Season 3 of Bravo's Project Runway is set to premiere on July 12th. Since there are a group of us here that watch this show I thought it would be fun to have a thread where we could discuss it episode by episode. (Sola approved it too. ;) )

    [image=http://www.bravotv.com/_content/images/PR1_bios_jay.gif] [image=http://www.bravotv.com/_content/images/PR2_bios_chloe.gif] [image=http://www.bravotv.com/_content/images/PR2_bios_nick.gif] [image=http://www.bravotv.com/_content/projectrunway/home/pic_tim.jpg]

For those of you who haven't seen seasons 1 or 2 of Project Runway let me give you a quick description. The show is a reality based fashion design competition hosted by Heidi Klum. The contestants are aspiring designers, some just out of school and others already making their way in the business. In each episode they are given a new design challenge and a certain budget of money and time to design, shop for and construct an original garment. Their garments hit the runway and are judged by a panel of fashion world personalities (Michael Kors, Nina Garcia). The loser gets kicked off the show.
The final three get to show a collection of their original designs in New York's Olympus fashion week and compete for an array of prizes. Just getting to show a collection there is prize enough to me!

The charm of the program is getting to watch these people work through their design process and seeing them constructing their garments. Some challenges are incredibly short, like only having five hours to make a bathing suit or two days to construct a wedding gown. Obviously a lot of mayhem ensues between the contestants and it's a guilty pleasure to watch them sometimes bicker and/or goof around together.

    [image=http://img435.imageshack.us/img435/1733/kaynegillaspiethumb9tv.jpg]

The designers for Season 3 have already been announced. Their bios and pictures are up on Bravo's website: [link=http://www.bravotv.com/Project_Runway/bios]Season 3[/link]

[link=http://allprojectrunway.blogspot.com/2006/06/bios-on-s3-designers.html]Blogging Project Runway[/link], a terrific fansite, also has bios for each of them up as well. There are also links to their personal websites/blogs on the site's [link=http://bloggingprojectrunway.blogspot.com/]front page[/link].[hr]

So before Season 3 starts I thought we could talk about the first two. I was thrilled with the outcome of Season 1. Jay McCarroll was one of my favorites throughout the first season and I was so pleased when he won. Season 2's winner, Chloe Dao, was not my pick but her flawless construction techinques are certainly worthy of winning. (I was partial to Daniel V. and Nick :x .)

Who did you guys like and dislike? Were you happy with the winners? Did you love or hate Santino? :p And where the hell is my chiffon? :^O

I agree Obi-Dawn, I was also thrilled with the outcome of season one. I was hoping that Daniel would win season two but Chloe was still one of my favorites. I'm so upset that I missed most of the last episode though! I completely forgot about it and only managed to catch the very end :*( I'm just glad Santino didn't win...he definitely had a lot of...erhm...creativity but I couldn't stand a lot of his outfits, not to mention I thought he was really arrogant and irritating.

I can't wait until season three starts next week! I'm really curious about the previews/commercials for the show...they keep talking about a "scandelous runway first" and I have no idea what it could be.

Cailina, Bravo is re-running all of Season 2 today so you could catch the finale this evening! (It's also out on dvd now. I have to add that most of the special features on the dvd were taken from the Bravo website so it doesn't have much new stuff to watch. [face_plain] )
I was hoping Daniel V. would win season 2 as well. I thought his collection was so ready to wear and had many pieces in it that I could see myself purchasing. I think a lot of the details in his clothes got lost on the tv screen. When you see them in up close pictures they look better. :)
You can see pics from his collection at his site: here.

I forgot to post a link to this story that StarWars.com ran called 'Style Wars'. It was an interview with several of the season 2 designers talking about SW costumes. I thought it was cool and totally random! [face_laugh]

    Project Runway: Style Wars

(See, there is a SW connection. LOL!)

edit: Yeah, I wonder what the 'scandal' in the first season 3 episode will be. One promo shows Tim Gunn asking someone to leave. Maybe one of the designers or models does something against the rules and has to leave the show? Oh, the drama! I love it!

Ooo thanks for telling me that Bravo was running season two today! I've been fixated on the 3-day twilight zone marathon on the SciFi channel and probably wouldn't have noticed otherwise.

That article is great! I especially love the comment about the fake ewok fur coat.

I can't wait until next wednesday to find out what the scandel is. Bloggingprojectrunway pointed out that there are only 14 models on the website even though there are 15 designers which may have something to do with the the scandel. I have problems viewing the website so I haven't been able to look into it much.

Well my all time favourite so far is definetly Austin from season 1. The thing was every time I just screamed "I want that dress", that was when the judges complained that he was "too costumey". Of the three finalists in season 1 I definetly thing Jay was the best, he had such a style of his own that none of the other really had.

Hmm, when it comes to season 2 I spoiled myself so I knew quite early on that Chloe would win, but I still think that my favourites were Daniel V and Nick.

    I can't wait either!

I have to highly recommend Tim Gunn's podcasts for season 2 - they are hilarious and as the season progresses, he really dishes the dirt, and what you didn't see on camera. They are well worth listening to. You can find them on itunes under TV & Movies in the podcast section, or you can get them on Bravo's site by episode. Here's the first one (which also has a link to subscribe to them all)

    http://www.bravotv.com/Project_Runway_2/Episodes/Episode_1/Tims_Take/podcast.shtml

I hope he does them for season 3!

I liked the designers better in season 2, but I thought the season 1 runway show was way more impressive. I was underwhelmed by the season 2 show. Though I loved Santino's last dress - this one:

    http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d164/padawansguide/pr2finale_santino13_200.jpg

Did anyone else watch Project Jay? That was interesting as well!

Yes! I LOVED Project Jay, probably just because I love Jay - his personality, his style. He just reminds me of so many friends I've had over the years. I couldn't believe everything he went through to make that dress for Heidi Klum and then she didn't even wear it.
I'm looking forward to when his clothing line becomes available. Granted, I haven't been keeping super up to date on when that will be, but I'd be willing to buy his stuff if it's reasonably affordable.

And I second the recommendation for Tim Gunn's podcasts. I ate those up as soon as they would come online after every episode! Sometimes they were better than the show because he really divulges a lot. Tim was certainly the break out star of Season 2 so I'm excited to see him again in the show's third go-round.

    Obi-Anne,
I totally agree with you Obi-Anne. I loved so many of Austin's dresses and thought he deserved to be in the final three much moreso than Wendy. Ack! She could be horrid!
I think my favorite thing Austin did was the party dress for Banana Republic. It was so precious and feminine.
I hope Austin is able to make it in the business now. He belongs in fashion.

I also wanted to mention how much I really liked Kara Janx's final collection. As the fourth runner up she still got to show at Bryant Park because the fashion show itself took place before the epsiode revealing the final three aired. So no one in the fashion show audience knew who out of the final four were the actual final three. I felt that Kara's collection was actually the most creative out of them all. I remember some press articles speculating that she would win the whole show based on her final collection. Sadly, she did not make the final three....did the rest of you see photos of her collection? I kind try to find a link to them if you haven't. :)

And I just gotta rant about the season 2 episode where Nick got booted. I just saw it again and got mad all over! How could the judges let that jumpsuit Santino made slide by over the suit Nick did? There were problems with Nick's suit but, my goodness, it wasn't glued onto his model and the seams didn't come apart on the rumnway like Santino's stupid jumpsuit. ARGH!

Every week Santino could have taken muslin scraps off the floor and pinned them on his model, and still not be eliminated. Santino has personality to spare and the producers wanted/needed him to stay. Sure he was a one trick pony (how many dresses were in his final collection?) and all his stuff was too over the top, but he had "it" and so they kept him in.

I think that there were better contestants in Season 1 than in Season 2. I was underwelmed by everyone's final show for Season 2 and was impressed by all the Season 1 shows. Even Wendy put together a few decent outfits for her final (but I still think she is a waste of space). Austin's final show was too costumey, but had a few killer looks. I adored Jay's collection and Jay, and was glad that he won. But didn't he blow off the prize money?

A also really enjoy Tim Gunn's comments and dry humor.

I just powered through the season 1 DVD on Sunday while sewing :) I always wanted to watch this show but never seemed to flip by it when it was on (my sister in-law highly recommended it). I also had a soft spot for Austin, probably because of his background in costume design. No brainer, he deserved to be in the final 3 but Wendy played it soooo safe I had a feeling her outfit would be chosen for the grammy awards (she pretty much copied the blouse Nancy had on when they met her! By playing it safe and being unoriginal she got in.)

I felt badly for Wendy in the end. It's like, if she hadn't been such a witch to people and played the show like a game - she could have gotten much more support, encouragement, and respect from her peers and people in the industry. I don't like her, but I feel badly for people who fail to see the light when they have such a big opportunity given to them. She wasted it IMHO, and that's what made me sad.

I think I like this show because in the end, people are pretty much judged on what they produce as well as how well they sell themselves. I can't speak for season 2, but I also liked the way that Season one showed that if you are nice to people and work hard, good things will come to you one way or another.

It looks like Bravo is airing their 'Road to the Runway' special tonight at 9c/10e. I'm assuming it's the audition process for season three, which I thought wasn't going to air until tomorrow. Hmm.

I think most people who watched season 2 could see that Santino was being kept around for his over-the-top personality and imagination. Sadly, his weekly runway pieces did not hold up to some of the others that were knocked out of the competition before him. *cough* Nick, Emmett, Kara, Andrae *cough*
I really thought the third spot on the final runway should have belonged to Nick or Andrae. Their party dresses for the Nicky Hilton challenge were my favorites, far more than what Santino did, which looked so much lilke the first dress he did for the muslin challenge. Ah well...I think Nick is capitalizing quite well from his exposure from the show.

Welcome to watching Project Runway kay_dee! I hope you get a chance to watch season 2 as well. :)

Season 3 starts tomorrow! Is everyone on pins and needles? :p

    WHERE'S ANDRAE?

Sorry, I had to. XD I'm glad there's other fans of the show out around here and I can't wait till tomorrow night! As for favorite designers -- I'm definitely a fan of Jay and Austin from season one, and Daniel V. and Nick from season two... and as much as Santino ticked me off, he did make some cool outfits occasionally and was reaaaalllly funny. ;D

Obi-dawn- I agree I loved the Red Lobster story! I rewatched a lot of the season again when they reaired it all last week(including the last episode finally!) and that episode really cracked me up. Especially when Tim came in and was like "Santino, I want to hear more."

Now that I've finally seen the final episode I can comment on that one!
Overall, I liked Daniel's collection the best. Chloe had a few dresses that I really liked but she also had a few that I thought were hideous like that pink pouffy thing. Yuck. I didn't really like any of Santino's outfits..I think I liked his 13th outfit the best though.

I liked hearing what season one people were up to, and thought it was interesting how 'being nice' to people was a factor that would help lead to success (especially be nice to the judges - lol!)

I'm sure they'll rerun Road to the Runway - they tend to rerun things a lot. I missed it too. I will have to see if I can rind a rerun myself!

Santino was funny, because some of this outfits I loved, others were hideous, and still others were nice, but copies of what he'd already done. And his collection at the end was nothing like what I was expecting.

I would have loved to have seen Nick in the finals - I liked him a lot. He did help folks audition for 3 though, which is nice.

I liked the Red Lobster story too - the reunion show for season 2 was particulary funny, with the "What happened to Andrae" stuff and Andrae's sad/ackward/funny/ackward meltdown that went on forever. Good stuff!

I hope Tim Gunn is doing podcasts again!

Yep, it was 9c/10e. But you can catch it tonight before the actual show premieres. :D

It was fun to see the audition process and I think I already have a few favorites for season 3. I was surprisingly intrigued with Laura Bennet, maybe because I was amazed at how well put together she seemed with five kids at home! I only have one tiny baby and I usually can't even find time to change out of my pajamas! LOL!

It was great to see that Austin is working at Amsale designing wedding gowns. What a great position for him. :) And I can't wait for Jay's clothes to finally be available for sale.

I agree - I thought is was ironic that the challenge Austin kind of bombed on ended up having a judge who employed him. Again, it goes to show that it's better to just be respectful and nice to those judges/future employers. It seems like a good fit for him if he didn't want to do costume work.

I couldn't keep all the new contestants straight since I was playing with my pattern while watching the show. If the person who does Barbie doll clothes got on I'd be intrigued to see what they make. Oh my gosh, and the dude with the fake accent who declined to do season 2... if his designs suck as much as his attitude I'll be rooting for him to get the boot!

It will be interesting to see what Jay's line looks like and if in the end he has a good career out of all of this. It seems like the show was a good wake-up call for him (as far as career focus) and he really wants to do things right.

I'm a big fan of not burning bridges - as much as I might want to tell someone off, you really never know when you will encounter them again, and what position you might be in - Austin getting hired by that designer is a perfect example - you never know! And even if you are a Project Runway loser, you never know who might be impressed by your work! It's definitely good visibility!

I enjoyed the Road to the Runway special!

I have to go see if Tim has a Podcast for tonight's first episode too!

I really dislike Malan or Mulan, what ever his name is. His laugh is annoying and his attitude stinks. I hope they get rid of him fast. I liked Stacey's design, even though it was unfinished, you could see where it was going. I didn't like the shredded dress, looked like a bag-lady. The basket hat was a bit much, but the dress was interesting though. Good use of the materials he grabbed. The Duvet dress with the red buttons was nice as was the white one with the red ribbon and sparkly wall hanging (LOVED the back).

I hope they replace the things they ripped out their apartments LOL [face_laugh].
