That's not why Luke senses the dark side. He senses it because the place is a domain of evil and it is radiating from there. What Luke was asking and what Yoda tells him is how will Luke know the difference between using the Force for good and using it for evil. He was already calm and at peace when he stopped running. Luke doesn't understand how using his anger and hate, can lead to corruption like it did with Vader. If a Jedi is to use the Force to battle evil, how can it easily be twisted towards evil. That's why Yoda directed him towards the tree cave, because it was time for him to understand the distinction.

The battle against the Sith is about using the Force without fear, anger and hate. When Luke faces Vader in the cave, he is doing so out of fear. He's afraid of Vader because he is evil incarnate, in his mind. That fear turns to anger because this is the man who betrayed and murdered his father, as well as Obi-wan. That anger can quickly become hate and why he strikes Vader's head off. He has no compassion in his heart for this twisted individual. This is why he has failed because he let his emotions lead him into battle. And it is why when he faces Vader on Cloud City, he makes the same mistake. He draws his saber intending to take on the man who murdered his father and mentor and who tortured his friends. That's why Vader can sense Luke's emotions in their battle.

VADER: "You have learned to control your fear. Good. Now, release your anger. Only your hatred can destroy me."

When he faces him the third time, he knows that he can be turned if he doesn't keep his head in the game and fight without emotion, other than compassion. What Yoda wanted Luke to understand is that he will not need to fight, not that he cannot fight. But Luke thinks that he has to fight and this why he failed the test.

Lucas wasn't speaking or intending irony. He was speaking of symbolism. That a Jedi who uses a Lightsaber will survive longer in a tense situation, than without it. That when they lose their Lightsaber, the odds of them dying increase. Not that it is impossible to win, but far more difficult. And when Luke finally tosses down his saber, he's making a conscious choice to give up his life rather than turn.

Firstly, its a warning that is Luke goes down the path of Dark Side he will become like Vader.

Secondly, a foreshadowing, that Luke is the Son of Skywalker, i.e. Vader. George was giving the fans a hint long before "I am your Father."

Thirdly, it is perhaps a prophetic sign of Dark Empire and what may happen in The Last Jedi (Skywalkers can't seem to stay clean, Light Side forever).
