Up until that uncrafty bud to his face by Maul's lightsaber Qui-Gon Jinn and Maul were even. I really don't see it that way. IMO, Qui-Gon was in trouble and he knew it. You can see it on his face. Maul was trying to separate them from the start. He hold his own against both Jedi with no problems at all. He kicked ObiWan and Qui Gon many times, and got only hit once. I don't see how he would have problems with Qui-Gon alone. He let Qui-Gon come after him. After the pause, you see him do some fancy blocks against Qui-Gon, showing he is in total control. Then he takes a pause, you see confidence and anger on his face, and fear on Qui-Gon one. Maul knows now he has him now. He goes for the kill and Qui-Gon is dead in seconds. Watch the movie again.
