    MADNESS ON CALIBOS 8
A tale of Master Dooku and his Padawan Qui-Gon Jinn
    by S. hartter

The bridge yawned before the two figures that walked across it in the early morning haze. It was a gigantic structure designed for mass foot and small vehicle traffic, but the cyclopean edifices that rose up for miles around dwarfed it. Mocked it. The buildings cast an unnatural shadow that made everything the same shade of blue though the sky high above was a luminous pink. The figures walked with purpose to the steps of a pyramid that looked as though the top third of it had been sheared cleanly off. Sun glinted off towers that rose out of the top of the temple. Behind the mounting bustle of flying machines of all size and purpose going about their business was another sound that was not really a sound in itself, but the sum of all the noises that occurred on Coruscant blending together into a kind of communal sigh.

The taller figure was clothed in dark robes that swished about his frame as he strode up the broad steps. His hood was drawn back to reveal jet-black hair run through with streaks of frost white in the center and sides. His beard, too, was striped with silver. His eyes were piercing, leaning towards sinister. The younger, smaller figure that followed close behind had dark robes as well, but not nearly the sooty hue of his companion?s. This figure wore the braid and lock of a padawan learner, or apprentice of the Jedi arts.

Jedi the two figures were. One, Master Dooku, was one of the most skilled and revered of his order. He was trained in the old ways in both fighting and mastery of the force. Even his lightsaber was crafted after those from an age long past when the Jedi fought mythic wars in the far-flung fringes of the galaxy. His apprentice, Qui-Gon Jinn, was revered for his aptitude as well, even for a padawan. Much insight he gained from his master over the years and through thousands of misadventures that found them both in favor of the Force time and time again.

As they neared the doors to the temple Qui-Gon secretly sought the re-assurance of the Force to quell his nerves.

?Ah, do not be afraid Qui-Gon. All things transpire according to the will of the Force. There is nothing you can do to alter your fate.? Dooku offered a warm smile to this young man he considered a son. ?Keep your mind here and now on the living force. ?

They crossed the expansive entrance chamber, which was awash in morning sun diffused through uncountable numbers of reflective panels that gathered light from the outside via thousands of windows. Dooku knew something of the matter at hand and while meditating he saw a great many things that were to transpire in the next few days. Some of the images were cryptic puzzles that he would hopefully unravel before the events presented themselves, but most of the impressions he received were allegorical and mostly understood by him. That is, he would know how certain situations unfold when confronted by them. Until then, the scatological meanings of things to come would lay dormant.

The elevator sped them up the shaft of the Jedi temple?s middle spire, the spire that contained the Jedi Council chambers at it?s apex. Qui-Gon always had a feeling of trepidation when it came to being in front of the Council. He felt as though sometimes their eyes burned through him like beams of radiation and in fact he knew that they could see inside of him, just as sometimes he caught glimpses of their inner selves. This happened more frequently as he grew older.

?You?re nervous. Relax.? Dooku straightened himself with an air of aristocracy evident in his movements. He was an aristocrat by blood. Heir to a dynasty that had its seat of power on his home world of Serreno. Since he was a child he had forsaken his family?s wealth in favor of the way of the Jedi. ?This will be an easy assignment by contrast. I spoke with Master Yoda briefly last evening, as you know, and he related to me the basic facts of the circumstance,? the elevator?s
