Looked ahead and read some of the spoilers; some of the stuff is pretty messed up and shocking :\

We all grew up knowing the Empire was evil, but adding this new sadistic element will be interesting to see how the audience reacts.

I'm glad the show is going for a sadistic Empire.

If the entire show were like the shorts, we'd have to wonder why the Rebels even cared about fighting the Empire, other than to try to get a spot on a variety show.

I dislike sadism for the sake of sadism. I'd prefer an emotionlessly cruel Empire, that simply doesn't give a damn if its subjects live or die, so long as it remains in control. Sadism is for fools and Saturday morning cartoon villains.

Oh, don't worry about that. I think I know exactly what spoiler DanielUK is referring to , and it's about as emotionlessly cruel as you can get.

    Just don't repeat the Denning-verse.
People will die violently and be massively oppressed but don't go overboard on the injuries and mutilations!

Rebels won't go OTT with mass slaughtering and killings.

It's Disney XD. There are never going to be HBO levels of blood and gore, but it's certainly not going to be saccharine happily ever after stuff either.

They could still imply dark things though, couldn't they? Like, subtely inform the audience that there was a mass killing on a planet.

I guess similiar to Zeb's planet and how his species was all but wiped out.

    Yeah, it implies genocide.

    "Implies"

Star Wars has actually depocted genocide on screen before. I think the destruction of Alderaan and Order 66 both count.

I'd describe Order 66 as ethnic cleansing.

I do like the idea of some Stormies bossing around poorer members of the city for fun, becuase when people are in a position of power, they tend to do things like that.

...that is literally the same thing.

    "Pick up that can!"

That stuff happens in IRL dictatorships all the time.

Thing is - the Jedi were from all kinds of species and planets. They couldn't really be called an ethnic grouping - more a religious or philosophical grouping.

Targeting a specific group is genocide, whether its an ethnic or religious or any kind of group.

Indeed. Calling it "ethnic cleansing" however, stretches things somewhat. "Religious warfare between the Jedi and the Sith" might apply however.

That said - given that the Force runs in families - there could be a universal "Force-Sensitivity Gene" with the Galactic Empire seeking to enrol or destroy everyone who has that gene, after Order 66. Which could then be said to be "genetic cleansing" rather than "ethnic cleansing".

They were however selected by blood, midiclorian count, which made them all related through that. No longer was just anybody able to tap into the force as some energyfield like in the OT left that open, as Kenobi exlained away "luck" as actually the Force. They were were an elitist, esoteric and secretive society and were able to procure children throughout the republic and take them away from their families who only got to spend so much time with the infant child before they were taken off to the Jedi temple and never be contacted again. The Jedi also viewed non Force sentient lifeforms or creatures or beings that looked different or acted different with a chauvinistic attitude and exploited them. A good example of this is Jinn and Kenobi in TPM. Jinn was not above lying, cheating and tipping events in his favor by using his special powers to get what he wanted. The only thing really holding a Jedi back is the Jedi himself, on how much or when to use his powers, the darkside and goodside are more manners of choices. They'd have to personally police themselves but that is not practical and they must be truly arrogant to think themselves above temptation or they believe their actions are justified cause they're basically above the law because they are the law. But non Force sensitives are routinely easy prey for Jedi mind tricks or using the Force to cheat at whatever, its an unfair advantage and one which the Jedi use quite frequently in their daily lives and during the Clone Wars. Even Luke was dangerous close to the darkside in ROTJ, force choking and trying to use mindtricks.

One of the ideas that went into Grievous' origins in TCW was that he was rejected by the Jedi order for lack of midiclorians /force sensitivity, so in revenge plotted to destroy them he had himself surgery rebuilt to rival Jedi reflexes and was lightsaber trained by Dooku as apparently lightsaber instructed and weapons are off limits to non-Jedi imitates.

    Dark places, huh?
I guess we're going back to Umbara - that place didn't seem to have daylight, did it?

Rise of the Old Masters spoiler!

Here's the darkest thing onscreen in Rebels we've gotten a look at thus far. Poor Luminara... compare this to the picture of her on hologram in Rebels and look at how different she looks. The color is gone from her skin, she has no nose, and you can see her facial bones jutting out, whereas in the hologram she had a full face.

That's clearly a dessicated / mummified corpse. Luminara Unduli is no more.

Dark Places... maybe they'll have an episode on a rogue planet. By default, that would be a pretty dark place 24/7. :D
