I was thinking yesterday and I began to wonder in eppy 5 luke loses his saber, then in eppy 6 when him leia, nad han are on the forest moon of endor and luke goes and meets vader and at that time he has a new saber, he claims he made it but then were did he get the material for it (mainly where did he get the crystal, the thing that makes the lightsaber work) because he would not have know the planet their found on since he had no jedi of the old republic to ask,
unless the spirit of obi-wan told him-doubtful

    so whats the deal?

He found a journal in Obi-Wan's hut, telling him how to make a lightsaber. So during the time between ESB and ROTJ, that's what he did while Leia, Chewie and Lando went off to look for Boba Fett.

Although I don't really know the storyline "deal" with it, I was lead to believe the change in lightsaber was because the blue sabre (not sure of the colour) didn't show up to well on the sandy background of Tatooine, maybe someone can clear this up.

Right, George Lucas changed the blade from blue to green so it would show up better in Tatooine. Although, I think blue would have shown up fine on tan.
I think it would have been difficult to see in the throneroom.
Also, a blue blade would have looked terrible with the hilt.

You can see what Luke's blue lightsabre looked like in the ROTJ trailer.

Green is my favourite sabre colour, so I'm glad they decided to add it :)

The thought of Luke cannibalizing Qui-Gon's saber for crystals has always been an interesting thought for me.

Imagine if the blue saber had shown up fine on the Tatooine location.

Would we have green sabers today in the prequels? [face_shocked]

    Makes ya wonder, eh?

Heh, yeah. It probably would've remained blue for heroes and red for villains.

I like that they added green, more variety, plus I think it's cooler.

Luke didn't cannibalize Qui-Gon's saber; he manufactured his own crystals.

That's EU! Don't bring EU into this conversation!

I'm sorry... I accept EU, but I just felt like I had to beat the purists to the punch.

No, he manufactured the crystals himself, using a pressure cooker he found in Obi-Wan's hut.

Yes, indeed. The secret to making a lightsabre crystal - get yourself a microwave.

    *Laughs*

    Exactly! :p

But yeah, I prefer green lightsabers over the other colors.

I found it interesting how they described Luke making his new lightsaber in Shadows of the Empire as well.

Luke not only learned how to make a lightsaber from Obi Wan's journal, but he also finished his training with the studies Obi Wan wrote in there. Yoda can tell Luke has become wiser in ROTJ with the training he gave Luke and Obi Wan probably told Yoda through the force that Luke had gone to Tattoine and learned from the journal he wrote for him. Yoda knew Luke learned enough and decided that once he faced Vader, he'd be a Jedi.

The first part of the RotJ novelization has a pretty cool desription of the setting of when Luke builds his saber...
