ST Lupita Nyong'o (Maz Kanata) in Episode VII

To get this thread back on track: It appears she is a new alien and not a species recognizable from the EU. That or they're scrapping an EU design and making her a Bothan... or another species name from the EU

Unless one knows President Obama's parentage, he would in most instances be perceived as a black man. He has black skin, and he has African-American features, and so that's how he is viewed in America. You need only read the man's words to understand this. In that context, he decided to self-identify as black. That's all that matters. The science of his mixed race parentage means nothing. As I said, many Americans have mixed race background, whether they know it or not. Many whites have black ancestors, and many blacks have white ancestors (who Charles Barkley hilariously called "creepers"). The important thing, when it comes to race, is how one is perceived, and how that affects how one is treated. President Obama decided, at some point after living in America for a long while, that he identified as black. That's how others saw him, and that's how he came to see himself. In that context, he is a black man. Nothing you say will change that.

Hope we get an official name for the character if not how she'll actually look on screen.

 

I am kinda disappointed she is playing a Mo Cap Character. The only Black Women indeed not White Women or Alien Women characters we have had have been distinctly background characters.

Besides Sabine I guess but I am not really counting the cartoons.

Well cant really comment on that character we dont know anything about her might even be an Alien. And I seriously doubt she will be a major secondary character

And FTR I reckon she jumped at the chance to play something so different from anything she has done before. Motion-capture characters and voice characterisations have their own unique set of challenges and I'm willing to bet that Lupita's considerable talent will make this a truly iconic role.

 

Will they reveal the character's actual name or is Rose official now?

 

I´ve only seen Lupita in 12 Years a Slave. She is such a talent. I´m confident she will exceed our expectations in any kind of role.

 

They're going to reveal Rose today, I'm sure. If Jar Jar was relevant back in 1999 she better be too.

They just revealed that Lupita's character is named Maz Kanata!

 

Her real name is Maz Kanata.
