When were lightsabers developed and what did the Jedi use before them?

I think I read somewhere (I think) that the Jedi used normal swords before they discovered the crystals used to make their lightsabers.

Metal swords at first, like the ones we know from our history. Then the first lightsabers were developed, but they had to wear them attached to a power source on the back, attached with a cable to the hilt - I suppose it would like similar to the ghost busters setup, apart from having blasters, it would be a lightsaber connected to the cable.

 

Yeah, regular swords but 'powered by the Force'. As in, a force projection around the sword blade to give it an extra bit of oomph.

 

The lightsaber has been the weapon of the Jedi for thousands of years.

 

sorry to get OT: but wouldn't it be great to see a fanfilm showng the jedi BEFORE the lightsabre was invented!!! somthing original for once

 

Yeah I think the Jedi have been using lightsabers for 10 000 years or something, but the Force was discovered long before the lightsaber was invented, so therefore there were Jedi using regular swords, possibly augmented with the Force.
