Shouldn't the title read Let's make a SW Republic?

What a bad omen for this republic.

That depends on how you read the title.
If you read it as "S. W." then "an" is the proper article, but if you instinctively translate SW to Star Wars then it sounds awkward.

Sorry fingorfin, but it has nothing to do with the abbreviation!

The indefinite article "a" is changed to "an" before any word beginning with a vowel (a, e, i, o, and u) or a word that begins with a vowel sound. The word star doesn't begin with a vowel or a vowel sound when you abbreviate it.

    An ill omen indeed!

    Edit: Pun intended!

When pronouncing the letter S the first sound is a vowel, therefore "an S" is proper. I know what you are getting at, and I agree it does seem odd.

Sorry I know you like the title, but it's wrong and makes this guy look stupid (as well as other SW fans). The letter "S" is not a vowel and it will never be one. I don't know where you learned English, nor do I care, but the title is still incorrect.

Nothing like an off topic grammar lesson to get a thread going.

    An S is correct.

Now, what shall we do with this?

I would like to be the Intergalactic Banking Clan ;)

The use of "an" as opposed to "a" is related to the sound of the word. Every heard of AN honest person, for example. "On-est."

Note that in English there are exceptions to every rule as has just been pointed out, very good!

However, this does not change the fact that the "an" in the title is used incorrectly.

The point of the other person was that if you said SW as letters, it would sound out as "Ess-double-you"

Which is besides of the point of what did Plo_Klun mean with this thread?

You see I don't even recoginize that as a valid point because that's not the correct way to pronounce the letter "s." There is no "e" in "s."

Well, forget the original poster and let's just do it ourselves!

I say we each pick a faction or planet to represent. Then we'll make a goal and some rules, then go at it.

    I call Intergalactic Banking Clan!
