FF:WA Lets get things moving then, shall we? The List!

Now then I believe we should be getting things moving with club related stuff so thats what I will start doing, I will be DEMANDING! from now on because asking people nicely just doesnt work.

Below is a list of things I need to get working on and information I need to complete them:

Calling Cards - Text content eg. short contact details

Poster - Once again, text content eg. contact details and/or about us in a few words

Website - I will be typing up a description of what I think the design should look like and if LL is the webmaster (please clarify that) I will send this to him by the weekend. I will outline what ideas I think should go into the design and we can discuss that first before posting results here for you all.

Newsletter - Not a major concern just yet as we need a title but as soon as we have decided on one I can speak to LD (he is newletter dude right, can we clarify this also please) about how he wants to go about it.

Membership cards - Pretty straight forward do we need anything on these at all except for that they have space for someone's name saying they are a member. eg. it might have on the back what % discount is given.

Thats all I will put for the time being until I finish some of this stuff. As this is a LIST however if people that have other duties to do or need things from different people or help of any kind then this is the place to list it.

This is our help board until we have one on the website. Lets hope I can get some replies ay.

 

A few of my thoughts.
I think you're right about membership cards. They don't need to have much more than the name. The rest can be the logo etc. If we were making and printing them all ourselves then we could include a scanned photo of the member on the card but that's probably not necessary.
I don't think the poster needs to have much on it either. Just a brief blurb - the shorter the better. Contact details - probably for SM and I. Website and email address.

 

Done! If someone could email me though contact details and the exact web address (Is it still the one at steve's) and I will finish it up.

I have a few ideas about printing that I will discuss soon.

 

Well I'm not sure who it's up to but I would definitely like to get the webpage started..... I think basically if Soneil decides that I can be webmaster, I'm in, considering he was the only other one up for the position......

At the same time though, one of the only things I don't actually know, is how to set up a bulletin board for a website.....other than using things like EzBoard or something like that. But at the same time I helped set up an EzBoard for Dominion and it is very easy to use and moderate.

Whatever, lets just get it sorted soon though, so we can have something up.

As for the web address, SM and I were batting around the idea of getting a subdomain of iiNet for the address. It is cheap, easy to set up, and gets us an easy to remember web presence. Something like http://outer-rim.ii.net for example.

There are a lot of free forums around of varying quality. They generally let you customise the look to a certain extent. Most of them display ads if they're not registered. Since only members will see it, I don't think it will matter if there's an ad or 2. I've used one on my Footrot Flats site. Have a look
It's pretty good but there may be better ones around.
If we're getting a subdomain then it probably won't matter who hosts the website. We've pretty much all got iiNet accounts. Mine's a web affilliate but the advantages of those accounts are diminishing. They seem to keep taking features that were previously only available with affiliate accounts and adding them to the normal accounts. I'll probably drop the affiliate account when we get around to getting ADSL.
One example of something almost anyone can do now is set up additional email boxes (though mine are still unlimited). That means that pretty much any one of us can set up a club email address. It would probably be best done by whoever has the account the sub-somain is registered for so the domain can be a part of the club address.

 

If we set up an iiNet subdomain, i can set up unlimited e-mail redirects.....
For example i could create soneil@outer-rim.ii.net and have it sent to soneil@oneil.com.au

or Lord_Lazaras@outer-rim.ii.net and have it sent to lazarus@iinet.net.au

or even bob@outer-rim.ii.net and have it sent to frank@hotmail.com

All members could have an "outer-rim.ii.net" e-mail redirected to thier own e-mail address.

I have started setting up a BBS for us and it is looking good.....

All I need is confirmation that I am the webmaster and i will have everything up and running within a week..... As long as that is enough time for SK to have the graphics ready. (No rush, since you all actually have jobs and stuff )

The forum's looking good from the brief look I had. I'll have a better look later. Might I suggest that we focus the club forum on club business. Otherwise, if all the socialising moves to the club forum then this one will go dead.

 

Alright good! I think the club forum would be best left as just business or club/star wars related stuff, but if new members come along and socialise then so be it. We don't want to start telling people (especially new people) go here to socialise and go here to talk business.

LL: Alright I'm going to start sending stuff through to you. Looks like your the webmaster and other people will help you to add stuff to it. I'm workin on the website NOW (actually I was before I got on here) and I will get a rough templete (remember its a template so it looks boring) to you in the next day or so. Then when the graphics are done by the weekend we can drop them in.

What I was going to do for you is set it up in HTML for you so you know how all the graphics piece together. What I need to know is this:

Are we going to use
1) Style sheets
2) Tables
3) Frames

Remember this is just for site construction and how it is setup. Any questions just ask me.

My opinon, if it is going to be a big site I would say style sheets so we dont have to change much, otherwise if we want to get this up really quick then upgrade later Id go with frames/tables.


EDIT: Ok I just had a look at the site LL did so its looks like we are going frames.

LL: Could I possibly get a list of the different links (buttons) we will be needing. I thought a few catagories would be best then we can add new links under each heading. I'm trying to design it in such a way that we can add buttons to it easily anyway, see how I go.

 

the only change from the current buttons on the site that I would like to see, is can we swap "login" for "links".

I would like to put the boards login in the boards section as UmmYep suggestd, which would make the login section redundant. But we still need a links page, so yeah....

I would prefer frames because I have been doing them for so long that I can do them quicker than a style sheet.

 

Alright well I just nutted out some buttons here goes:

HoloNet - contains news & event sections

Holocron - contains games, films (fan or other), history, stories

Comlink - contains links and sponsors (if any)

Downloads (need a slick name here, like the others) - contains pics etc people can download for backgrounds etc.

Join Up - contains information for people that want to join (der!)

Cantina - contains boards (both boards should be put in here, I reckon anyway) and gallery.

Council - contains our council (got great ideas how to put ourselves in here ) and possibly our members listed in here.

The Twin Suns - Thats what I'm calling it so far anyway our newspaper. I think this should be a members only thing where people must log in to access it.

Log In - Members only (der!)


Ok so let us know what you all think. Changes? or does it all sound good? Let us know. I'll keep thinkin about the downloads section.


EDIT: Ok I thought that we might be able to add downloads and even a shop in the same section. Still thinkin of a name but if we will have things to buy in the future then this is the spot. So:

Made quite a bit of progress on the site today so I will finish parts up and start posting it for people to check out very, very soon.

LL: How would you like me to send the images to you, I can zip them up in self-extracting if you like? And do you want me to send over them already built into the HTML so you know how they are pieced together, how ever you want to do it, I'm easy.

 

Send them anyway you like, self extracting or no. Doesn't really matter, but I would like the html so I can see how they all go together in your mind. Thankyou.

 

Yeah thats okay I was going to send you the HTML anyway. I've decided to use tables instead of frames. This way we can convert it to style sheets more easily later down the track.

 

In my opinion, any website these days should be using styles. The worldwide web consortium are doing their best to phase out FONT tags etc and are encouraging developers to switch to CSS. Browsers these days all support it. If you can master HTML you can master Styles. I promose you you'll find using CSS in a website gives you a lot more flexibility and control.
If you need any help with styles, I've been using them a lot for several years so I now styles just as well as I know HTML. I train courses that cover using stylesheets in websites so I can provide manuals that cover it.

 

Ok so lets see what should be done next.

The Newsletter's official name doesnt end just yet so instead of working on that I will begin on the membership cards and/or calling cards.

Membership Cards -
Front: Mainly graphics except for one space so we can add the member's name.
Back: I was thinking of perhaps a discount (if any) on here and even some quick details, maybe the website. Don't know, can someone lend a hand and let me know what they think should be done with this.

Calling Cards - All I need for this is some small details so people know who to contact to join up and ask information about it.

I want to aim to have these viewable for everyone by the end of next week. By then we should know the name of our newsletter.

I also think we should plan another official meet to talk about what needs to be done next. I'd offer my place but I'm still living at home with my parents. Heh! Perhaps not even someone house, maybe Kings Park or something like that.

 

Ok, I don't think we should list businesses giving discounts on the card itself, Businesses will be added, some may want taken off,
But yeah Membership cards for now would be very cool, I already have some businesses lined up ready to go to give us discounts upon presentation of a card, and some still in "um ,ah" mode.
But I think Members name, and the website url would be a good place to start for putting stuff on the card, any other ideas?

EDIT: yes we should have another meet and soon, I don't want to have an "official" meet during something like the crafternoon,
I've said elsewhere I'm moving house soon, so if not there, how about we at least set a date, the weekend after the 29th anyone?

 

that weekend seems good for me (I think). A poll or at least several emails to various people about a date might be in order though.

QUICKIE: Does anyone know the EXACT address of where the site will be? Has anyone found out about .org domains, like are they free?

My uncle is getting back to me soon about a hosting arrangement and possible options. But I thought I'd ask if anyone has already decided on this side of things or not.

As everyone seen the banner? Its okay right? If so, as soon as we have the web address we can send that out. I already have a few places lined up that will put it in there banner runs.

 

Since we haven't had a meeting, there has been no official decision about where it will be hosted.... My honest opinion is that we should get an iiNet subdomain..... It is very cheap and easy to get, and it is very easy to maintain. Last time i checked, ".org" domains aren't free. A subdomain like http://outer-rim.ii.net will set us back $40 per year.

I can confirm that org domains aren't free. I checked about that recently with iiNet. A full domain would be nice but for now I think the sub-domain will be fine. It might be a little premature to tell people when the address isn't official yet but at least we could perhaps start telling people what the most likely addres will be.

 

A subdomain sounds alright for the time being.

On domain side of things we can't have

www.outerim.com - thats taken

and

www.outer-rim.com.au - thats taken too.
