I think we all saw it so I don't really need to post a picture.

People I know say it's for toy selling and for aesthetic reasons just cause "it looks cool". But the same is said about Darth Maul's lightsaber back in 1999.

So what do you all think?

Increases the close proximity offensive potential of the weapon threefold.

I don't mind it, Double Bladed lightsabers wouldn't translate well to real life either.

Doesn't really say why it's useful. I speculated that when the blades are locked at a certain angle, the wielder plays dirty and hits a button which makes the mini-blades grow and kill the other guy?

I think it could be more of a defensive lightsaber. Like, he lures his enemies in to lock sabers with him and counters them.

He'll use one of the smaller blades to impale and kill Han Solo.

It would be more effective in a duel, I hope the duels are slower due to this.

It's just a signature weapon. Like Maul's staff, or Dooku's curved hilt. It really has no purpose beyond being cool. There will be an exhaustive eight page wookiepedia article detailing every nuance for this saber later on anyway, so let's just appreciate it while it's fresh and awesome before our fellow fans make us hate it.

Maul's staff required a specific combat style which proved practical to his situation. The same was said about Dooku. He had a specific swordsman style which works with his curved hilt.

I would imagine that it's an ancient Sith weapon, probably stolen from the Jedi Temple or suchlike.

I suspect the wielder's combat style will be more serpentine and free-flowing than the strict pirouettes of a style designed by Nick Gillard. Think Bob Anderson training a steampunk ballerina. When I look at the "broadsaber" and try to imagine an effective, intramural combat style that makes sense in this universe I tend to envisage a more robust Vader-type style of swordplay. In that sense I think the crossguard might prove practical.

This "specific style of combat" was never shown in the films. Dooku and Maul used the same back flipping, spinning, whatever style that all of the Jedi characters were using in the PT. Anything else is just flavor text added by the old EU to try and give it the appearance of depth.

When someone tries to strike the wielder he can block with the cross guard section then counter with the main blade. Think about it.

Perhaps all of the rumors are correct and it is an ancient artifact being used by a collector of ancient Sith relics and it looks impractical and outdated because it is impractical and outdated.

That's what I was wondering A Chorus of Disapproval could be ancient. That's why it looks like its barely contained in that hilt. It's still volatile.

Yeah, it is just the right amount of "absurd" to seem just as unfeasible as looking at a Bronze Age Mesopotamian sword would to a modern fencer.

Nipuhanipera I disagree. It looks dangerous to even wield let alone attack someone else with it. And that would add to the character of a dark lord to wield a dangerous-looking weapon.

As I said in another thread, it reminds me of a saber blowtorch.

Oh, I agree completely with its potential to inflict damage. I merely mean that the design might seem "out of place" because, it is literally "out of place" in the era that the saga takes place in.
