Lucas took our critisms of TPM to heart

The prequels sell fantastic their first week, and then drop-off very large and very quickly.

Yeah but that could be said for any movie hollywood churns out the last few years, especially during the summertime. During the summertime there is a new blockbuster to end all blockbusters every week to 2weeks, if not 2 or 3 on the same Friday, so there is a lot more options. Just look at this summer, X-Men was released, followed by Matrix, than a couple of weeks later was Hulk. Not only are there more options for the viewer, there is less space for the theatre owner to show all of these 'blockbusters.' It will be very difficult, if not impossible to have another phenomenon such as when Star Wars was first released. The only movie that even comes close would have to be Titanic. While I am not a fan of Titanic, it has been the only movie released in this day and age that has had an extended stay @ #1.

Now what happens, when Star Warsstarts to go down after a couple of weeks, the media immediately says it is b/c the movie was horrendous; when it really has to do w/ the competition for both viewers and theatres.

Combine this w/ticket prices going up, people cannot afford to see movies as much as they used to. In fact 2003 was the first year movie ticket sales went down. Obviously George's fault for that one..

Star Wars = lots of toys make lots of money

Return of the Jedi - wookies on endor, + ewoks on endor instead = decision to make more money as logic says that kids would buy cute ewoks rather than gruff wookies toys

Jar Jar Binks = created to appeal to kids to make lots of money.

ENGLISH: George places certain marketable aspects upon characters in his films obviously, as they will appeal more in the toy market. Examples in the OT: he replaced the Wookies on Endor with Ewoks because kids will likely flock to them in the stores (according to Gary Kurtz the producer). Boba Fett was a marketable character and sold many a toy, so he was brought back. Jar Jar just didn't hack it in the toy market during episode I.

If George Lucas truly took fan's criticisms to heart, I would say fans can't complain that George Lucas doesn't care what the fans think.

George Lucas = Most artistically-minded director

Star Wars = Deep mythology that anyone can relate to regardless of age or education.

Return of the Jedi - Wookies on Endor, + Ewoks on Endor instead = Lucas originally intended there to be a ground battle with primitive Wookies in ANH. He had to cut down on the cost of the production, and the ground battle was discarded. They had already made up a Wookie costume, and George liked it so much, he made Chewbacca Han's technically savvy co-pilot. When he got to ROTJ, he decided to take the ground battle off the shelf again, but because he already established Wookies as being technically savvy, he had to come up with an alternative race of primitives. At the end of the day, when you get right down to it, Ewoks are simply Wookies cut in half. If Lucas had used Wookies, we would have gotten the same toys, they would have just been a little taller.

Jar-Jar Binks = Created to appeal to kids and to add some comic relief in a story about political machinations.

Less Jar-Jar Binks in Episode II = Jar-Jar's role in the story of AOTC wasn't as big as it was in Episode I.

George creates his characters in such a way as to best suit the story he is telling. When Hasbro asked him to create things that would be easier to make into toys, he told them his job is to make the movie, and their job is to make the toys.

Kids would have flocked to the Wookie toys as much as they did the Ewok toys.

Boba Fett was a character Lucas created to fill a certain role in the original trilogy. He says he always thought of Boba Fett as having some relation to the Stormtroopers, so when fans voiced their adoration of the character, it was a no-brainer to use Boba in the prequels.

Lucas does want to eventually sell his related merchandise, but he does that by making the best movie he can make, so the toys based on it will be popular. To him, the movie and the story come first and the toys come second.

At the end of the day, when you get right down to it, Ewoks are simply Wookies cut in half.

Actually, I would say that Ewoks are Wookiees cut in thirds. Maybe even quarters in some cases.

 

Height wize, but they make up for that with their girth.

 

But they both have the same size hearts - and that's what counts!

(Although if those tiny Ewoks had the same size hearts as the giant Wookiees, wouldn't they be constantly falling to the left because of unequal weight distribution? Just an observation.)
