ST Lupita Nyong'o (Maz Kanata) in Episode VII

She looks a cool alien. Reminds me a bit of Johnny Depp's CGI character Rango:



Or is that a leaked image of Snoke? No... I think it's Rango!

 

From the way her hand looked I imagine a species that has the height of Yoda but looks similar to Ashoka or Hera's species.

 

Yeah, it seems to be more of a graceful, exotic look than an ugly alien type as most of the concept art for her has been. I'm almost getting a Taun We vibe from her profile in the trailer.

 

I highly doubt the character will be as old and wrinkly as depicted in the concept art. In the trailer you see that her arms and face are very youthful.

What a talented, intelligent, attractive lady Lupita is. Damn.

 

I wonder if that is Anakin's Lightsaber crystal or not.

 

Without a doubt, it is. Or was supposed to be. I don't think we will see Maz disassembling the lightsabre, just a remark regarding the crystal within.

It seems the original Maz concepts have been repurposed for lesser characters/alien extras...I'm guessing the final Maz look will be influenced somewhat by Lupita's face, and it'll be a more attractive alien, younger and less wrinkly with some of Lupita's bone structure. And I'm glad! Having a mystical, small, elderly alien is too much like Yoda. Not fresh. I also expect her to play a larger role as the series progresses to the point where she does something really cool and critical for the heroes in Ep 9!

 

Whoa! Surprised to see the Maz section fall onto page 4. Just rekindling it, I can't wait to see what they've done with the two motion capture characters. Apparently we're not seeing either until release. Given the quality of Caesar and co in the apes films, already pushing the ground-breaking tech in Avatar, I have no doubt they've pushed the bar even higher.

Couldn't they have just allowed her to act with no alien makeup?

 

No, because that's not who the character is. Maz Kanata isn't human. They could have easily gotten a different actress and still done the same approach that they did for Lupita.

 

Because the actors are there to serve the characters and the story, not the other way around. Seriously dude, just stop already!

Very probably not, Maz is female and will not look that ugly.

 

Spoilers indicate Maz hands Leia the lightsabre in the trailer, if so then her eyes appear to be much larger, black and glassy.

 

It looks very much like the supposed Maz concept art. If it's not her, it makes you wonder who they gave the design to and was important enough to have the motion capture/puppetry work as well.

 

You really think they will put Lupita's voice to that?
