Leonardo Di Caprio would've made a better Anakin

I totally agree with this statement! And another thing, I think that after seeing Crossroads, Britney Spears would have done a much better job as Padme than Natalie Portman ever could!!!

lol j/k, Natalie and Hayden are awesome actors! :)

If Leonardo could be Anakin, then Chris Rock would be Obi-Wan, and Madonna could be Padme. [face_mischief]

Leo DiCaprio wouldn't be a good Anakin.
He has the "De Niro" complex.
It doesn't matter what role he is in...
He will always be just Leo DiCaprio in the flim...
    Not the character.

no he wouldnt have. just like ryan phillipe would NOT have made a better anakin and freddie prinze jr. would NOT have made a better spider-man

britney spears as padme???? GET REAL! i think if that were the case, SW would only earn about $2 at the box office

Did someone just use De Niro and Di Caprio in the same sentence.

OMG De Niro is brilliant with an awesome body of work. He doesn't play the same character in every movie and has often played against type.

Leo is too short and would have made a shocking Anakin.

The idea of Leo playing Anakin literally makes my testicles start to crawl back up into my pelvic bone.

I think they are frightened by the very thought of it.

scruffy-lookin I agree with you. De Niro is an excellent actor. I know that he plays all different types of roles.

But they just call the "Actor not being able to get away from his for her self" the "De Niro" Complex.

I don't know why they do but they just do.

--ROTJ novelization, the dying Anakin remembering his youthful self.

    Which fits best?

Don't get me wrong, Di Caprio is a good actor and among the known actors, would be on the short list, especially if AOTC had been filmed before Titanic, before Di Caprio became a household name.

I just don't think that anyone else could have done the Confession scene like Hayden. Hayden owns the character of Anakin now. Plus, Hayden and Natalie together do look more plausibly like the parents of Luke and Leia as played by the OT actors.

    Next thing we'll hear is that Di Caprio would have made a better Obi-Wan Kenobi than McGregor. 8-}

After GANGS OF NEW YORK comes out,
it will be interesting to see
    how Leonardo's career is affected.
I think TITANTIC nearly ruined him.

Well, I also agree that Leonardo DiCaprio wouldn't have been a good Anakin. However, I still wasn't impressed with Hayden's portrayal of the future Darth Vader. Come on people!!! This is Darth ******* Vader we're talkin about!!! The guy who could choke people just by thinking about it. The guy who hunted down and slaughtered The Jedi Order as we know it. I can't believe that Vader was as whiney as Hayden portrayed him in AOTC. He made Luke's tantrums in ANH tolerable. Also, Hayden's too much of a pretty boy in my opinion. DiCaprio would have been too. Now, this is just my opinion so to those of you who did like Hayden's portrayal that's fine. I'm not trying to start a war here. If I had been casting this movie though, Heath Ledger (A Knight's Tale, The Patriot, The Four Feathers) would have been the perfect choice for Anakin Skywalker.

    <img src=www.boxoff.com/issues/ may01/ledger.html>

His acting skills are hands down more convincing than Hayden's. He would have made Anakin much more 3 dimensional. My problem with Hayden was that he just didn't convince me that Anakin was in fact the most powerful jedi in the universe. I mean, he seemed to me like he was tripping over his lines way to much and didn't come across as the headstrong, arrogant character that we've been told from the beginning that Anakin was. Watch A Knight's Tale and see if you don't think it would have atleast been interesting to see what Heath could have done with the role of Anakin. Now, no matter how displeased I was with Hayden's performance, I know it wasn't all his fault. Lucas should have developed the character better. He should have had Anakin stand up to Obi Wan more, not just punk out and go over in the corner like he did most of the time when Obi Wan was telling him like it was. I just can't bear to see the future Vader acting like that. He should have had him question the Jedi Order's actions more as well. Kind of like Luke did on Dagobah with Yoda. I'd have loved to have seen him get into a squable with Yoda on Coruscant because Yoda felt his feelings for Padme were getting in the way of his assignment. Anyways, just wanted to throw my two cents in. Also, if you're still not convinced about Heath Ledger, watch A Knight's Tale or The Patriot and see what you think after that. Even if it doesn't change your mind, the flicks are still a great watch.

Good points, DP, you defended your choice well. But Heath would've been too old, and he doesn't look like Jake Lloyd much.

Some comments, though. I think Anakin didn't come across as the most powerful Jedi of all time because his talents were not really honed, probably because Obi-Wan was holding back on unleashing them. I see Anakin as emotionally sensitive, someone trying to get used to his power and the restrictions of being a Jedi. He's young, and does not know how to handle his powers yet. I think we will see more of his powerful side in Ep3. Just IMHO. :D

DANTIUS_PALPATINE2 , I thought Anakin was pretty arrogant in AOTC (remember Padme's apartment when he questions Obi-wan), but if you want to see arrogence, just wait till 3 before you start dissing HC's performance.

I think most people don't like the character of Anakin and for some reason they blame it on Hayden not being a good actor. The character of Anakin is whinny, just like his son. If you don't like that, blame it on GL. HC is just portraying Anakin, so if you think Anakin is too whinny, then HC did a good job. Anakin does not have the bada$$ persona of Darth Vader in AOTC yet. He's still a punk kid. Let him fall to the darkside, and everyone's favorite personality will reemerge.

I agree with MObart. Anakin's whiny personality as a character I think has less to do with Hayden as it does with GL. That's clearly the direction he wanted to go with the character and I'll never understand why. You can show Anakin as impatient, rude or partly evil and still make him a much mroe intriguing,e xciting, heroic type of character. He just goes too far with his intentions and rubs people the wrong way as he does incredible deeds. Instead, Anakin really does nothing right! I have said this cien May. We are 2 movies in and what has Anakin done that is truly impressive?? He blew up the droid control ship by accident as a 9 year old in a ridiculous "space luck" scene and he murdered and entire Tusken village and we don't get to see it with the exception of one blink of an eye quick beheading. Everything else he does is a collosal foul up.

But I don't think Hayden is to blame. He didn't write the script. He just recites it. And while I still maintain that Hayden was okay and that other actors could have done just as good a job, he did not make the storyline.

Reminds me of the Portman quote where she said GL was always telling Hayden to rachet up the whining.

I get two things from that:

1: Hayden is portraying Anakin as a whiner because thats the way GL wants the Skywalkers to be.

2: GL is actually talking to this Anakin/Vader.
