This will be the quasi-sequel to the Skywalker-Jade Revival Society discussion thread. Here we are dedicated to keeping the LOVE of Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade ALIVE through discussion, an index of fanfics, and challenges, in a more up-to-date and new thread.

Let's get started!

So, first discussion topic and challenge of the new thread! I'm going to try to keep both broad.

Discussion: Because the EU is now known as a "Legacy" and, let's face it, not much (if anything) will be added to the "story" we used to consider canon, what is your final verdict of how the EU handled the relationship between Luke and Mara?
Because we probably won't see much more written in the "Legacy" canon, do you think this gives you more freedom to play with it because there will be nothing more officially added? Or does the lack of new material restrict you in terms of "jumping off" points.


Challenge:

We have started a new thread and are about to embark on a new year. Write a story with Luke and Mara celebrating something new. You must include:
- the colour red
- a gift
- a loud noise

 

I can't complain much about the broad details of the LM relationship. I liked that they didn't get together right away, I liked they, you know, got together at all, and I do like that they got a kid. The finer details are why I like fanfic.

About 50% of my stuff is like complete AUs, like the fic I'm working on now really only takes into account up to ROTJ, so it doesn't really effect half my stuff at all. But the other half of my stuff is some what rooted in the EU and I think it gives me much more freedom. I have a plot bunny jumping on me that takes place ~5 years after FOTJ. It would probably be considered "AU" by most people's standards, but because it takes into account all the EU up to Crucible, and because nothing is going to be published any time soon to contradict it, I can consider it 'continuing canon'

 

Hooray!! A new thread and a holiday challenge!!! Now, ladies (and gents), y'all know ginchy waits allllllllllll year like a good little gal for holiday romance so, if you would...

Uh, Legends. Let's see. Well, I stopped reading so I don't really know how it all ended with Luke and Ben, tbh. (I only know what others have told me). I did read Outcast while writing EoA, and it made me feel a lot better after the stuff in Sacrifice, regarding Luke and Ben's relationship. As for Mara and Luke, I mean, I think we got what we got and some of it was good, and some of it was (really) bad, but at least we got it, you know? I mean, I came to SWEU to look for Luke having a girlfriend, and he eventually had a wife and a child, so.... yeah. I love Mara. I love Luke. I love Ben. They're always going to be 'canon' to me. As for writing, I do think having new EU helped in giving jumping off points, or scenes that you could change and add to. I think there will always be new fics with Mara and Ben, but over time they'll dwindle, just as they have been doing. It's just the nature of the fanfic beast. But they'll always be around and I look forward to all the AUs (or canon??) fics that'll come about from Ep VII.

 

Hmmm. I think the legends thing will eventually lead to fewer EU as we knew it, fics to fade and be swallowed up by those that lead up to, or agree with EP7, even if they are AUs to what is finally released... the plots and characters will be totally new. This will probably lead to more writing overall but Mara will always be the benchmark for anyone Luke happens to be paired with. A very hard act to follow.

 

Hello! I have to say I am a fan of this thread and want to keep the love of Luke and Mara alive as well!

 

In a way, I would prefer Jedi monk Luke in EP7 to Luke married to somebody I don't like. At least with Jedi monk we can write stories showing he wasn't the celibate Jedi he claims he was. lol!

 

Luke Skywalker is too hot to be a hermit. Or a widower. Or anything else. Bring on Mara or any woman.

Overall, I think it was handled pretty well considering outside story circumstances (many different authors who didn't know what was going to possibly happen later/what other authors wanted to do with characters). Overall, I loved their relationship and how it was handled. Luke/Mara is what really got me into the EU which took my love of Star Wars to a whole different level than it had been which honestly has done so much for my life. No matter what happens to Luke in the movies, even if he ends up in a relationship and even if I love her, Mara will always be his true love and his wife to me.

It kinda is both for me. New stories do give me new ideas, but then knowing there isn't going to be anything else can also give more of a feeling of anything goes (not that it really didn't before). But most of my stuff usually ends up AU anyway, so I don't know that it will really restrict me, more, not give me as many ideas of alternate to what was already written.

For the most part, I think it was handled very well. As mavjade said above, considering the numerous authors who tackled the relationship over the course of so many works, I always thought it was fairly well streamlined. They didn't get together too soon, or too easily. They had to fight for it and that is what made it special, in my opinion. Mara will always be the benchmark for me in terms of romantic pairings for Luke, whether that be in the new films or new books.

For me personally, since I exclusively write AU, I doubt that any new/lack of new material will restrict me at all.

 

I'm happy with some aspects of the Legends L/M relationship, and unhappy with others - for me, fanfic has always been much better and engaging than the profic and I don't really get hung up on "canon". I think I will like the new movies and while they will be officially "canon," in my opinion my own personal canon is whatever I want it to be, and that is with Luke and Mara both alive and together.

I don't think it's restrictive at all - there will always be AUs and new ideas and explorations of L/M in different universes. I'm anticipating that there will be a lot of "Mara in Episode VII" or universe-hopping/time-travel fics to include her in the new canon - there are certainly a plethora of "Mara in the OT" fics so I don't see why us L/M fans won't be writing Mara into the "canon" universe as well. If anything, it gives more options to explore the L/M relationship, although of course depending on how Luke's character in Episode VII. To be honest I would not be surprised at all if Luke was written to have an unnamed wife who died at some point prior to Episode VII, and we can all speculate that it was Mara and write fic surrounding those missing 30 years between ROTJ and TFA.

Lol. Bottom line: it was better than nothing. It started out superbly, then the ball was dropped, then they were rushed together, then a bunch of needlessly angsty junk got wedged in there AND THEN IT ENDS IN TEARS. Alas, poor Yorick. But they still got together, huzzah. *raises glass*

ALL BETS ARE OFF, LOLZ. Really, it never stopped anyone from glorious fanfic anyway, but I do feel a greater sense of playing outside of the Legends sandbox now. (Especially with seeing those amazing plot bunnies on Tumblr, rawr.) Although it's kind of silly fun to keep the Bantam era and use that end as a jump point while ignoring most of Del Rey.

My True Love Gave to Me

 

I want him to have a child (preferably Domhnall Gleeson, but I'd accept Daisy Ridley's "Rey," too). Other than that, his spouse can be dead/divorced/missing. As long as there is EU and fanfic to detail who exactly she is, I'm all for them revealing her later. The continuation of the Skywalker line is most important to me.

That said, I highly doubt I'll dislike his potential new wife, whomever she may be, but I don't know whether I'll like her as much as Mara.

 

Not sure if anyone remembers my rants during the time when Sacrifice came out, but I had them. I stopped reading the EU books after that one. I tried to skim the next one, got to Mara's funeral, and the book almost ended up slammed against the wall (I was in a public bookstore at the time, so probably not a great idea). I wrote all kinds of fan fiction on the subject that was pro-Mara. Even rewrote the ending to Sacrifice. All along I wished they would revamp the whole thing just to let Mara live.

Well....here we are. They revamped the EU, all right. They redid EVERYTHING!

Maybe I wished TOO hard?

So, let's get to the reason why Disney/Lucasfilm erased the EU. That and control. The EU was too vast for them to control all of it, so they made it into Legends. They would rather appease the majority of Star Wars fans who love only the movies over giving the small percentage of those fans who even know of the EU their favorite characters. But they are only doing this in terms of the new movies they plan to make. It doesn't seem to me that the new Lucasfilm cares if we the fans keep writing our favorite characters of Legends, despite the fact that we may never have another book based on the original EU. See, there's no money involved in fan fiction.

Since I didn't follow the books after a certain point, I'm not sure how the relationships of the Skywalker family would have turned out. To me, I thought Mara and Luke would grow old together. I thought perhaps Mara should have had another child. For me, there's more of a dynamic when both parents live, instead of having the child grow up with one parent and an only child. Star Wars has worn out growing up with one or less parent to death (no pun intended).So now, here's our chance, fellow fan fiction writers. The EU is now in a shambles, but only on the surface. The movies will exist on their own plane of existance, or canon. There doesn't have to be new books to create more stories for me. There are more stories in the galaxy of Star Wars that are still out there. They just have to be found.

 

So, I'm here, writing my piece for the holiday challenge and it is getting progressively NOT SAFE for these boards. I'm like "I cant post this here!" I didn't intend to write a mainly PM only fic, but the actual portion I can openly post isn't exactly long. It's one of your guys' fault. I don't know who, but my muse has been corrupted.


As for Mara in the movies, I am fully expecting Mara not to be there. I think most of us are expecting Ridely to play a Solo, and given that her name is Rey and not Jaina, I've given up hope that any scrap of the EU will remain. Though I do hope that Luke has a kid/kids. In my ideal/semi-realistic world, Luke will have a son in the new movies and the "mother" will be mentioned, but not explored in-dept (so she's dead), so we can fill that in with books, and if we don't like the books, we can pretend those don't exist and just fill in the gaps with Mara

 

My hope for EP7 is the North Koreans are extreme Mara Jade Fans and will hack into the Disney site and demand that she is added into movie!! And they want a love scene written by ginchy !
