I know that in order to make a custom saber out of aluminum you need to have a metal lathe (along with the knowledge of how to use it). I've seen on a thread about hilt making that someone mentioned getting a "mini-lathe" for about $300-500. Has anyone out there ever done this? If so, were you satisfied?

I'd say write in to Mr. Park of Parks Sabers. He did a design a few years back for me and it is something. He'll probably be able to help you out with some info there.

You also might want to visit the costumes/props forum. There is a couple of threads about this subject, someone over there should be able to help you. :D
