Hehe, had two windows open didn't you and posted in the wrong thread. :p

This has some more info from that Computer Games article.

    Evil avatar

    >>>Knights of the Old Republic will use an engine called Odyssey. Supposedly it takes advantage of the the latest graphical technology in the GeForce 3. The Odyssey engine is a step above the engine used for Neverwinter.

The gameplay will be more action packed than the Baldur's Gate series. They describe it as a "rules-based real-time system, with a strong action component".

There will be "minigames" included that are like those found in the Final Fantasy series. These will be in the form of interactive cut scenes.

Three classes is all that is described here, choice of gender will be in.

The game will feature a level up system with skills you get to put points in. You can pick what skills you wish to learn.

Your actions will determine if you drift towards the dark or light side of the force.

You must play as a human, but your party can (up to 3 at a time) anything from wookies to druids.

You will visit about 8 worlds in the game, some familiar like Tatooine.

Character animations feature eyebrow movement, moving eyes, rustling hair. Animations for emotions are included as well like fear or pain. Described as some of the most life like characters seen in an RPG like this to date.

You control a starship called the Ebon Hawk, and this is how you travel in the game. Ship has the same "character and focus as the Millennium Falcon in the movies".<<<<

I think they may have made a mistake when they said you can only play as a human as your main character.

And I think they may have made a mistake with "Druids".

This is Star Wars, not Dungeons & Dragons. I dare say the word ought to have been "Droids".

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- February 28, 2002 -- LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC today announced its upcoming role playing game (RPG), Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, will debut on the Xbox video game system this fall and release on PC early 2003. Developed by BioWare Corp., the dramatic game features an original story set some 4,000 years prior to the timeframe of the Star Wars films in an era dominated by an epic conflict between the Jedi and the evil Sith.

"Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic will be available on two dynamic platforms, Xbox and PC, both of which are perfectly suited for the incredibly compelling and high action role playing experience this game will offer," says Simon Jeffery, president of LucasArts. "As always, LucasArts' goal is to determine the best platform fit for each game. In this case, BioWare's tremendous expertise in the PC RPG genre makes that platform an ideal showcase for the game, while an Xbox version provides a great opportunity for LucasArts to establish the first major RPG franchise on that platform."

"BioWare has been fortunate to develop role playing games that have been well received over the years," says Ray Muzyka, BioWare's joint CEO and co-executive producer of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. "In Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, we'll be able to bring BioWare's strengths ? engaging story development, striking art and animation style, and rewarding character development ? to the Star Wars universe in a way that will deliver an amazing game play experience."

Added Greg Zeschuk, BioWare's other joint CEO and co-executive producer, "The Xbox and PC are both fantastic game machines, and the development team is committed to pushing the boundaries of both platforms to make Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic the best role playing game possible."

Notice in the screenies, the first 3 are x-box, 2nd 3 are PC. Weird. I'd have thought that the game would pretty much still be on the one base platform at this point in development.

Also loving the look of Kashyyyk!

EDIT: There's an x-box Kashyyyk screen, and a PC one from a slightly different angle. The architecture and texturing of the two are indistinguishable, leating me to conclude the "x-box" and "pc" logos on the screenies are rubbish.

Groovy. :D I guess that wookie is one of the NPC's along with that blue skined alien. Possibly a Twilek? Can't get a good look at it.

I see Gammorean fashion sense didn't change over 4000 years either.

You know, they may be right about Human only player characters - otherwise there could be language issues.

    Niiiccee.

I remember reading an article a while ago stating that at the time the main PC could choose 3 different races. Don't remember the exact story though. If there were any language issues, I think having a special item like a miniature protocol droid with you could easily solve a problem like that.

Whoops, while editing I had accidentally deleted part of my post.

Yeah, I probably was thinking of the party limit. I guess that if only one race was choosable, Bioware would be able to enhance the story a bit more, but having to choose only Human as a race seems limiting.

EDIT: Sorry, got you confused there? ;)

    Heh. I think we're sorted now ;)

Having a human as the main character is OK by me, considering the range of species / droids you can add to your party of three.

Yeah, one of the things I liked about the Baldur's Gate series: the wide variety of NPCs. Especially the party interactions in BG2. And with a wide enough skills list, the PC should be able to be different enough.

Yah, I mean, they are pretty darn good.

And just in case you're still nervous, they still have over 9 months to "improve" it more. :p

Yeah it could still use some work. Those screens aren't even close to this one.

    [image=http://www.theforce.net/multimedia/episodeiPics/Screen_Captures/Wdscrn081.jpg]

I mean come on it's 2002, why do those screens look like they belong on my Atari 2600? :p
