Court martial and dishonorably discharge the ***holes that did this. And have them register as sex offenders.

I would say the Marine Corps as a whole is complicit if it does not investigate or prosecute.

This will probably be whitewashed, I have little faith.

In situations like this, the "institution" tends to be protected more than the victims.

There will be an investigation, but what will be interesting is what its conclusions and recommendations will be.

The latter should be significant and provide last reforms. But, excuse my scepticism, I don't have high hopes.

So about that "Day Without a Woman" tomorrow:

It's really A Day Without a Privileged Woman

"That's why the idea that women should take a day off en masse to make a political point is both self-defeating and vaguely insulting. It's meant to highlight how crucial we are, but its very premise also suggests the opposite: Women are expendable. A Day Without a Woman plays into the idea that we entered the workforce not to support ourselves and our families but to combat boredom or boost our self-esteem. For all but a very few affluent women, that has never been the case. And for all but the most affluent classes, March 8 will be a day like any other day."

I agree...the marches were a great idea and impactful to an extent, but...I never got how this "day without a woman" was supposed to accomplish anything.

It's illegal in North Carolina for state government employees to strike. I love Chapel Hill, it's by far the most liberal area of the state (even more so than Asheville) and I'm glad the district is supporting its teachers that way. Other districts here are not though.

As far as channeling efforts towards the Democratic Party, I agree, that's not necessarily the solution and I would love to see a real progressive party rise.

In honor of March 8th, a small, but brave group of Russian women held a protest around the Kremlin against misoginy and patriarchy in society.

One group somehow managed to get onto the wall of the Kremlin, over one of the gates, where they lit flares and unfurled a banner denouncing male domination of the government
    [IMG]
"200 years of men in power. Enough!" hehe I am guessing they are referring to the Empress Ekaterina II (Catherine, in the West), the Great, the longest reigning and yet also, sadly, the last female ruler of Russia. Original conqueror of Crinea and founder of that nation"s first public school system. That all was, indeed, two centuries ago. No woman has held power since... Although, today, Valentina Matvienko is the Speaker of the Federation Council (Russian senate), in theory - 3rd most powerful official, who wouod be expected to take on top duties, at least temporarily, if something happened to Putin and PM Medvedev. That's something, right? ;) Unfortunately, she is also a corrupt scumbag, like all the others, her son's wedding cost 20 million Euros, no joke, mama even rented the young couple one of the imperial palaces in St. Petersburg (!) to celebrate in lol

Anyway, another group climbed up on one of the towers and hung a banner calling for feminism to be adopted as Russia's national idea
    [IMG]
The FSO, the Russian Secret Service, is investigating now how these women got past security into these areas haha

And other activists stood at different points outside, in Red Square, with picket signs:

    "Woman for President"

    "Men, out of the Kremlin!"

    "All power to women"
Btw, that cathedral, and the building next to it, for last few years, has served as the Kremlin office of the Orthodox Church. The Church who has pushed new abortion restrictions, decriminalization of family violence, and other sexist legislation. I am guessing this protester did not choose her location at random ;)

    "We are the majority"
Indeed, women are like 55% of population in Russia.

Katrin Nenasheva, an artist and feminist activist later said a dozen women in total, from Moscow and Saint Petersburg, participated in the action. Police caught and arrested 7 of the women. Others got away :)

Good to see some female citizens stand up and show they are not down with the way things are in Russia, especially for their fellow women.

Not sure about the US, but Tampon Tax is used to fund women charities and domestic violence in the United Kingdom. Think our government matches the revenue, to increase funding programs as well.

there's no "tampon tax" per se in the us. tampons are just subject to state sales tax in most states, like other "luxury" items. i guess the uk model is preferable, but i'm not sure the fact that women bleed every month should mean that they should be responsible for paying for domestic violence shelters. seems especially strange when you consider the violence is so often perpetrated by men.

    :D

That first one attacks Yuri Chaika, the General Prosecutor of Russia (like Attorney General in US)
His corruption is pretty much public knowledge. His sons have been photographed associating with gangsters and criminals, including members of the notorious Tsapok crime family in Chaika's hometown of Krasnodar. The Tsapok clan, whose subordinate gangs are known to recruit teenage schoolboys to do violence and other dirty work on their behalf, are said to still, to this day, control much of the Krasnodar region, the drug trade, shaking down local businesses for protection fees, etc, even though their leaders are in prison now; there is speculation, actually, that the Tsapok syndicate, in fact, now works for the Chaika family; imagine that, in America, the ****ing Attorney General has his own mafia syndicate that does his bidding lol Crazy... Welcome to Russia :D On top of that, there was a scandal, three or so years ago, also connected to Chaika, corrupt prosecutors ran and protected a network of illegal casinos. Gambling is illegal in Russia, except in special zones, but illegal casinos are everywhere, even in foreign consulates, apparently (http://boards.theforce.net/threads/...roved-probably.30803452/page-70#post-54181590) lol In that case, crooked region prosecutors, and high ranking police as well, with mob goons doing the grunt work for them, ran a whole huge network of those, all over the countryside surrounding the capital. Raked in big bucks, its a lucrative business. When it came out, people right away thought, Chaika had to know about this. But he is untouchable. Putin's man. Minister of Justice since 1999, Gen Pros since 2006. Unsinkable dude. Will probably die in office, unless Putin dies first and someone better comes along and takes over...

    What a mess, over there...

The only thing I did on a Day Without Women was eat, bathe, and help my boss/sister with her music.

Wendy Davis has said that women should stop "being so nice." What she means is that we have had a wake-up call. We are more assertive collectively. Some have argued that feminism has been revived since the 1970s. I think different forms of feminism have always been around. I recently read about equality feminism, and that applies to most of us in this thread. I don't have to repeat myself about how odious the Trump administration is, given how it is drenched in sexism, racism, transphobia, etc. But as long as we can unite, we can make America better.

I believe Rogue One is a good example of equality feminist literature. Jyn is clearly the equal of every man in the film. She uses her brain to outwit Krennic. This is, after all, why people like Mulan, Elsa, etc. Jyn is in the same tradition.

Honestly though is that really any different from any number of large marches/protests that need people to take time off work for? seems that this is being played up as the article mentions because the protest is not pushing for established democrats as many others have been.

I do think though there needs to be some acknowledgement that Trump isn't merely the latest example of Republicans shifting to the right on social issues but also clear a protest vote against the neoliberial establishment and what is viewed as an ingénue mask of indemnity politics it uses.

In the end Trump won via picking up people who voted Obama in the two previous elections, these people are unlikely to be driven by racism or sexism and to get a different result rhey need to be won back so I think a move away from Clinton style "basket of deplorable" and Van Jones style blanket condescension needs to happen.
