I've never seen much concrete info about lightsaber blade colors and their significance (particularly since the EU was declared non-canon), so I gathered that the canon details we currently have about them here.

Most of the color significance is clear, but I'm interested in your thoughts about blue and green in particular. Do you still feel like green is the experienced Jedi's choice?

I liked the Legends version, which tied colors to specialities. Jedi who specialised in more diplomatic resolutions to problems tended to have green sabers, those that specialised in "aggressive negotiations" tended to have blue sabers.

I always figured that blue = courage and green = wisdom.

Interesting idea... I kind of thought that like blue was peace and green was... I don't know, purity, nature, harmony or something. And about the experienced Jedi and green... I have no idea.

We also have yellow, white and black in canon. Just a tip so you can update your text.

Argh, I only glanced at really recent topics. Sorry, didn't mean to clog the place up!

There are sections about white, black and yellow (which I almost forgot as I was writing the article!) near the bottom.

No. The color is not the choice of any Jedi.

    Because the crystals choose?

No, because it's something that results from the mutual connection between the person and the crystal.

The 'bad guys', on the other hand, force the connection through the dark side. That results in a red color.

I greatly prefer the new canon method of Lightsaber construction/coloring, as it emphasizes the mythical element of the Force and Jedi and also explains why the weapon would have such a strong connection to the Jedi, and the significance of Red lightsabers within the Star Wars universe (as opposed to the cinematic shorthand red=evil for the audience).

We could perhaps attempt to create a profile of what each color means in the way a character relates to the Force. We do know that the color resulting from bonding with crystal can change over the course of a Jedi's development, as Ashoka's second green crystal had a more yellow-ish tint than her first one. Alternatively, the crystal itself could also contribute color of their own, resulting in the different colored lightsabers created by the same person.

Currently, the only colors in canon with actual meaning attached to them are red, white, and yellow. Red and white are the result of how the bond with the crystal was formed, signalling the status of the wielder as a light or dark side user. Yellow is used as the ceremonial color of the Jedi Temple Guards, which means that it might not have meaning in relation to the Force, but has cultural significance. Presumedly, when a Jedi with a Yellow lightsaber dies, their crystal is given to the guards to be used in their ceremonial blades. If we take Kanan's vision in Rebels Season 2 to be accurate, Jedi training rooms have large collections of Lightsabers, presumedly of deceased Jedi.

It's arbirtrary. I don't think you can create any character profile without inherently contradicting the movies since there was no profiling when the colors were attributed to the characters.

As for Ahsoka's lime green saber, that's Filoni's attempt to shoehorn yellow in, but had to keep it mostly green because of George. He eventually did put yellow with the Temple Guards (which originally had green sabers) and to his luck, George didn't care enough to remove them.

I realize that the colors were created arbitrarily, but perhaps it could be possible to create some sort of diegetical system. It would be impossible to have any sort of fixed rules, but at least a tentative pattern might be doable

It is arbitrary. Rebels throws a wrench in putting meaning behind lightsaber colors. Ezra gets a green blade in season 3 after his original saber was blue. Ezra actually constructed his first lightsaber and bonded with its crystal, unlike Luke. I suppose Ezra's second lightsaber could be someone else's, but you would think they would explain something like that.

Several canon Jedi with more than one Lightsaber have different colors, so this would not be exclusive to Ezra. We can only speculate how one arrives at a certain color, it could be the Force user, the crystal itself, or perhaps other factors

are there? I can't think of any off the top of my head.

there's Pong Krell, probably a visual storytelling device to indicate his duality and foreshadow his eventual treachery.

Thinking about it again, the only ones in canon I thought of where instances of taking another Jedi's blade. Pong Krell, Ezra, and Ashoka seem to be the only ones, ignoring the cases of bleeding crystals rather than bonding

Sure, there's nothing stopping you from doing that. I'm just saying that it's rather pointless to draw out any conclusions from it considering the genesis and attribution of the colors.

EDIT: There was another attempt in TCW to expand the colors through Tera Sinube. They tried to make it white/grey, but at the end of the day, like Ahsoka's second saber, they had to make it part of one of the existing colors: blue.

Never been a fan of the notion of expanding the range of colors. I would have prefered if they had stuck to RGB (coincidentally, the primary colors of light).

I am more comfortable with the new canon explanation for saber colors in general.

In the old EU, Jedi and/or Sith would just go into some cave and chose their crystal color like they're in a grocery shop.

"Hmmm. I'm a bad guy, right? So I'll pick red! That's it! See how evil I am muahahahaha"

The new explanation is way more convincing in terms of in universe lore.
