After the first scene of the movie (which is a quasi-horror introductory scene like the "shoot her!" scene in the original) the stage is set for the movie via a BBC report with a bunch of expository dialogue about the situation on the island. Among other things crawling across the ticker on the bottom is, "US President questions 'existence of dinosaurs in the first place.'"

Yikes. This was awful. The problem isn't even that it's a rehash; in fact, the on-island stuff is completely over by about the 20-minute mark. It's that where it goes instead is so ridiculous. Basically, the plot of the movie is that the a formerly dormant volcano on the JW island is erupting again, and all of the dinosaurs are going to die unless somebody intervenes. The US government holds Congressional hearings and after Malcolm's testimony decides not to intervene. Cut to Claire who is now working at a non-profit trying to collect donations to fund a private operation to save the dinos. It's not going well, until she gets a call from a bedridden, in-failing-health Generic Billionaire (played by James Cromwell) who, in a stupid retcon, it turns out was Hammond's co-financier for the original JP. He wants to self-finance the dino rescue. Claire then recruits Owen to help her, and off they go with the privatized military squad. They get there, and it turns out that the squad is actually working for Generic Billionaire's Evil Caretaker, who has a nefarious plan to use the dinos for further genetic engineering experiments to "weaponize" them. Owen and Claire are ostensibly dispatched on the island, but they manage to stow away in the cargo of the huge carrier as it leaves the island. To this point, the movie is fine if completely unremarkable. The "plot" is as thin as it gets, but you have to admire the audacity of some of the shots on the volcanic island. The highlight is actually the "drowning gyrosphere," which is amazing in 3D; you feel like you're really stuck in that flooding glass bubble. [/COLOR]

It's all downhill from here, though. The dinos are all brought back to Generic Billionaire's mansion, and this is where it just goes completely off the rails. Apparently to the complete ignorance of GB, there is a huge dinosaur-zoo compound in the basement of his mansion, which of course has a wing where genetic scientists led by Dr. Henry Wu are furiously at work genetically modifying the dino DNA. Using the newly acquired dinosaurs, they create some fearsome new specimens and then invite hundreds of Bond villain-types from around the world for a massive auction of the dinosaurs. Everyone gathers in a massive auction hall and the dinosaurs, one-by-one, are wheeled out in cages by an elaborate staging mechanism. Each dinosaur fetches millions of dollars, but the piece de resistance is a weaponized hybrid raptor that can be trained to attack laser-painted targets. It's just a prototype and it's not for sale, but when one of the Bond villains dramatically offers 25 million for it, escalating bids ensue, and the Evil Butler decides on the spot to offer the prototype for sale after all. But, wouldn't you know it, it uses its Highly Advanced Cognitive Abilities to escape its cage and then runs around the lecture hall eating the attendees. This is where the movie goes from ridiculous to merely tedious; a quasi-horror sequence ensues where the prototype ventures from room to room in the house, seeking Generic Billionaire's adorable granddaughter (whose character has an entire subplot that's so pointless it's not even worth explaining here.) Basically the only reason this character exists is that we have somebody to be afraid for when the prototype prowls through the house, since we are happily cheering as it eats the Bond villains. In the end, Owen and Claire save Adorable Granddaughter, but all is not resolved yet. An accident of sorts has caused poisonous gas to begin overflowing the massive dinosaur-zoo, and they are all going to die unless they are released. Claire dramatically hovers her hand over an "OPEN FRONT DOOR" button (which may as well be labeled "SEQUEL POSSIBILITIES") but, at the urging of Owen, decides not to press it. As Owen praises her for having made the right decision, the door suddenly opens anyway; Adorable Granddaughter has decided to press it instead. ("They're alive, just like me.") The dinosaurs en masse escape the compound/mansion, and the entire incident instigates another Congressional Hearing. A montage of the free dinosaurs in various places of the United States plays, over which Malcolm ominously testifies that now dinosaurs are intermingled with the general human population, and we have no idea what's going to happen. "Welcome to Jurassic World."

If the movie doesn't sound awful from the synopsis I gave, let me assure you that it is, especially the quasi-horror sequence of the prototype prowling the mansion looking for the Adorable Granddaughter. Everything in it has been done before: the fake-out edits, the "everyone thinks they're safe, but then the dinosaur begins turning the door handle" bits, everything. By far the most ridiculous thing about it is the idea that the Evil Butler has been running this massive operation in the basement the entire time, and Cromwell's character, sitting in bed all day, has absolutely no idea, even as the ridiculous dinosaur auction takes place. Admittedly I haven't paid too much attention to the development of this movie, but from the trailers I've seen, I thought more or less the whole movie was going to take place outdoors either on the island or dealing with the large-scale ramifications of the dinosaurs leaving the island (i.e the huge dinosaur attacking the surfers.) Roughly 75% of the movie actually takes place in Cromwell's mansion, and it's a claustrophobic setting only rendered worse by the sheer ridiculousness of the dinosaur auction. (How was this hundred-million-dollar auction of "weaponized dinosaurs" marketed around the world without any authorities catching the slightest wind of it?) Clearly, the sequel is going to be about the large-scale ramifications of the dinosaur escape, but since the auction in the movie was completely ruined and therefore entirely inconsequential, that should have just been what this movie was about. After the movie ended, I said it should have just been called "Jurassic House."

This movie probably has the most palpable "this franchise is completely out of gas" air about it since Rocky V, but then again, the premise set up at the end of movie has potential for interest, even though it will probably just be the plot of TLW on a larger scale, similar to how JW was that to JP1. I guess they just got greedy trying to pad it out with a middle installment, but I have a feeling the word-of-mouth on this is going to be horrendous, so it could hurt the franchise in the long run.

I have literally only two positive things to say about this movie: There's a subtle-but-hilarious jab at Trump in the few minutes (keep your eye on that news ticker) and, as I said above, the "drowning gyrosphere" sequence is terrific in 3D.

It's weird, I both enjoyed the film, and agree with your review at the same time.

I think the horror aspect went a bit too far,

and guessed the little girl reveal quite early on

. Whilst I somewhat disliked the whole weaponised dinosaur plot from JW, it does feel like something Michael Crichton would have done (especially if you have read his other books.)
One thing I did wonder... what would have happened if the Indominus incident never occured, what would have happened to the park then...

Amazon just sent my JW Fallen Kingdom soundtrack I pre ordered the CD they say it will be here tomorrow in the mail!

I don't know how this film will be received in the states but based on how the box office has been awesome in Europe and Asia I think so far people are loving it to bits so to speak! My Entire Family except me is going to Disney on the 21st and staying for about a week and I don't drive so I cant see JW till after opening weekend but my little sister is coming home on the 25th so that is when I will see it!

Ugh. This movie.

JP is in my top 5. Like TLW. Liked JW, even though it’s big and dumb.

This move starts off fantastic. Loved the opening. Loved the moral questions raised.

The island stuff was boarder line but still good.

Then it just goes off the rails. So many really forced moments for JP but fine so much worse.
The worst is the ‘grand daughter’ plot.

The really annoying sidekick. Felt like a character out of Godzilla 1998.

Can’t believe they have so much money and approved this!

There's a pretty decent Lego Jurassic World on the Netflixs (and on the youtubes!) that is a fairly accurate representation of Jurassic World in 22 minutes if one doesn't have the time to invest fully in watching the first Jurassic World film

I'm going to be extremely disappointed in the moviegoing populace if this train wreck of a movie isn't being savaged over the next few days.

But then again, The Dark Knight Rises is in IMDB Top 250 instead of the Bottom 100, so probably not.

(And no, I'm not some film snob. I loved the first JW)

JW doesn't have any pretentions of being anything more than "Jurassic Park-on-20-years-of-improved-CGI steroids." This movie tries to add narrative and thematic complexity and instead it's a total campfest.

If they wanted to transcend the "Dinosaurs run amok on island theme park" premise, they should have explored the "Do extinct creatures artificially brought back have the same 'rights' as other 'real' endangered species?" angle that is only hinted at here.

Ipso facto, The Dark Knight Rises is a cinematic masterpiece. You have brought me reassurance and clarity, and I thank you.

Also Wock, we've hijacked the Jurassic Park thread on the day before the movie releases. Surely that represents some sort of accomplishment.

Bruce Wayne fights to preserve his family in The Dark Knight Rises, the innocent people of Gotham, and sacrifices his way of life for them in the most valiant of methods, by detonating an atomic bomb on his head. Bruce Wayne is, in fact, a variation of Carl Winslow. The same cannot be said of Star-Lord.
