    how would you generate the desired effect of lightsaber clashes from combat in after effects?

    Another method, slightly lazier and more opinion-specific, is to use a standard lens flare under the "Render" menu. That's what I prefer.

    yeah... you CAN use the lens flare. but if you're going for that authentic star wars look and feel, definitely go with ryan w's method. the only guy I've ever seen who made lightsabers look better than the pros over at ILM.
