In the original trilogy, we constantly see the familiar red and green laser fire across the screen, coming from the fighter attack ships. We all know that the Rebellion, the good guys fire red lasers from their ships, while the Empire, the enemies fire the green. However, both good and evil fire red from their blasters.

In Episode I, the good guys fire green from both their ships and hand blasters as well as the enemies firing the red. In Episode II, we get to see blue and purple laser fire for the first time in a Star Wars film.

then you are describing -changes- in color, not necessarily reversals.

I noticed the color change between the trilogies, too. Although, as you noted in the OT, all handgun lasers are red, as are the Imperial walkers lasers.

Also, in the PT, the lasers resemble lightsabers in that they have a white core, while in the OT, the lasers are totally opaque.

Remember, the Empire is the Republic, so it makes sense that they keep using green lasers.

Also don't forget that the TIE's in the ESB asteroid chase switched to (or from, i forget which) a blue laser for part of the chase ::)

The TIEs always shoot green lasers in the asteroid chase.

Then why do the stormtroopers change from blue to red lasers? :)

In the original ESB, the TIEs in the asteroid shot blue lasers, but this was changed to green in the Special Edition.

[interrogative] perhaps when they switch from clonetroopers to stormtroopers [/interrogative]

I see them blue on my TV.

A good explanation could be that The Tie Figthers switched to Ion cannons due to the fact that Darth Vader wanted them alive. But sinse Tie's aren't equiped with Ion Cannons I guess that's out of the question.

Same thing happened in ANH, when Vader's saber color switched from red to blue (After he "killed" Obi-Wan)

Wow- I never noticed that they changed the blue TIE lasers to green in the SE- neato! That little technical gaffe always kinda bugged me ::)

Just to be technical... those aren't lasers, those are ion cannons. Notice that they don't sound like the regular TIE lasers and sound like the ion cannon that fired from Hoth :D

They had color problems with the asteroid and the lasers in the original editions, so they lasers ended up as blue at times.

They fixed the color problem with the SE.

I think that for the AE that they'll change the laser blasts so it all looks the same throughout.

Its to show that the Republic isn't the good guy like you'd think

I've said this before and I'll say it again

If you look at the end battle of Ep. 2, the republics army, the "good" guys, is moving from right to left and the droids, the "bad" guys, are moving from left to right on the screen

Whats the significance? Throughout movie history whenever two opposing armies meet in a battle the good guys' army always moves on the screen from left to right because its how our reading is done and its simply linear in our minds, and the bad guys move from right to left

So why're the republic's troops going the wrong way?

I don't know about that armies from the left are ALWAYS the "good guys". In Braveheart, the Scots came from the right.

Well with any rule there are exceptions.

But I'm sure AOTC was done like that on purpose, it's a very subtle but very important message

"Tie Figthers are not equiped with Ion cannons"

Says who? A book? If they sound and look (pre-SE) like ion cannons, then they're still lasers? It's like that saying: if it looks and talks like a duck, it is a duck.

Just because the beams are blue, doesn't mean they are ions- afterall, the Hoth ion cannon fired red shots ::)

    Well, close...

    Pictures on this page

I have no idea where Zahn (who started "the ion cannons are blue" fallacy, I've heard) got the idea that ion cannons are blue, and then dragging that into the EU...

Why do ducks have flat feet?
    To stomp out fires

Why do elephants have flat feet?

    To stomp out burning ducks

Stupid? yes, but funny in its own way
