Think of Final Fantasy and DragonSlayer"

    Maybe it is the "Flame-Sword".

There could also be an "Ice-Sword", "Silver-Sword" and Dragon Sword.

Keeping all lightsaber designs similar would be stagnant.

I like the Maul double blade and Excaliber saber.

    Fresh designs.

It gives me optimism that the film will be very good.

They are paying attention to little details in design, for example the radar dish in the falcon is now rectangular.

Those little details give me faith that they will pay even more attention to the BIG details.

LOL. ^:)^ As a long time Apple user, this is the best thing Ive's come up with lately along with that 2013 Mac Pro.

    http://www.hitfix.com/harpy/284-day...jedi-just-explained-the-crossguard-lightsaber

Some are speculating that the discussion of multiple crystals (well-established in legends, but this is the first time they're touching the concept in the new canon) in Heir to the Jedi is intended to foreshadow the bad guy's crossguard lightsaber in way, with perhaps the "unstable appearance" of the saber being due to misaligned crystals

It's a great design because it hearkens back to a medieval broadsword. Has an old feel to it. The lightsaber designs I hate are the more convoluted futuristic ones, like the Inquisitor's spinning blade and Ezra's lightsaber/ photon gun or whatever. I liked Rebels Season One, but that was a misstep, IMO. Part of the appeal of lightsabers is that they are, as Obi-Wan says in ANH, an elegant weapon for a more civilized age. Making them all gadgety destroys that feeling.

Er, in lightsabers, not SW in general. As I explained...

IMO, they should basically function as swords. Not spinning blades or guns...

the reason ezra made it into a gun is so the saber is hidden. so he can have it on him and it doesn't look like a saber. that seems fine to me. the spinning saber is similar to gg having four. the inquisitor isn't as good with it and needs more power to overwhelm. that saber was only in season 1 anyway.

There are all sorts of reasons for having a variety of different types of lightsabers. I just think that for aesthetic and thematic purposes, they shouldn't move outside the basic sword concept. And that's why I'm OK with Kylo Ren's, and not so OK with the Inquisitor's. Grievous...well...let's just say he's another bit of canon I pretend doesn't exist. :)

reason why i like the crossguard so much cause im a big fan of defensive stances and pesky combat styles, it is a longsword after all

I think the practical purpose for the new lightsaber is that it will make a cool Hasbro FX lightsaber.

After almost 4 months, still don´t like the new saber design. I like the idea of a broad blade. But the mini sabers in the hilt are just wishy-washy. I really can´t see the point. It´s actually the first time I´m not convinced by a new saber in the movies. I loved the Maul´s saber and like Dooku´s a lot too.

Agree with Inquisitor´s saber and Ezra´s looking stupid.

There has to be some sort of purpose and logic to Ren's sabre design. Other than, 'it looks cool', surely?. I'm sure we'll find out the reason for it in the film.

Maybe a particular two handed fighting style? Wouldn't that negate any chance of self injury with such a weapon?

thats how a longsword is used, and if you check the length in the trailer it shows just enough to tell you that it is longer than an ordinary one

Woah, I've never read that before. Is this confirmation that Kylo's saber is a very old one, from before even the PT era? If so, me like this. Me like this a lot.

ETA: Could this be the first spoiler slip to escape from the Mystery Box this year?

I doubt it, isn't that the guy who designed and made the OT sabres? I'm sure he must be retired now.

EDIT: No, he's still working at the age of 71.
