I'm not sure I'm sold on Damon's super-exoskeleton, but hot damn, visually that film looks gorgeous.

District 9 is a sci fi masterpiece on par with Blade Runner and Alien on a tier of classics just below 2001 and Metropolis.

Elysium looks great. Blomkamp has a visual style that makes his films look different from everything else. I love his dystopic cyberpunk grunge combined with flawless visual effects. There are $200 + million budget movies that don't look half as convincing as the $30 million District 9, which consequently was immensely profitable. If he's vying to become the greatest living sci fi auteur, he's off to a decent start.

As one of a tiny crop of summer movies that isn't a comic book sequel or cartoon sequel other comedy/action sequel, it's one of the few I really want to see.

Blomkamp forever has an auto "take my money" card thanks to District 9.

Indeed. Having such a well-made SF flick with such a pittance of a SFX budget (by Hollywood standards) is simply amazing.

If Elysium is a success, one has to wonder what is it gonna take for Bill Gates or whichever responsible parties at M$ to reconsider their previous stance and simply throw this guy and Peter Jackson whatever money and leeway they need to simply make a Halo film a reality.

There's a surprising number of original sci fi films this summer, despite the usual comic book and sequel bloat:

    Oblivion
    After Earth
    Elysium
    Pacific Rim

It's harder to tell what Oblivion is really about, but that one looks like fun too. I have no idea about Pacific Rim.

Overall, it good be a great summer.

After Earth is by Shyamalan, though. He's hit and miss.

The Wolverine was originally my most anticipated film of the summer, but it looks like this wins.

The film looks great, but the Elysium habitat itself doesn't make much sense for a lot of reasons. Just from the point of view of physics: could the atmosphere be thick enough at that size to sustain humans, and could they really spin it fast enough to keep the atmosphere from leaking away without a roof? Or is there some unexplained force-field that holds in the air and pressurizes it?

Oblivion is a Tom Cruise movie. There's no way you could even pay me to see a Cruise film after his Scientology related shenanigans. The fact that Katie Holmes was married to him was a big reason why I never saw Batman Begins.

She has no problem watching the Redskins who have multiple players who have been arrested for drugs, domestic violence, etc.

Our team is pretty much mostly clean these days. Are you sure you're not talking about the Bengals? I mean they do lead the league on that (which is nothing to be proud of).

Plenty of people say they won't be seeing Ender's Game because of Orson Scott Card's virulent anti-homosexual politics.

The Elysium station looks like a variation on the Stanford Torus. Nice retro sci fi touch.
