In TESB after Luke's snow speeder was shot down during the battle of Hoth, Luke pauses and does a little double take before he gets out of the speeder. Was Luke checking to see if Dack was still alive or was he getting the explosive device to later bring down the AT-AT Walker or both?

I'd say Luke knew long before then that Dack was dead.
...in fact, he'd always known. ;)

He's just trying to get whatever he needs out of the speeder - more to the point, his lightsaber.

I think the novelization mentions that Luke did try to get Dack out at first, but couldn't before the walker came upon them, so he then went for the grenade and cable before ducking out.

Luke's actions in the film seem to support this as well.

Well... he was trying to save Dack's wallet anyway...

He was just going after his grenade and grappling harness.

Gathering all his strength, Luke quickly squeezed himself from under the twisted metal of the control board and moved up against the top of his cockpit. Somehow he managed to open the hatch halfway and climbed out of the ship. With each elephantine step of the oncoming walker, the speeder shook violently. Luke had not realized just how enormous these four-legged horrors were until, unprotected by the shelter of his craft, he saw one up close.

Then he remembered Dack and returned to try to pull his friend's lifeless form from the wrecked speeder. But Luke had to give up. The body was too tightly wedged in the cockpit, and the walker was now almost upon him. Braving the flames, Luke reached into his speeder and grabbed the harpoon gun.
    - ESB novelization

Well, you're right about the book. Guess I'll have to watch ESB again. (Like that's unusual. ;) )

That's what I always saw in that scene, that Luke was first trying to get Dack out, then when he saw how close the walker was and realized he couldn't get Dack, just grabbed the grenade and harpoon gun and got the hell outta the way.

I think he was checking Dack was alive, but actually intended to get the grenade and harpoon.

I'd always assumed he was checking to see if Dack was alive and then decided to pull him out. I knew he went for the weapons the last time though.

I think Luke knows Dack is dead when he doesnt answer Lukes call moments before.

    "I've lost my gunner."

Well, Dack could have still been alive and merely unconcious- either way, Luke was without a gunner.
