I found out today that the LOTR extended edition is $139!

That is WAY to expensive! :(

    What does everyone elese think?

This price was from Kmart, and they have CHEAP prices. I would hate to think of the prices at other places... most likely around the $150 mark.

Wouldn't that be the 5-Disc one with the Argonath book-ends? Thats the collectors edition.

Is that an American based online store, ie: is that in US currency?

There are 2 versions coming out this week.

The EXTENDED EDITION is 4 discs and retails for around $79.95. (You can find it online for around $65-70).

The COLLECTORS EDITION is a 5 disc set with bookends, collectors cards and other stuff. It's RRP is around $150. Essentially, this is just the EXTENDED EDITION with a nice box, an extra disc (with a National Geographic Documentary) and some cool LotR stuff.

Alright. Have we got that now?

Also, the UK Collector's Edition doesn't come with the 5th disc due to licencing reasons, so it's probably cheaper due to that.

You should be expecting to pay around $150 for the collector's edition. Which is why it's called the Collector's Edition. We like to spend lots of money on classy Argonath bookends and the like.

Wait, Sil, let me see if I got this right. The Extended Edition is $150 and the Collector's Edition comes with a Yoda plushie toy?

And what's an "editiom"? Sounds like a medical condition... is it stress related?

    :D :D

Edit - Is there an edition that comes with a spellchecker? Cause I could really use something like that.

    Sil speaks the truth.
www.ezdvd.com.au puts the RRP of the standard Extended Edition (4-disc) at $75. The Collecter's Edition is somewhere in the vicinity of $150, and comes with a bonus disc with the National Geographic (I think) documentary, and the fancy-schmancy Aragornath book-ends.

And extra $75 for a couple of statues and a doumentary I think I may have already seen doesn't strike me as worth it. I will be picking up my copy of the Extended Edition tomorrow when I go to get AOTC. :D

    Gatherer is right.

In the K-Mart catalog, the picture only had 4 discs, and said $139...

I just took it as a typo and ignored it! :D

I bought it today! :D Actually, I bought 2 x Special Edition, 2 x Collectors edition, for friends. Fiends, that is, who are only friends when they need your staff discount! ;)

Most of the way through watching it; up to Moria. Much better film with the added stuff.

And I've got AotC too! :p

I guess with christmas coming up and the supsequent hype of the sequel, that New Line feels that they can basically charge anything and people will buy it. They're probably right.

I heard somewhere that Kmart is having a 15% off sale towards the end of this week, so keep an eye out for that. And I also heard a few weeks back that Blockbuster had the 5 disk version for a piddly $125.

A price matching effort at Kmart will get you 10% off the difference.

As you can see, I've been shopping around. But I'm still not too sure if I want to get it just yet.

If you're a fan of the book then it's a no-brainer - you MUST get the extended version! :D Unlike the film, which catered to the illiterate unwashed masses :p the film assumes you know the know the book and isn't shy making references to things within the book that would be lost on the film audiences - like the wood elves at the start (just before Tom Bombadil), or the extended lament for Gandalf at Lothlorien. It's very funny to watch little bits added in of Gandalf telling Pippin he's an idiot, and Gimli snoring so loud Aragorn has to hit him! :) Now, I've got to finish my essays and THEN I'll play with the special features.
Ah, can't wait for The Two Towers! :D

Just got back from buying AOTC at Kmart and noticed them putting the two versions of LOTR out on shelf. $60 for the 4-disk version and $118 for the 5-disk version. I ask if they knew of any upcoming 15% off sales and they all looked at each other and sort of nodded and I said, "Thursday/Friday?" and they just smiled nodded a bit more.

So $100 for the 5 disk version tomorrow at Kmart.
