Honestly GRRM on a Star Wars project would be a dream come true for me.

I guess you read that first sentence and stopped reading.

 

Given that this script for this movie is, per Boyega's own words, "much darker" than TFA, I doubt that we get any overt comic relief characters. You still have C3PO, R2, and BB-8 around for that after all.

 

I also don't think she's going to have a ton of screen time. There are just too many other characters that take priority first.

 

She could well be a medic looking after Finn.

 

No, I read it all. I just don't agree with it.

If this conversation was taking place 30 years ago and this casting announcement had been about Martin Short, my reaction would be exactly the same.

Nope, not at all. It's the revealing dubious quality of the phrasings.

Right now, the sad social commentary based on almost nothing is that she's going to be a slapstick goofy techy alien sidekick companion incapable of being a love-interest because...random China, Japan, which has jack-all to do with her last name.

 

I don't know... I think she's cute. This is not a direct response to you, but it's funny how everyone is quick to jump on the "not a love interest" bandwagon.
Sometimes the very same people who claim people who don't think Rey and Finn are endgame are being racist... Go figure.

Kelly is cute, and she's Asian. Yes, there are better looking Asian women out there, but she's cute enough.

 

Isn't Laura Dern a bit too old to be a Knight of Ren? I was under the impression that they were traitors from the New Jedi Order.

 

I mean when they were standing together in the vision, I did picture them probably being younger. Especially since Kylo is their master apparently. But then again, I'd be willing to buy BDT being one of them, so Laura Dern is completely out of the question either I guess.

Nor is this girl, because they were all masked and wearing clothing that made determining gender pretty much impossible.

 

And she heals him using only the power of laughter a la Children's Hospital.

 

But Tran is 5' 2", a vast contrast to Driver's 6' 2"

 

And I trust Nina Gold, the casting director who rarely ever misses.

 

The worst thing that can happen to Star Wars is for the lead and supporting characters to be boring. Boyega and Isaac have great comic timing, and I would argue that Daisy has that spark as well (though with a bit more of that Hamill-style eagerness). Casting new actors that understand comedy is a great sign, IMO.

I was just going to let this go, but this knee-jerk habit of impugning the motives of anyone who says or implies or even hints at anything even with the remote possibility of coming within umpteen parsecs of being negative about some member of a protected/victim class has got to stop.

She's a bleeping COMIC ACTRESS. It isn't racist to speculate that maybe she was cast because of her abilities as a COMIC ACTRESS. Maybe she wasn't, maybe she was cast because she's really got hidden depth and range that she hasn't had an opportunity to display, in which case, AWESOME.

But if not, if she's in fact been cast because of what HER EXISTING BODY OF WORK implies is WHAT SHE DOES, then I think people should be able to say, ya know, I'm interested to see where they go with that, because that isn't the type of character Star Wars has had a lot of success with in the past, without being called racists.

 

Dude, it's great to have someone in Star Wars to be witty and exchange banter with others on screen, but at the end of the day, Star Wars in not a comedy and I am more concerned with actors who can give dramatically powerful performances rather than be a comedian.
