Well thank goodness that show got the important questions out of the way. :p

Darphus_Mon some nice theories there about Jedi and their weapons. If Luke tried to teach the diplomatic nature of the Jedi (as you say passive) and that backfired, now he knows he has to fight again. The aging reluctant gunfighter who now has to fall back on the very skills he swore he'd never use again.

He won't want to fight at all. He will refuse to leave with Rey and return to the fold. Though I have a strong feeling *someone* will appear to him and persuade him otherwise. Then he raises the X Wing from the depths.

Oh-ho-ho, that would be AWESOME to see...Luke is reluctant to come back, but does at the last minute (meaning the third act) and raises his X-wing from the ocean with a hint of Yoda's Theme playing interspersed with the Force Theme...goosebumps! =P~

Didn't the Disney shareholders meeting have footage of a hobbled xwing entering a hangar? ;)

If anyone who's seen that can vouch for one wing missing its laser cannon (that's what I see on the pinball machine) then we know who's driving.

Yes. I think that might be Luke in his crippled X-wing.

I just think - and I'm probably repeating myself - that the x-wing and the saber are two major symbols of where Luke is at when we meet him. One sunken, the other hidden, disused, broken or lost (I'm guessing). I'm guessing that by the end of 8 or 9 we will see Luke reclaim both, bringing down the house as he resolves his crisis of faith and rediscovers his mojo.

And if that's close to being right, those moments will be even more resonant because we were afraid Luke might never bounce back. Because he struggled.

Yeah, I think the submerged X-wing is being pushed in merchandise for a reason: it will rise out of the water as a symbol representing the return of Luke.

Perhaps his lightsaber is in the cockpit of the X-Wing. Maybe that's what Rey dives down to retrieve.

Yes, I wondered if it's something like that.

RJ said that certain points in the story are naturally ripe for rhyming. The sunken x-wing appears to be one of those. In ESB and TLJ we have a submerged X-wing keeping Luke on the planet, a hopeful seeking an exiled master. But the circumstances are now very different. It's not a rehash - it's the best of what George was getting at with the rhymes / a similar set up - a different outcome and context, giving us new meaning and drama. And I like the potential for charting where Luke is now. As a boy he refused to believe he could lift the ship. As a master, he knows he can, but won't. What could change his heart? What happened to challenge his faith like this? How amazing will John Williams mKe all this sound?

Incidentally, that's how you pull off a good callback: it echoes the scene in ESB but also has its own resonance in this film. Luke raises his X-wing, which he said was "impossible" 30 years earlier, showing how he is in a new phase. And then the additional layer is it signifies that Luke is now back in the game.

Yes. I thought the "it's true. All of it" is another great ST example of this.
