    mini reviews:

    i live in fear
old man [played by toshiro mifune] is obsessed with a fear of nukes wants to move his family to brasil. they protest and try to have him declaired incompitent.

moves very slow but has a strong ending. not everyone's cup of tea. and waaaay too anti-nuke preachy, but you can forgive the japanese, afterall they got bombed [twice]

    drunken angel
toshiro mifune plays a 1950's yakuza who be friends a doctor [i dont wanna give too much away]

great film, fantastic acting, and a wonderful death scene.

now i've seen seven samurai before, and i love it, but i won't be going to the magnolia to see it until prolly the last showing on thurs.

next week: hidden fortress, stray dog and throne of blood

Brian, I talked to stone and we will join you for that Thursday showing of Hidden Fortress.

By the way, we went to see Throne of Blood tonight... excellent version of the classic Macbeth story. And yet another awesome death scene, as stone pointed out from Drunken Angel. As I'm watching more and more Kurosawa I'm looking for the style and characteristics of his filmmaking... and I'm LOVING IT!! The passion he captures is just phenomenal. And included in that seems to be the death scenes in his films. The death alone is a work of art. It's ALMOST over-the-top, but it's just done so perfectly that it works well without making you think "this is just hokey". The way Mifune hangs off the balcony in Drunken Angel, or the look of betrayal on his face when he's faced with hundreds of arrows from his own clan. Just superb.

    /rant off
