side cutting his hand off now we go on a rant these are just my thoughts feel free to correct me but because Empire was a darker film Than A New Hope the score was exquisite and I'm hoping that we can get that quality again in the sequel trilogy

One of the Pieces from the TFA Soundtrack that really stands out to me is "The Attack on the Jakku Village". This Piece has the sort of dark and brooding music Williams always does consistently well. Since Episode VIII will likely be a little more slower paced than Episode VII, it should give the music more time to breathe; and allow for more of this type of music.

I also look forward to Williams writing a "Cantina" style "In Universe" musical Piece for the rumored Casino Scene on Planet Dubrovinik, since he didn't write the music played in Maz's Castle. :D

I thought I was the only one. :)

I thought a lot of the score for TFA was closer to his prequel work to be honest, with tracks like 'The Starkiller', 'Rey's Theme', 'The Scavenger', 'Finn's Confession', 'Snoke', 'Kylo's Theme' and 'The Ways of the Force'.

Thanks, it's a lot easier to find a thread through the official tag rather than finding something in the maze of discussion.

although there are other threads that should be official ones too.

IS John starting the music sooner on VIII than he did with TFA?
