Mas Amedda - "You survived?"

Not trying to get off topic, look at what Palpatine is doing. Obi-Wan gave the reasons why the Jedi grew to distrust the Chancellor and interference in Jedi affairs was the last straw on top of attaining executive powers to keep him in office. Maybe they thought Sidious was influencing everyone in the Senate, especially at top, all the while not know just who Sidious really was. Terrible.

No one wouldn't expect Mas Amedda. He's not even a politician. I think the Jedi are looking for a politician in particular. They probably already have an inkling that Sidious is human, not alien so they are looking for a human politican as well but have no idea where to look.

 

The hunt for Sidious is depicted in James Luceno's Labyrinth of Evil. In LoE, the Jedi discover Sidious' hideout in The Works (the tower we saw at the end of AotC). Mace Windu, Shaak Ti, and an elite team of ARCs follow Sidious' trail to 500 Republica (the complex where Palpatine lives). Their search, however, is cut short by the Separatist's attack on Coruscant. The attack takes Mace and Ti away from the search. Captain Dyne and the ARCs, however, continue the search and eventually find Sidious. Before Dyne can relay this information to the Jedi, however, Sidious kills them all.

 

I read LabyRinth of Evil. The investigation begins when Obi-Wan and Anakin find a chair belonging to Nute Gunray that was used for Sidious's holo transmissions. In the end I remember Mace saying how the kidnapping of Palpatine was an inside job and that it was used to take heat from off of Sidious.

Well, Palpatine is the ULTIMATE political hypocrite. He's the guy who gets power by declaring to clean up politics, get rid of all the corruption and the delay and generally bring about a workable democracy once again. But all the time he is actually the one whos doing the corrupting. He is actually the one whos undermining Valorum. He is the one he is actually plotting to do away with democracy all together. The guy is the ultimate hypocrite! The survival of Mas Amedda is an early, powerful symbol that all is not right with Chancellor Palpatine.

and GL bases a lot of this stuff on different bits of history too, which is scary in a way. politics are mostly playground antics and bullying for economic reward and power.

In the novel "Cloak Of Decpetion" we find out that Palpatine was the one who got Mas Amedda his spot in the Senate. Palpatine's machinations to get Valorum out of office, resulted in Mas becoming the Vice Chairman or Vice Chancellor. Whatever his title is. In "Jedi Trial" and "Dark Rendezvous", we see that Mas is part of Palaptine's cabal. He's involved in a lot of Palpatine's dirty dealings. Along with Armand Isard, Sly Moore & Sate Pastage. Because Amedda was placed there by a Senate commitee, he was able to keep his position once Palpatine became Chancellor and then Emperor. I'd wager that "Dark Lord" or "Courscant Nights" will give us the last of Mas Amedda.
