Welcome to Legio Angelus: Far From Heaven, an RPG set during the war between Heaven and Hell.

    [image=http://www.goodbrush.com/cpg146/albums/commercial_projects/miscprojects/archangel.jpg]

?Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of Death, I will fear no evil ?
? for I am the meanest servant of God who ever marched into the valley.
    ?
    --Archangel Michael, c. 16th century.

    SETTING
It is the present day. A secret war rages all around us. It is a war that has been fought since the beginning of time. It is the war between the angels of God and the demons of Lucifer. A war for the souls of humanity. A war that must be won, else all creation falls into darkness?

As an angel, or as a human brought into the secret conflict between darkness and light, you are on the frontline of the war between Heaven and Hell. You will battle demons, devils, and supernatural powers; save the souls of men; travel across time to keep the enemy from sabotaging the past; and perhaps see Judgment Day arrive ?

    CHARACTERS
Legio Angelus has, as indicated, two types of character for players to enjoy: angels and humans.

    Enlightened Humans:
As an ?enlightened? human you commence the game with knowledge of the existence of angels and demons in mortal form and the fact of the continuing war for humanity?s souls. The human may or may not be pleased about having such knowledge.

Nonetheless, as a human you are able to obtain the favour of an angel (or even an archangel) and, on declaring your allegiance in the secret war, receive the ability to perform a particular supernatural act. As a human you are also not bound by the same rules that an angel is ? although acting in an evil fashion may well result in you losing the favour of the archangel in question. And you, too, will join the war against the darkness with your angel.

All humans start the game without the favour of any particular angel, though that may be granted shortly thereafter.

    Angels:
You start the game as a low-ranking angel, aligned to of one of the Archangels and looking into your archangel?s prime concerns. Your archangel?s prime concerns will be revealed to you after selection; you are, first and foremost, a creature of Divine Will. As you complete missions and comply with your archangel?s concerns, your rank and power as an angel will rise.

Angels are beings of staggering power who must tread lightly upon the Earth. It is unlikely that the physical world could withstand a full-scale battle between the unleashed armies of Heaven and Hell ? such a battle would most likely trigger Armageddon early, which would not keep with the Divine Will and would amount to a default victory for Hell.

As such angels are obliged to obey certain principles laid down by the Council of Archangels:

    I. Angels may not kill a human under any circumstances.
II. Angels may not read a human?s mind. They can, however, read a human?s heart.
III. Angels may not willfully reveal the existence of the secret war to mortals unless it is in dire necessity. The conflict between Heaven and Hell in the physical world is, of necessity, in a kind of cold war.
IV. Angels have special abilities usable in mortal form. However, use of these abilities sets off ripples in the spiritual ether and may draw the attention of other celestials ? if not highly attuned humans such as cardinals or witches.
    V. Similarly, prolonged physical battle between angels and demons will set off similar ripples and will attract other celestials to the battleground.
VI. Angels may well know the demons they face personally, if only because such demons are in fact fallen from grace and were once angels themselves. Angels are cautioned to ignore the allegiances they may have had before that demon fell.

The most interesting RP I've seen in a while. Expect a character sheet sometime within the next few days...

One question, though: is there much of a difference between the Archangels?

Archangels are of equal power and influence, but their personalities, appearance, concerns and aims are quite different. For example, an archangel concerned with upholding divine justice might well have different goals to an archangel who is concerned about bringing light back to sinners in darkness. You may divine (pun intended) something of the archangels' different goals from a little internet research, but Man has never seen the full picture of the angelic host... :D

Also, the lack of entries on which archangels are which is both to keep up some mystery, and to save some space. You may well have to deal with an archangel that isn't necessarily on foot with your angel's personality -- but that may be what submitting to Divine Will is all about! :D

His celestial form has also caused many mini tornadoes deep in the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean.

Althing used his Celestial form, with the help of Azrael, to blow a fifth jet off course that was to be used on 9/11. He also blew off the clouds on the Himalayas to save a group of climber?s from a frozen death.

    GM Approved :)

    Name: Caliban
    Gender: male
Age: You?ve technically been around since the dawn of time, so this is unnecessary. Oh, and you?re immortal as well!
Personality: was very hardline but is now wearied by the war, believes there is only right or wrong, deep sense of honour but with a very dry sense of humour, looks at humans as troublesome children who need guidance, can be ruthless and singleminded, but once given charge of a person or mission will protect them/ see it through to the end no matter what.
Appearance in Celestial Form: tall long brown haired man with large white wings in golden armour and a sword of white fire, surrounded by nearly blinding light (he is fond of the classical images)
Appearance in Mortal Form: a young man looking around 16 in green camoflage pants, black skate shoes, Pantera t shirt, buzz cut hair.
    Chosen Archangel: Michael
Special Abilities: flight, super strength, ability to heal others.
Bio: Caliban has followed Michael into every battle the Archangel has fought, he was among the first to reject Lucifer and those who oppose the divine will. He personally banished/slew many of his oldest friends and companions when it was clear they had turned and cheered as the fallen were cast down, and though he knows it was right the memories of those bloody remorseless battles still haunt him to this day.

Caliban takes the most interest in human conflicts and mans ability to show his true nobility and evil in times of horror. There have been countless times when a warrior, soldier or ordinary person has found themselves in extreme danger and simply tried to do what was right even at the loss of their own lives, and have found Caliban has stepped in to shelter and protect them (a guardian Angel as it were), and if need be guide them to heaven and their rewards. He is a patron of all those who have seen evil and have refused to stand by, and has involved himself in every major conflict in human history. As such he is cold to human suffering only really interested in their reaction to it.

    Human:
    Name: Mike Suthers
    Gender: Male
    Age: 32
Appearance: Skinny, a little pale, messy thin black hair, smokes....a lot
Special Ability: Often accused of having an almost Bestial nature, the Angelic forces offered Mike the ability to 'summon the beast from within his heart', calling forth a wolf akin in strength and consequence to an Angel's Celestial form.
Bio: As many characters in these sorts of tales, Mike Suthers' story begins in a little suburb of London. Growing up on a little farm with plenty of wilderness to explore, his mum was the first to refer to the boy as a beast. When not imprisoned in school or doing his chores, he was exploring his wilderness, often not coming home 'til well after supper, muddied and half naked.
The wild-boy calmed down as he grew older and came to live and work in the city, and soon seemed to completely subside except when Mike was drunk or in a bloody crappy mood.
It must've happened while he had a few too many cocktails, staggering home from a dank. Saw a little fortune booth, your future for a half a pound. Craziest fortune ever, and a few more drinks woulda erased it, but there it was, clear as day
The War is Cold. Heat it up. Unleash the Beast.
    Lucky Numbers: 42, 3, 7, 40, 16
Heck, he probably would've forgotten anyways, but someone up there had to make sure, and subtlety wasn't really Heaven's forte that night. Figured he knew what was up, and just made it a little more clear and signed the poor sot up right there. The divine Clean-up crew told him'd probably been a demon in that machine, trying to tempt him, and that he did the right thing to walk away wondering...

    Name: Borachio (Bo-Rah-Chee-Oh)
    Gender: Male
Age: Appears to be in his late 20's in his Angelic form
    Personality: Silent, thinker, forgiving
Appearance in Celestial Form: Winged man (dark wings), glowing with holy power, long dark hair, inspiring features and build. Someone to follow or look to for support.
Appearance in Mortal Form: Old man in a long dark jacket, with a cane. Weathered features, but very bright eyes
    Chosen Archangel: Azrael
Special Abilities: Borachio can slow time to deliver the last rites to the dying, can attack demons with heavenly power when the need arises, and can take saved souls to heaven.
Bio: Borachio has served faithfully for all of eternity, beginning first as a lieutenant in Micheal's army, then eventually serving under the Angel of Death, Azrael. His duty has brought him into contact with Abaddon, whom he fought to a standstill, though it took every ounce of will in his body to do so.

Borachio is regarded by others as a saver of souls, and an excellent warrior for the Heavens. He currently works at saving as many souls as possible, which brings him into contact with demons on a regular basis.

On further consideration, I've decided to publish details of the archangels and their prime concerns. If anyone does want to change their affiliation, please let me know.

    The Archangels:

    Michael: - Archangel of Battle
Michael in celestial form appears as a powerfully-built man stripped to the waist, with black hip-length hair, a massive silver battleaxe in his right hand rather than the sword he is often depicted with. His more notable achievements include kicking Satan?s red butt personally out of Heaven. His prime concerns are the continuation of conflict between angels and demons ? the war, in a manner of speaking. Sometimes this leads him to place as a second priority the humans who are the subject of the struggle in favour of making sure demons do not get a foothold on the earth. He would sacrifice a human for the sake of destroying a demon.

    Gabriel: - Archangel of Knowledge
Gabriel in celestial form takes the form of the classic winged angel in white robe, but prefers a female?s form with red hair and electric blue eyes. Her notable accomplishments included speaking to just about every prophet born to guide humanity (doubling as the Metatron ? the Voice of God ? on her days off). Her prime concerns are bringing humanity to a continually stronger state of knowledge about the universe and about God, even if such things may cause fundamental problems with faith. In that respect the religion is not nearly as important as the ?heretics? amongst it to her, and she comes into conflict with Danyael from time to time because of it.

    Raphael: - Archangel of Creation
Raphael in celestial form takes the form of a young man within a golden fire. His duties have sadly included the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden, and standing guard at its gates. He does not just have a flaming sword ? he is the flaming sword of God, the expression of creation itself. His prime concerns are the preservation of the natural order, creativity, spontaneity, and general joy in the world. He tends to annoy some of the more staid archangels.

    Uriel: - Archangel of Salvation
Uriel in celestial form takes the form of a young woman in a hood so deep only her blue eyes can be seen gleaming from within. Amongst her achievements have been to hear the confessions of the seven demons who genuinely repented and were accepted back into the celestial fold. Her prime concerns are the rescue of all souls trapped in darkness back to light. This frequently brings her into conflict with Nephriel, and sometimes with Azrael to try and achieve repentance before death.

    Danyael: - Archangel of Destiny
Danyal in celestial form is a wheel of fire from which his eyes stare forth unblinking. Unlike the other archangels he has had no particular accomplishments ? other than private and secret audiences with God. Danyael is believed to know the future and his prime concerns are ensuring that, as far as possible, humans achieve their individual destinies ? their maximum potential for good in this life, whether large or small. As such he is allied with the other angels and has none as his particular opponents ? though his inscrutability and lack of comment in all but the most extreme situations is annoying to all and sundry.

Nephriel: - Archangel of Divine Justice
Nephriel in celestial form is a winged man with black-on-black eyes, a scale in one hand, a gleaming sword in the other. His accomplishments included weighing up the guilt of the Egyptians and recommending the punishment of the ten plagues against them. Nephriel?s prime concerns are ensuring that human beings answer for the moral wrongs they have done, whether it be in their mortal life or in eternity. He also is determined to root out heresy among the angelic ranks. Naturally Nephriel is not a popular archangel.

    Azrael: - Archangel of Death
Azrael, unique among the archangels, has black wings in his celestial form ? a trait that many of his angels also take when they are brought into Azrael?s ranks. Aside from t

    Name: Malik
    Gender: Male
    Age: N/A
Personality: Quiet, withdrawn perfectionist who is obsessive over his duty
Appearance in Celestial Form: A song of Eden
Appearance in Mortal Form: A handsome man of Arab origin
    Chosen Archangel: Danyael
Special Abilities: Invisibility (to mortals only), supernatural speed, can create illusions/visions
Bio: Malik is an angel in the service of Destiny. He remembers what existence was like before the Fall, and wants that time back. He is weary of the pointless rebellions of both humanity and his own kind. As far as he is concerned, any effort to struggle against the will of the Creator is futile. All that matters to him now is the fulfillment of The Plan.

He spends a lot of time in mortal form trying to understand mankind, and likes pretending to be either a sculptor or a puppeteer.

    Name: Dr. Jason Carver
    Gender: Male
    Age: 33
Appearance: Jason is tall, and handsome by mortal standards. He has brown hair, blue eyes, and keeps himself in pretty decent shape. He wears a golden cross on a chain, a gift from his mother, around his neck.
Special Ability: Jason literally has the hands of a healer. When he lays his hands over a person's wound, he can heal it instantly and painlessly. In turn, he is able to take the wounds he heals and inflict them upon a celestial being.
Bio: Jason was born into a Catholic family from New York City. When he was nine years old, however, he and his family were involved in a major car accident that killed both his parents. Following the accident, Jason was taken in by his uncle Joe, a Vietnam War vet who'd lost his legs after accidentally stepping on a mine.

Influenced by the senseless death of his family and by his uncle's stories about Vietnam, Jason gradually lost his faith in God. He decided to be a doctor, so that he could help people like his uncle and his parents. He was an intern at a hospital in New York when his uncle was killed during a mugging. Devastated after losing his only surviving relative, Jason relocated to London to get a fresh start.

While Jason's faith remained shaken, he often found himself confiding in Father Patrick Reilly, the hospital chaplain. It was during a visit with Father Reilly that Jason realized everything he'd believed was wrong. He was struck by a vision of a war, a war far more significant and devastating than anything mankind could conceive, being waged by the angels of Heaven on one side and the demons of Hell on the other.

Jason was noticeably shaken. He didn't believe it at first; it had been a stressful week, he hadn't had much sleep, he was probably just hallucinating because of exhaustion. But then he began to see things, strange things that couldn't happen in a rational universe. He still isn't sure if what he's seeing is real, but for a man who'd been certain that there was no God, no angels, and no Heaven, he's seen quite a lot of evidence to the contrary...

    Name: Father Joseph Cassus
    Gender: Male
    Age: 60
Appearance: long, black priest's robes with a silver crucifix about the neck, and the typical white collar. Steel grey hair that is short and swept back, and piercing blue eyes that hold the life and intensity of a far younger man.
Special ability: Can banish demons back to Hell for a time using the power of faith.
Bio: Father Cassus is the epitomy of the old Catholic faith; he is one of the few remaining priests who still believes in and studies the demons. He has, over the years, become a prominent Demonologist in the Jesuits. Between his studies and the various exorcisms which he has participated in over the years, Father Cassus has garnered a fairly copious amount of the hidden war between Heaven and Hell.

    [obi-wan]Well, Arfour, I think we've waited long enough...[/obi-wan]

May I say a big thanks to everyone who's posted up and is ready to participate! It's gratifying to get such a good response to this. So: we'll get started with the opening posts within the next 24 hours or so. I don't plan to do GM posts in any pretty colours unless people feel that it will assist, but right at the start let me repeat: I am completely open to any questions, ideas, or thoughts people want to throw my way, so don't be afraid to use the PM button! :)

Just before we start, here's the player list off the PMs and CSes I received. I anticipate the arrival of one other player, so this might need some adjustment, but this is basically it:

    Player Listing

    Angels:
Morkai: Caliban ? under Archangel Michael
Blubeast1237: Kane ? under Archangel Gabriel
Winged_Jedi: Malik ? under Archangel Danyael
Penguinator176: Borachio ? under Archangel Azrael
NickLitYouAFlame: Althing ? under Archangel Azrael

    Humans:
SephyCloneNo15: Mike Suthers (no angel assigned as yet)
Tiborax: Father Joseph Cassus (no angel assigned as yet)
Randy1012: Jason Carver (no angel assigned as yet)

One last note to the humans: you guys probably already know this, but you don't have access to your special ability until an angel 'taps' you for his archangel's service. I don't anticipate this will take terribly long to happen, though ;)

And here we go! Please don?t get worried about the ?titles? of the threads ? they?re more for amusement than ironclad plotlines that must be followed. And don?t think that you?re going to be stuck in the threads you?re in; the story?s going to change and the ?parties? will also have the opportunity to change as well?

And for those who?ve missed the ?start?: I can easily fit others into the story, so don?t be discouraged from sending your character sheets to me! :)

NickLitYouAFlame has also advised that he's changing his Archangel affiliation to Michael, which is fine by me.

Lastly, a short clarification note for those who were wondering: in mortal form angels are essentially bound to the laws of physics ? apart from the three special abilities you nominated. In celestial form the story is a bit different; you are barely bound by the laws of physics, and can move at great speed, turn on the proverbial dime, have great strength and so forth ? but the use of your abilities in human form, and indeed substantial use of the celestial form, sets off ripples in the ether and starts attracting a lot of attention ? not much of it good. I recognize the potential for godmoding abuse here and ask that everyone be responsible with the powers you have.

Heaven and Elizabeth II Hospital, London, England

The Bridge was made of golden light. At least, that might have been how a human would describe it. But no human had ever been at this end of the Bridge; their souls took other routes to reach paradise. Once, long ago, a shepherd named Jacob had glimpsed the Bridge in action from the other end, angels moving to and from a conduit between heaven and earth, and the sight had been enough for him to build a shrine there and name it, somewhat egotistically, as Jacob?s Ladder.

Malik studied the Bridge for a moment longer, then turned back in the direction of the sensation he felt. There was no mistaking it; he had felt it for the equivalent of millennia. And Malik could see that the other two angels standing here ? Kane drifting as a hazy cloud and Borachio standing grim, black wings folded ? could sense it too. The angels bowed as a wheel of fire materialized before them ? the unique form of the Archangel Danyael.
?My greetings,? a voice whispered from within the fire, and the angels saw two piercing blue eyes blink from the centre of the wheel. ?And to you, Kane, my brother Gabriel also sends his greetings. His words are mine today. Borachio, your archangel has spoken with you already, so his word is known. It is my task to Instruct you all for your mission to Earth.?

The angels listened; for two of them at least the purpose of their recent summons to Jacob?s Ladder was unclear. Danyael spoke on. ?You are dispatched to the city of London, in England. A certain Doctor Basil Eltiades is working in Elizabeth II Hospital there. He is a research doctor who has worked conscientiously for fifty years in his profession, and is respected in his medical community. The respect is such that he is due to attend the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony later this night. It is rumoured that he is to be awarded the prize for medicine.?

The Archangel?s ancient eyes blinked once, and gazed towards Malik. ?Our role is to ensure that Doctor Eltiades does in fact receive the prize, my angel. This night will be fulfillment of the doctor?s destiny ? the award being given to him will inspire over a hundred young medical researchers around the world to keep working. Untold suffering will be prevented because of what happens to the doctor.?

The Archangel?s gaze shifted across to Kane. ?But this is not all the doctor is doi

Althing glanced at Caliban. The screaming was dying down. The woman at the other end of the soundwaves was about taken into the dark grasp of death. She couldn't be saved now. But there were more in danger. As far as Althing could tell, another human, possibly more if the attackers escaped. Althing rushed around the corner and surveyed the scene. He saw two figures and in between himself and the two, were a dying human and one that was scared to death. The one scared to death had seen the demons, yet he was slightly out of it. The man was under the hold of alcohol.

Althing looked at the two demons and with a blink of his discolored eyes the two creatures were knocked back into the wall leaving a crater in there place when they slipped to the ground.

"Caliban, you need to comfort the dying human on her way to Heaven. I will deal with the attackers."

"I nomini patri, et figli, et spiritu --"

A near-unearthly scream shattered Father Cassus' concentration like a sledgehammer on glass. He could tell by the proximity of the screaming that it was quite close; close enough for him to do something if he could get there in time.

When the screams were abruptly ended, his heart skipped a beat. If he did not hurry, he would not be able to deliver the Last Rites in time, and the poor woman's soul would be comdemned to wander for eternity. Quick as a flash, he grabbed his oil and holy water from beneath the altar, along with a small vial of wine. He may have to deliver the Eucharist, and the blood of Christ would suffice in such dire straits. Before leaving, he also grabbed a lit torch off of the wall. St. John's was one of the few Catholic churches left that still used torches to light the walls at mass. Father Cassus alllowed himself a slight smirk; the church, like he himself, was outdated; a relic. He shook himself out of this momentary distraction and, holding the torch high over his head, pushed open the doors to his church.

The sight that met him was, at first, rather confusing. he saw two men in black coats slumped against a nearby wall, dazed, but not unconscious. He could not make out facial features in the dark. He also saw several men surrounding a fallen woman, who, it seemed, was bleeding from a large neck wound. He did not have much time, then.

He rushed over to the woman, dropping his torch beside her. He dropped to one knee and pulled out the oil. He placed a few drops on his fingers and made the sign of the cross on the woman's head.

"Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit."

He then anointed the hands in the same pattern.

"May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up."

Her breathing was slowing. The men in black coats were rising, eyeing the woman hungrily. It was then that Father Cassus thought he saw blood on one of their mouths, shining in the moonlight. He quickly crosses himself and, with his last rites concluded, grabbed the flaming torch in his right hand and his crucifix in his left, turning to face the men in black as he did so. He held his torch high and presented his crucifix before him with conviction, his voice full of divine anger.

"You shall not have her body or her soul! Begone, apostates of Hell!"

Althing had been standing back watching the beasts on the ground when a priest ran out into the alley. This was a man of god and one of those who lived his life as it should be. In the name of the true Father. Althing readied himself as the cloaked figures stirred and as the priest went to work. When the two finally stood the man turned on them.

"You shall not have her body or her soul! Begone, apostates of Hell!"

Althing respected the man for trying to help the woman but now he was in danger.

"Father, concentrate on delivering the Last Rites. It is entirely possible that these creatures are not of Hell or anything like it."

Althing brought his hands out slightly and created a barrier to contain whatever the beings were.

OOC: The last rites are done. It's a pretty short ritual, really. :p

GM OOC: Just a mini-update to keep things visualised. Normally I'll be updating on a less frequent basis so people have the chance to catch up...

The alleyway howled with a sudden cyclonic gale of wind as Althing blinked at the two black-coated men, and they were hurled backwards thirty feet into the nearest wall. The wallwork cracked, brick dust eddying in the wind. Whatever the damage they'd suffered, though, it didn't seem to stop them'; they began to clamber to their feet again, their snarls of fury echoing into the close confines of the alleyway. They charged forward, closing ground over the precious few seconds as Father Cassus whispered an abridged version of the Last Rites and Althing warned him against intervening further.

In the heat of the moment, neither seemed to notice that the girl's wounds seemed to be in the nature of heavy puncture wounds rather than a tearing of her neck.

Then priest brandished his crucifix, which produced a curious effect: the two black-coats hissed and snarled, and covered their faces as if a bright light had been flashed into it. Althing's wind wall hit them a second later, and for a couple of moments the black-coats's faces were grimaces of sharpened teeth as their coats flapped and fluttered in the sourceless breeze. The angel spotted flickers of red in their eyes and pasty white faces.

One raised its head and shrieked something wordlessly, then flipped up and away from the confrontation, landing with a crunch of shattering stonework atop a particularly ugly gargoyle on the wall of Saint John's, about forty feet up. It screeched again, a high-pitched keen that seemed to echo down through the stones themselves.

    The rats answered.

They seemed to materialise out of the shadows, but there was nothing insubstantial about them. A horde of the creatures, swarming in from the shadows, from all directions, swarming in on Althing, Caliban, Father Cassus, and Mike Suthers.

The other black-coat clutched at himself as though he'd suffered some kind of stomach cramp and crouched towards the ground, into the wind barrier. He seemed to go insubstantial, as if he were fading out, but his form remained and he began to sink into the ground...
And float forward, towards Althing's position.
