Yeah, some sort of "person of authority" would make sense.

My first thought was that she'll probably be either someone high up in the New Republic or the First Order.

I'm not sure how Rey being Luke's kid depends upon Laura Dern being her mother.

If indeed Rey IS Luke's daughter then the most logical conclusion would be that her mother is dead.

Who is very dead a VERY long time ago.

I suppose we could resurrect the Obi-Wan's Daughter stuff to pass the time between now and finding out she's just a new character unrelated to any previous characters

If Laura Dern is Rey's mother (with Luke being Rey's father) that's going to annoy me to no end. I love Laura Dern but she is 15 years younger than Mark Hamill. Was Harrison Ford being 14 years older than Carrie Fisher (and Han being 11 years older than Leia) not enough?

There's no reason they could have gotten a 59 year old actress who would only be about 5 years younger.

And that wouldn't make her too old to be Rey's mother either. Rey is 19 so she would have been 40 when Rey was born, the age my mother was when she had my brother.

Mark is older than Luke is in-universe. Luke is meant to be in his mid-50's by this point if I'm not mistaken.

Fruit vendor. Of course she can still be someone important's mom (Snoke's or Maz's maybe) but definitely a fruit vendor.

It's still annoying me. Why do our leading actors both need to have their characters' spouses played by actresses 14+ years younger than them? It was understandable in Han and Leia's case. If Laura Dern's character is meant to be Luke's wife, though, it's really not. An older actress is just as capable as playing a younger character, the way Mark Hamill is for Luke.

My first reaction was, "Ok, cool, she's Luke's SO and Rey's mom."

But I'm going to out on a limb say she's Obi-Wan's daughter who was raised on Mandalore by her mother, Bo Katan.

I'm guessing she's playing Kitster's widow, but I could be wrong.

Nah more like grandchild if they went down this route. Ben dies an old man in the OT, Rey would be too young for them to be her family.

    I think she's general Hux's mother. :p

    Either that or Phasma's mother.

So Ben dies an old man in the desert? We all know that's not the only thing he did with his life.

And I never said she'd be related to Rey, I just said my first reaction was a good one. I have a nasty, sneaking suspicion we'll either never find out who Rey's mother is, or we won't find out until Episode IX.

Ohh, Phasma's mom, now there's a nastily evil idea.

Why not both? Hux and Phasma Palpatine. Oh wait, Hux's actual name is General Hux. So how about Hux and Phasma's daughter sent back from the future where Luke fell to the dark side?

Glad to hear this news! I love Laura Dern. Loved her since Jurassic Park, and she's had some great performances ever since.

I could get into the idea of her being Luke's wife...[face_thinking]

But not so much the Obi-Wan's daughter idea...o_O

But quite honestly, I'd be fine with whomever she plays. Not everyone has to be a wife/father/mother/brother/son etc. of someone, after all...

Yes, but again that just proves he was WAY underutilized. If they utilize Dern and Del Toro correctly, they won't be wasted like Von Sydow was. Or at the very least, they would be glofied cameos in VIII leading to greatly expanded and important roles in IX. You don't give him/her a cameo only to kill them off in said cameo.
