Great update! I liked seeing how Lukia's recent experiences and new life path (which she shall express with blue Jedi robes :p) make her feel a bit disconnected from her friends on returning to Coruscant.

The mentions of how everyone lives with their parents because rent is so expensive there were a nice touch of realism. It sounds really plausible, especially for the high-rent upper levels that actually have sanitation and aren't plagued by rakghouls (or whatever it is that lives in the bowels of Coruscant.)

Lukia's enthusiasm for a life of adventure is nice to see after all her struggling in earlier chapters -- though it sounds like she'll be in trouble if she doesn't keep in mind that Jedi aren't the only ones who matter.

Lukia, you know what they say about adventure and excitement and Jedi, don't you?? Of course, try telling a Skywalker that and, well, they won't listen. :p Great update!!

AN: Thanks for reading everyone! I don't usually write my own feelings into fics, but that last entry was a sum-up of my feelings over the past like year. ALSO, sorry for the delay in the update - I am helping my own grandpa (the world's STUBBORNEST HUMAN BEING) fix-up my new place. My past few days has been like this diary come to life, but with 10 times the swearing, sarcasm and old-fart jokes.

    Entry 14

I woke up this morning on my grandfather’s couch - grateful that I have my own chambers now (I’m sitting in my chambers now, they’re pretty basic - a bunk, closet full of robes, a desk and a refresher- but they are pretty sweet). My dad wanted my grandpa to go see the healers today so him and I went with him.

I quickly had a shower, put on my robes and walked out into the kitchen to see my dad and grandpa arguing. I’ve seen them disagree on many of occasions, but rarely argue.

“DAD! You are going to see Master Tekli! She even has a doctor coming in from Coruscant General.” My dad was pacing the kitchen.

My grandpa was sitting at the table, drinking tea, calmly. “The doctors on Naboo did a full physical. They said other than the pneumonia that I was fine. There is no need to waste anyone’s time.”

    “What about the neurological symptoms?”

My grandfather turned and glared at me. “You told him I was sleep-walking?”

I glared back. “I was worried.”

My dad took a calming breath. “We all are Dad. I had a dream that I was giving an eulogy. I don’t know whose it was, but I know that I will have to give yours eventually. I just would like a little warning if it’s coming.”

“Besides,” I broke in. “You said you wanted to visit Aunt Leia. If we are headed down to the halls of healing, we might as well make Dad happy.”

“Fine,” my grandfather said, “but nothing is wrong with me.”

We headed down to the halls of healing and thus began a morning of tests and medical questions.

Finally, after hours, Master Tekli and Dr. Loacan sat down with us in the Master Healer’s office. “We have some good news and some bad news.”

My dad paled. “Give us the bad.”

“Luke, it looks like you will be driving Ben insane for a few more years,” Master Tekli said.

“You are in almost perfect health. We are a bit concerned about some massive inflammation in your right knee and hand joints. We want you to start Corosal injections for the joints and for you to consider starting to walk with an aid,” Dr. Loacan.

My grandfather frowned. “Like a hover-walker.”

“It might be a good idea,” I said, “I know how painful walking can be for you.”

    “No,” he said, firmly.

“What about just a cane? We have a couple here for you to try out.”

“Fine,” my grandpa begrudgingly said. “Is that it?”

“Yes,” the doctor said. “You are in amazing health for a man your age.”

“What about the sleepwalking?” I asked

Master Tekli made a motion that looked like a human shrug. “We could find no medical reason for the episode.”

My grandpa nodded. “I have a feeling it was an one-time event.”

My dad turned to glare at him. “You know what is was, don’t you?”

“Ben, I am not getting into this with you.”

    “Oh yes you are!”

“Dad,” I said, putting an had on his arm, “Perhaps you should let it go if Grandpa promises to start using a cane.”

    “Fine,” my dad said.

    My grandpa nodded.

We left a few minutes later; my grandfather was using a cane.

“I gotta run to a senate meeting. I shall see you two at dinner,” my dad announced before hurrying off.

I then glared at my grandpa. “Just because he’s letting it go, doesn’t mean I am.”

“Please, Lukia. If I think to will continue to be an issue, I’ll tell you. But I really think it will only be an one time event.”

“Fine, but if it comes up again, you have to tell me.”

“Alright,” he said. “Do you want to come see Aunt Leia with me?”

“Yeah, sure,” I said. “Aku and Anik wanted to spar with me or something now that I’m back, but I can come say hi.” I knew my grandpa wanted some time alone with his twin.

My Great Aunt Leia was an remarkable woman, or so I am told. Before I was born, my Great Uncle Han grew very ill will a debilitating illness which affected his memory. He eventually died when I was just a toddler. Leia spent 10 years caring for his every need, even though there were days that he didn’t know who she was. When he died, she just kinda broke. There was the suspected depression, but then she started to lose control of her body. It’s called spinal nerve death. It was very late-onset in her case, but it is still a horrible way to die.

My grandpa and I entered the long term care ward and let ourselves into her room, which is decorated with pinks and flowers and holos - it looks like any other old lady’s room. Leia was propped up on the bed, a ventilator was coming out of her neck. She was half asleep, staring at the view screen. My dad assured my grandpa yesterday that many people had been in to visit her daily while we were away.

My grandpa sat on the chair beside her bed and I stood behind him. “Hey there,” he said, getting her attention. He reached and held her hand.

Her face lit up. “Hey. Long time, no see,” her voice was weak and scratchy. She then saw me. “I heard what you did.”

I grinned. “Well, someone has to keep the old farts on the Jedi council in line.”

She looked at my grandfather. “So much like Mara…”

My grandpa smiled proudly. “I know.”

I shifted uncomfortably. “I’m going go meet up with Anik and Aku.”

“Alright, I’ll see you in a few hours,” my grandpa said.

“Good to see you Lukia,” Leia said with a smile.

“Goodbye,” I said with a smile as I gave her a gentle hug.

    “Goodbye,” she whispered back.

Still puzzled about the sleepwalking but glad, very glad! Luke's in excellent health. Yes go with the least-cumbersome thing, a cane versus a hover-walker. :p

Luke's not about to share whatever the sleepwalking was about -- interesting. Wonder if it was a message or vision of some sort. At least they managed to talk him into using a cane (well, somewhat. Maybe.)

The visit with Leia was bittersweet. She's really been hit hard, as makes sense given what happened.

[face_laugh] Aww. The circumstances might be heartbreaking (seeing old age get to them all realistically definitely twists a little around the heart), but Leia's still got her sense of humor.

    Entry 15

I found all three of my brothers in one of the training rooms, sitting, shirtless, on the benches, waiting for me.

“So,” Aku said. “Little Miss Orange is back on Coruscant, thinking she’s some sort of Jedi Apprentice.”

I rolled my eyes as I discarded my robe and set it on on of the benches. “Your just upset that I can kick your butt now.”

Jace smiled. “Welcome back Little Lu. We missed you.” He gave me a hug. Before the Brauronia incident, Jace had been my lightsaber instructor.

“Thanks,” I said. “I missed you too. The nicknames, not so much.”

“Well then prove that you are no longer Nugget-Bunches,” Anik said, giving me a hug as well.

“Alright. Who’s butt do I have to kick first?” I asked. I had one advantage over them. They all had fought me before, but I learned much under my grandpa’s tutelage.

“I’ll go first,” Aku said. “I’ll go easy on you.”

I grinned as we walked onto the blue mats. “Fine. It’ll just conserve my energy.”

We both ignited our lightsabers. Mine was a white-blue, his was purple. We clashed. I knew Aku liked long, swinging strokes, so I got near him with a series of short strokes and knocked the wind out of him with a swift punch to the gut. He was on his butt - in shock - just minutes after it started. I turned to Anik and Jace and bowed.

    “Who’s next?”

I beat Anik with a bit of difficulty. Then I had to face Jace. It was a pretty fierce fight, which was eventually interrupted by our father. He came in, watched with a smile on his face, then, after some time, stood up. “Alright, alright. I have a duty as a father to break up fights like this.”

Jace and I both turned off our lightsabers, then Jace decided to kick my feet from underneath me. I landed on the floor with an ofph.

The rest of the day was fairly uneventful. Our dad took us for dinner where we bugged each other about everything.

Ha! Lukia and her brothers are adorable. It makes me happy that she seems to get along with her family, given that the Jedi as a group seem to be wary of her.

    Entry 16

The past few weeks have been pretty hectic [missions with my grandfather, father and brothers, and Raena’s bridezillaness (which I won’t go into, but let’s just say I’ve been using ‘galactic crises’ as an excuse to get out of a lot of bantha shavit)]. But there is a reason why I’m in my grandfather’s living room, awake at 300 hours.

My great Aunt Leia just died. I got a call from my dad just after I went to bed, telling me to rush my grandpa down to the medcenter. We were one of the first groups to arrive, but we were shortly joined by my dad, brothers, Jaina, Emperor Fel, Mirri and her husband Vain, and Jaina and Jag’s other kids: Jiol, Hana and Lian. They were all on Coruscant because they knew Leia’s time was short.

She died shortly after midnight. My grandfather was holding one of her hands, while Jaina held the other. She was silent and at peace at the end. Anik and I left the room to notify the press. We were asked for a press conference then and there. Jace and Aku thankfully joined us for it and brought us robes. I was chosen as the one to speak. I guess because I knew her the least.

I was poised as I informed the few reporters directly. Yet, I was also informing the entire galaxy of a passing of a heroine. I kept it short.

“Leia Organa Solo, the last Princess of Alderaan and former chief of state, died shortly after midnight. She went in peace, surrounded by family. We ask for privacy in our time of grieving. Thank you.”

My brothers then led me away and up to our grandfather’s chambers. Our father was next to him in the living room. Grandpa looked calm, but his hands was shaking as he drank his tea. The four of us silently sat.

Eventually Grandpa put down his cup. “I’m going to head to bed now.” He grabbed his cane and stiffly walked off.

“Go, you guys,” I said, “I’ll stay the night.”

It took some convincing to get my dad to go, but I’m alone now.

    Entry 17

Today was Raena’s wedding. Yes, I had to deal with that in the midst of my great-aunt’s death. My grandfather hasn’t said two words in the past two days, my father has been crying in the refresher and I left them for some stupid wedding. I honestly thought about not going, but I had already bought the dumb dress. I was more or less a droid. I got my hair and make up done and followed the other girls in my hideous pooffie bright pink dress. Never put a red-head in pink. It does not work. I wore my lightsaber under the skirt, just out of spite. I stood and wore a hollow smile at the ceremony.

After dinner at the reception, Raena came up to me to give me a hug. “I just wanted to thank you for being here and supporting me. I know you have the funeral tomorrow, you can go if you want.”

I bit my lip. I had forgotten that I was escorting my grandfather to the funeral tomorrow. He is giving the eulogy. “But it’s your big day.”

“And you have a even bigger day tomorrow. I don’t know how you do it all Lukia, but go, I know you want to.”

I gave her a soft smile. “Thanks. I guess I’ll see ya around.”

    She nodded. “Of course.”

We both knew that was a lie. I would still see her, but it would not be the same. She’s married and I’m a Jedi. It’s two different galaxies.

I hailed a hover-cab and was on my way home. I went to my grandfather’s chambers first. He and my father were on the couch, eyes stained red with a data-pad in front of them. They were working on the eulogy. They both looked up and started killing themselves laughing.

“I hate you both,” I said, sarcastically. They had probably needed a good laugh. “I am never being a bridesmaid ever again.” I chucked the too-small shoes towards the compactor in the kitchen.

“You look beautiful,” my grandpa said.

“That dress on the other hand, is just bad,” my dad added.

“It’s getting burned,” I mumbled on the way out.

    Entry 18

This morning I got up. Unlike yesterday, a bright pink dress was not waiting for me (it was in a heap on the floor - I gotta find some matches to burn it). Instead a black set of robes and a black skirt waited for me. With more ceremony than yesterday I dressed then did my hair and make up. I then went to my grandpa’s chambers. My father was already there. My grandpa seemed confused. He was sitting at the table, staring at his tea.

My dad looked at me with sad eyes.

“If you gotta go help with the prep work…”

“No, I have Jace and the twins looking after it.”

I nodded and took a seat at the small table.

After a long while, my grandpa spoke. “Lukia, you’d better make an appointment with a doctor for me after the ceremony.”

“Of course,” I said, taking out my comm link. “Are you not feeling well?”

    “Something is wrong,” he said.

    “What?” my dad demanded.

My grandfather did not look at him. He closed his eyes and clenched his hand. “I know he is very close to me and I know I love him very much, but I don’t know that man standing in the kitchen.” A tear ran down his cheek. “Who is he?”

My dad gasped, as did I. I looked from my dad to my grandpa. They were both crying. I started to as well.

I gently reached across the table and took his hand. “That is Ben, your son.”

Something seemed to click and he started crying harder. “Ben.” He got up and gave him a hug. “I’m sorry.”

“Do you still think you can give the eulogy?” my dad asked. My grandpa nodded.

I made the appointment as we made our way down to the central courtyard where many Jedi and political dignitaries sat. We made our way to the dais where the rest of the family was located.

The funeral was beautiful and the eulogy my grandfather gave was fitting of a heroine.

Jaina and my grandpa were the ones to light the pyre. We sat there for a long while as Leia Organ Solo became one with the universe again.

Man, I fell way behind on my reading. DRL will do that to you. I like how you worked in a bride's maid and a bridezilla into your story HA! Write what you know. So you killed off Leia and gave Luke dementia?! That sucks that he didn't recognize Ben. My mom died from Alzheimer's and that was a horrible fate. How much sadder is this story going to get? I'm getting depressed. :(

    Entry 19

I sat with my brothers in my grandpa’s chambers after cleaning up the funeral. Our dad had taken our grandpa to the healers.

“What do you mean ‘he didn’t know who Dad was’?” Jace was practically interrogating me.

“He said ‘I don’t know that man standing in the kitchen’. He seemed to snap out of it as soon as I told him it was dad,” I explained.

“Could it have been stress from Aunt Leia’s death?” Anik asked.

“No,” I said, thinking back to the sleepwalking incident. “He’s been off for awhile, but her death has probably exasperated the problem.”

Aku sighed. “I guess I’d better tell you guys this. The other day he sent me to his office to get a data-pad for him. I switched it on to make sure I had the right one and I could barely make out the notes he had written during the last council meeting. What I could make out made no sense.”

“Should he still be Grand Master?” Anik asked.

I looked at him. “Dude, you do realize Dad does 95% of Grandpa’s work without him knowing it. Everyone but Grandpa knows Dad is Grand Master without the title.”

We then sensed them nearing. They entered, Grandpa was leaning heavily on his cane. He looked weary and a bit sick. He sat in his lounger.

“Do you want me to tell them?” Dad asked.

“No, go make me some tea,” Grandpa said. “Kids, I was hoping to keep this hidden for awhile longer, but your great aunt’s death put too much of a strain on me. I have neurodegradation. My immune system is slowly attacking my brain. I’ve known for a few months now - I hid it from you guys as well as the healers. The symptoms include sleep disturbances, confusion, memory loss as well as fine and gross motor skill deterioration. I got medication to help with the symptoms and I’ll be going in for weekly neuro-regeneration therapy to slow down the progress - I had a quick first dose, that is why I’m a bit out of it. I’m going to need a lot of help in upcoming months. That is why tomorrow my last act as Grand Master will be to…” He looked at Dad. “What’s the word?”

    “Promote.”

“Thank you. Promote Lukia to the rank of Jedi Knight and your father to Grand Master. I have already discussed this with the other masters on the council.”

Dad then brought over the tea and gave it to Grandpa.

“Lukia,” he said after taking a sip. “I wanted this announcement to be special - you have worked so hard. I am promoting you because you are ready, not because I’m sick.”

“Thank you,” I said, forcing a smile.

“I also would like it if you were my care-taker. You can say no, but I don’t want to be put in the assisted-living care ward, and your brothers lack a certain… sensitivity I will need to be myself throughout most of this.”

“Sensitivity?” I deadpanned. “I don’t think anyone has used that to describe me.” I turned to Dad. “Is he delusional?”

“No,” Dad said, “he wants someone to abuse him in his last days so that he doesn’t feel like he’s already dead.”

“That I can do,” I said. “In that case, you all need to get out.”

I ushered everyone out and I turned to my grandfather. “I think it is bedtime for you.”

He nodded. “I think that is a good idea. We can talk more after your knighting ceremony. Thank you.”

    Entry 20

Today I was knighted. It was a small ceremony in the Jedi Council chambers with few spectators other than the masters and my family, yet it was being broadcast to every Jedi in the galaxy.

Grandpa stood with his cane in the middle of the room. He looked strong in his black ceremonial robes. “Lukia Jade Beru Skywalker.”

I stepped forward in my green and blue robes and knelt at his feet. He placed his hand on my shoulder. “You have exhibited strength and maturity beyond your years. You are wise and show compassion. You are honest in your weaknesses and know you still have much to learn. It is my honour to bestow upon you the title of Jedi Knight. You may rise.”

I rose, shook his hand and then gave him a hug.

I then retreated back to where my brothers were standing. We watched as Grandpa made a short spiel about being a grand master, then he called Dad up. He gave him the title of Grand Master. They hugged for a long time.

Afterwards my grandpa and I sat down for tea and caff. “How are you feeling?” I asked.

    “Very proud,” he replied.

The circumstances are sad, but this continues to be fantastic in its depiction of the Skywalkers. Love their caring and respect for each other -- and their unflinching sense of humor when nothing else will do. I'm so glad that Lukia got to be Knighted by her grandfather. Entry 21

This morning I woke up very tired. I spent hours last night reading up on neurodegradation. It was extremely depressing to know what my grandfather will go through in the last few years of his life. I got ready for my first day as ‘care-taker’ then went into my grandpa’s chambers.

I could sense he was in his bedroom, so for the first time since I was a little girl, I entered my grandpa’s chambers. He was on the made bed, already dress, labelling holos using flimsy and pieces of sticky tack. The problem was, he could barely hold the writing utensil. What he did manage to write was unreadable.

    “Good morning,” I said.

He looked up and looked slightly embarrassed, like a kid making something he didn’t want anyone else to see. “Good morning…. I… ah… read that if you continually remind yourself of the important things - like family names - early on in the disease, you are less likely to forget them,” he explained. “I was planning on covering my dresser with everyone’s holo and name.”

I gave him a soft smile. “Why don’t we have breakfast and then I can help you? We have a full day of figuring out what to do with our days now that you are retired.”

“Don’t use the R word,” he said with a scowl. “The other masters are still letting me sit on the council for now. But breakfast sounds like a great idea.” He grabbed his cane and got up. “Does this mean you are cooking for me now?”

I shrugged as I walked beside him. “I guess so. This mission didn’t exactly come with a job description other than ‘keep Gramps out of trouble.’”

He let out a light laugh. “That might prove more difficult than you expect.”

I gave him his medication then I made him tea, me caff and we ate warm yeast cakes with fruit.

Afterwards, we sat on his bed. He told me what to write on each label. I labeled a picture of myself, my brothers and my father, and many of the Fel clan. His hands shook as he handed me the next holo. It was Leia.

“Write: Leia - twin sister - deceased.”

I did as he asked. The next few holos he handed me were all of people who had died. He had lost so many people. The last one he handed me was of Mara. I had seen this holo many times. Grandpa kept it on his bedside table. It had been taken just a few years before she died. She and my grandpa were smiling brightly. He looked so young.

“Write: Mara - Wife, Best Friend, Love - deceased.”

I smiled as I did this. I stuck the label on the base of the holo projector. “I’m assuming you want this on your nightstand.”

“Yes,” he said, taking it from me. He placed it by his bed. I arranged the others on his dresser.

    “Now what?” I asked.

He checked his chromo. “Well, it’s still another three hours till lunch, and another five till the council meeting today. I don’t have any healer appointments today. What do retired people do?”

I shrugged. “Get hobbies? Annoy young people?”

He raised his eyebrow. “Annoying your father sounds like a good hobby.”

I nodded. “Get your cane, we are going to visit the Grand Master.”

We slowly made our way to the Grand Master’s office. We entered without knocking (I always did it when my grandpa was GM).

My dad looked at us from behind the desk. He looked totally comfortable. “I’m only 2 hours into the job and the two of you are already barging in here.”

I flopped down onto the couch while my grandpa sat himself down onto a chair. “I’m just here to see how you are easing into the position.”

“And we are bored,” I added.

My dad rolled his eyes. “I’m easing into my ‘new position’ just fine. You have been preparing me for this for the past fifty years.” He then turned to me. “And I have something to keep you two busy. Master Tekli wants you to attend some basic care-taker classes with her. She’s also going to teach you both some basic healer techniques. She’ll send you some sort of schedule.”

    I nodded, “Sounds fun.”

We let my dad get back to work and spent most of the day looking up ways to help his memory. I can really tell that he is most concerned with losing his memory.

I attended the council meeting with him. I sat beside him, taking notes for him.

My day was pretty boring and I think, unless some scary Sith monster attacks tomorrow, the next few months for me will be pretty calm. But I know after the life he has had, my grandpa deserves some calm and I know he enjoys my company.
