I was late getting to last week's episode, just watched last night.

    Sally Draper owned it.

Sally's line to Don is easily one of the smartest things anybody on that show has ever said. The fact that it was Say talking to Don made it even better. Perhaps she'll only need half a decade instead of a full decade of therapy to cope with her childhood.

Yeah, Don and Betty were outrageously creepy with the youngsters coming on to them. If they could've gotten away with it, they would've devoured those kids. In the end, I think those two were truly made for each other.

Don was acting inappropriately, but I don't think he ever entertained the notion of sleeping with Sally's friend. That's one reason he thought responding to the flirting was okay. That and he didn't want to humiliate her by shooting her down (which is fair enough I suppose, but he didn't have to give her a cigarette).

Yep. Conversely, Betty doesn't say it would be wildly inappropriate with Glen; she says she's married. Still the child.

I loved this episode. Seeing Don as basically a manager, without much creative vision, is interesting.

At least Betty was flirting with an eighteen year old.

Marten Weiner looks like Joaquin Phoenix.

    You think?

I found all those Glen scenes strange. I know he's a bit messed up and has always pined for Betty Draper Francis and proper parents etc. But his confession about "flunking out" just didn't move me at all; it wasn't that the plight wasn't common of a lot of young men in and around that time; it's that because of the nature of the confession it seemed... diluted in impact.

All I could think about was that Betty only suggested her marriage was a barrier to their having sex.

Well, that is the only barrier. He's legal, so....

I don't think Don was behaving very inappropriately. The girl was flirting with him, and he did his best to just ignore it while still being affable and entertaining the table without making it awkward. He wasn't returning any interest. It's just that he's very smooth with it because it's the same thing he does all day handling clients. Ignore or try to redirect the awkwardness while still being a pleasant host.

The problem was that Sally, knowing he's a womanizer, and already sickened by Betty legitimately eye-****ing Glenn, interpreted Don's impersonal smoothness under fire as his playing ladies' man. But it was Don Draper, ad man, not Don Draper, ladies' man, on display.

I think the ad man and ladies man blend together. I mean, he's seduced clients before.

Rachel, and that's about it. He's not usually looking to nail Herb the Jaguar guy just because he's schmoozing him.

The first scene of this entire season was about Don blurring the lines between work relationships and his sex life. It might have been a model, rather than a client, but it certainly didn't make the point that Don finds it easy distinguishing between ad man and ladies' man.

The Harry Crane moment is coming!

Great episode, best of the half-season so far. We've got our direction. Change is coming, and maybe it's not that bad, maybe it's even good, but it's frightening. It was brilliant to see the show dangle the old magic, but it just doesn't work. They're trying the same thing, but the Don Draper mystique isn't always going to come through. They need to move on to something new.

    Stop brushing your hair!

They really need to put all the "next week on Mad Men" promos on the final season special features. Those are works of art that need to be preserved for posterity.

This week had a great balance of focus on all the main characyers who are struggling to fit in at McCann. It seems like Pete and Ted are the only comfortable ones. I'll be interested to see how Roger and Peggy respond. I feel terrible for Joan, but she was put in a position where there just weren't a lot of answers. She was invaluable at SC&P but there's no institutional memory to make her value clear to McCann. Now where does she go from here? She's got Bruce Greenwood, but she's not the woman who just wants a man anymore. She wants a career, and I'm not sure he's going to really understand that. The Joan of 1960 would have leaped at a rich, handsome man who wants to take her around the world, but for the Joan of 1970, it would be settling.

According to that guy's impression, Don Draper is Nixon.

Loved the narrow hallways at McCann, definitely emphasized the "walls are closing in on you" feeling that this episode was meant to convey. Also, Don's discomfort at having to refer to himself as being with McCann was fun to watch. Don has always loved to have the power speak for himself and not have himself speak for the power. His sudden departure came as no surprise to me and what he did next was totally believable considering his situation. One just has to wonder where his trip will end. And seeing Burt's ghost again was nice. I noticed the opening credits lacked any guest stars which had me guessing that something was up. Also, ending the episode with Bowie was awesome, really emphasizes the feeling that the 60s are truly over and that things will change.

Also, Meredith seems to have gained a fair amount of competence here. I think she was always this competent but that SC&P wasn't the best environment for her and that McCann Erickson is a better fit due to the added structure.

And I'll never look at Bert Cooper the same way again knowing that he had tentacle porn tucked away in his office. Ewwwww!!!

That picture's been shown since season one. There was a whole scene of Bert and Roger discussing it.

Ugh, I missed that last episode and I can't be bothered to look for it online. When does AMC usually repeat Mad Men during the week?
