[Disclaimer: Star Wars, the GFFA, and probably most of the intergalactic void, are all owned by George Lucas. This is just one fan?s personal critical and artistic response, an individual commentary on the characters, settings and situations of the Star Wars canon.

In this case, it?s a speculation about where the plot of the ?Legacy of the Force? series might go next; and as such, it contains spoilers for the novels up to and including Karen Traviss?s Sacrifice.

And remember: we?re all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the sea of stars.... :D]

A long time ago, in a Galaxy far, far away...

Luke Skywalker was the last to arrive.

The other members of the High Council were already in their seats ? eleven Force-strong sentients, clad in loose brown robes that dulled the differences of sex and age and species; sitting together in the quiet silence that was appropriate for a group Jedi Masters.

Luke felt a slight tension in his brows, and willed it away as he stepped through the door.

His eyes flickered around the room as he moved. The others all looked up at him.

Masters making their way to their places were supposed to circle around the perimiter of the chamber, behind the seats. He?d instituted that rule himself.

Instead, he walked straight across the middle of the room between them, his footsteps tapping out a military rhythm on the marble floor.

That raised a few eyebrows. Luke just hid his smile.

When he reached the Grand Master?s chair, he didn?t sit down. He turned, and leaned casually on the back of the seat.

?Before the meeting begins, I have an announcement to make.?

?Sure, Luke?? That was Corran, looking up at him with quiet sympathy. Luke grinned, and unclipped the lightsaber from his belt.

He weighed the weapon in his hand. The weapon he?d built himself, in Ben Kenobi?s hut on Tatooine ? at the start of the mission to rescue Han from Jabba.

That was when I began to go wrong, he thought.

The rest of the Council was looking at him. So he smiled, and relaxed. For once, he didn?t try to project false confidence in the Force; he didn?t try to hide the darkness buried deep inside him.

Strangely, he still felt as though he was made of light.

    ?Luke?? Kenth Hamner asked.

Luke nodded at him. At all of them.

?I?m leaving the Order. As of now, I?m making my resignation as Grand Master, and surrendering my lightsaber.?

He handed the blade to a dumbfounded Kyp Durron, then slipped out of his dark cloak. He folded it across the back of the Grand Master?s chair. and walked straight back out.

Behind him, he heard the dignified silence of the Jedi Counil collapse in uproar.

    He just grinned.

?Luke,? Corran called out, hurrying out of the Council after him. ?Where are you going??

Luke paused, and glanced out the corridor window ? past the horizon, towards the infinite sky.

?I?m going to Confederation space,? he said, with a funny smile. ?See if they have an opening for an old fighter pilot.? He shrugged. ?Are you going to try to stop me??

Corran took a step back. ?No, of course not.?

?Good,? Luke said. ?I didn?t think so.?

He nodded his old friend farewell.

I never really liked him anyway, he realised. He nearly laughed.

    Then he just walked away.

significant crack in the great wall of the powerful Galactic Alliance.

From the little I know of the EU, I've no doubt he would do exactly that.

    Nicely done!!

You never do fail to do the unexpected, McEwok. 'Tis why I like you. :D Nifty scenario, though I do like that line about Corran best. :D

Wow, that was out of left field. So Luke'll be joining Han and Leia, eh? Just like old times, it seems. :D

Hm, very interesting. It's odd to think of Luke as being anything other than a Jedi, but then the line ?I?m leaving the Order. As of now, I?m making my resignation as Grand Master, and surrendering my lightsaber.? doesn't necessarily mean he's no longer a Jedi, just that he's not a part of the Order, which is another thing entirely. [face_thinking]

Ha, Jacen's reaction would be worth seeing. I'm betting he wouldn't see this coming. [face_mischief]

    Fascinating idea. Great work. :D

Wow! I love this, I honestly do. I hope Luke does join the Confederation with some other Jedi in Inferno.

:D Thanks. A little humour in the Luke/Corran interaction seemed an appropriate way to show that all was right with the Galaxy again... [face_mischief] :D

More to the point, he's going against the rules that he established himself...

    See above? [face_mischief]

    o_O o_O o_O

    ... :p

    Aren't they both? [face_mischief]

You liked that line too? o_O

 Glad you liked it!! :D [face_dancing]

[face_blush] Thanks for the support!! :D

And, I mean - you know Luke Skywalker, surely?! ;)

    [:D] Thanks... [face_blush] [face_peace]

I'll leave it to the readers' imaginations, for the time being anyway... :D [face_thinking]

    "Together again, huh?" [face_mischief]

    Define "Jedi"...? ;)

    No, he probably wouldn't... [face_whistling]

    [face_blush] Thanks!! :)

Glad you like it - and, yes, I'd like to see something like this, too...

We might se the opposite, though - Luke strengthening his alliance with Jacen... [face_worried]

you make me hope that it will turn out this way. [face_thinking] it would kind of--well, suck--if he were to take stock and realize that he'd been in the "wrong" for most of his life. what a horribly sad thought for someone trying to do good.

extremely clever. if you decide to add onto this, please PM me.

    He resigned, huh? Very intriguing.

I love the way he just walked in and made the announcement with no build-up or fanfare.

    Great job on this
