ST Lupita Nyong'o (Maz Kanata) in Episode VII

This is what I wrote about not too long ago. Some people think Nyong'o is entitled to be a leading character, preferably a jedi, who gets to kick butt while looking beautiful in gorgeous clothing. They think she is practically doing Star Wars a favor by offering her services (no, her very presence) to the franchise. Even though she has only been in a couple of other movies totaling rough 30 minutes of screentime they apparently consider her to be one of the greatest talents the industry has to offer. And that's their right but it gets to a point that these folks get disappointed if Nyong'o is rumored to be playing a role that they feel is beneath her..And then there appears to be those whose main reason for wanting Nyong'o in SW is just to see her, in her own flesh, in such a mainstream motion picture. Which means if she plays an alien (which we can't confirm at this time) this won't come to pass. I'm somewhat sympathetic to this but ultimately my stance is SW is bigger than any one person/performer and therefore if this is the role that was available to Nyong'o then so be it. She and her agency really pursued the role she got so they must have been satisfied with what they knew about the role going in.

 

What he did to Saldana? You mean giving her a major role in ST even though Uhura was nothing but a bit player in the original series? Under JJ's run Uhura became one of the Big Three of Star Trek even though in the original series it was Bones who was part of that main trio. And Uhura got a relationship with Spock to boot which made her even more relevant in the films.

I don't get why you keep dragging poor Ahmed best into the whole discussion. Nyong'o is already an established personality known across the world. Best on the other hand came into SW as a complete unknown. And unlike Nyong'o he had not won an Academy Award before being cast in SW. There is no chance of Nyong'o ending up being another Ahmed Best. And while I'm at it there zero chance of her being the next Serkis either unless she wants to do mo-cap for most of her roles going forward.

 

I think Lupita will be the alien MSW are talking about. The thing with SW is, if you're a big fan, you may well take on a role you might not normally.

 

So.....you need an elderly actress to play a CGI/mo-cap elderly alien? I don't get it. Younger performers play characters older than them (whether it be via makeup or special effects) all the time. It is a time-honored tradition in Hollywood.

And why would putting the OT's elderly characters out to pasture make it unreasonable for a new elderly character to be brought into the mix? Is there a problem with having an elderly character in the new films; must all of the cast be young? And frankly if she is playing an alien maybe that species is still as strong and virile at an old age as humans are at a young age.

 

Exactly. Jedijax is one of the big Nyong'o supporters here so he/she is basically stating that Ashoka is a role WORTHY of Nyong'o.

I can't speak for all worshippers but for me I just think she's gorgeous and want to see her beauty reflected in a galaxy far far away. If we don't get to see it then we don't. Hopefully her character will still be fun and we'll get to see some fab mocap acting from her instead.

@Tattooine Twilight, I mentioned Zoe simply because I didn't care for how her Uhura was portrayed. I haven't seen her in a lot of things, but after posting I did go to her imdb and saw she has a very long list of roles so I would say she's doing just fine, and that's a good thing.

I mention poor Ahmed a lot because I'm an Aspie (Aspergers Syndrome) and so I tend to obsess and worry about things that neurotypical brains might not. *shrugs* I thank you for your assurances that my worries are silly and unfounded.

more like if they make her an alien that he wants her to be a Ventress/Tano type character, basically a kickass female character.

 

Note how the shift has move to the female side on this new group of heroes. Just two males (Boyega and Isaac) as BB-8 is rumored to be a she as well.

True. Good news to those demanding a stop on the caucasic blonde male as a lead as there is no trace of him. Nor about any north american lead. Two brits, one latin, and the main leads a female and a black male. I have to say I wouldný have mind the same lead structure than previous trilgies. But I´m happy with this one as well.

 

Ironically I am not qualified for either although it appears as such. I have not seen any movie with Lupita in it but have seen clips and know the status she currently holds in Hollywood. As for Ashoka, I only know here from tiny bits of TCW I've seen and at least know she was a pseudo-padawan of Anakin's which could easily tie in the series and Anakin's story.

But that being said, the "elder" status and orange skin at least connects. Something new is fine too. Like the rest of us, I'll just have to see how it all plays out.

That being said, the word "sidekick" has such an awful connotation to it that often sounds like a comical, bumbling character that is more cute and funny rather than truly purposeful.

 

Maybe she could be under lots of makeup?

 

Maybe Rose doesn't go on a journey with them. Maybe she takes Rey to a place like the Dagobah cave where she sees visions that include her, Finn, BB8, Kylo Ren etc. This would be the point in the movie when there's a bunch of exposition on the plot anyways. Perhaps while Rey is with Rose, Han is off talking with Leia at the castle. The pub/cantina could be a hang out for rebels and pilots while not flying.

There's a show called Steven Universe that has an episode title Rose's Room. I don't know much about the show, but the episode is about Steven entering a room in the crystal temple which turns into a dream state. The show itself premiered last year so it might have been fresh on peoples minds when coming up with the code name. Incidentally the creator of the show used to be an artist for Adventure Time which has a main character named Finn. The episode also features an ancient object that gets activated and one of the characters accidentally breaks something with it.

Was just introduced presenting on the Golden Globes as "Lupita Nyong'o from Star Wars: The Force Awakens." It has begun!

I was just coming to this thread to post that. I had to rewind (is that still what we call it?) the DVR because I thought the announcer said "From Star Wars Episode Seven, the voice of..." but upon re-watching they said "The Force Awakens." :-(

Yeah, I was a little more excited about that last night than I probably should have been.

 

If I was in the audience I would have just flat out pounded back a drink and hollered "dahhh, talk about Star Wars!" mid-introduction. Then be escorted out.

 

Did anyone else just notice Lupita in the Age Of Ultron trailer or was that just me??

 

she's not in Avengers.
