Up until that uncrafty bud to his face by Maul's lightsaber Qui-Gon Jinn and Maul were even.

I really don't see it that way. IMO, Qui-Gon was in trouble and he knew it. You can see it on his face. Maul was trying to separate them from the start. He hold his own against both Jedi with no problems at all. He kicked ObiWan and Qui Gon many times, and got only hit once. I don't see how he would have problems with Qui-Gon alone.

He let Qui-Gon come after him. After the pause, you see him do some fancy blocks against Qui-Gon, showing he is in total control.

Then he takes a pause, you see confidence and anger on his face, and fear on Qui-Gon one. Maul knows now he has him now. He goes for the kill and Qui-Gon is dead in seconds.

    Watch the movie again.

Exactly. Maul was _enjoying_ the duel, thus his wicked grins. This was what he had trained for his entire LIFE.

ALso, the novelisation clearly states that obi-wan tapped the darkside; THIS is why maul was able to force push him, sith are more experianced in the adark side, and maul exploited this facet.

However, had obi-wan not drawn upon the dak side, he would have died as soon as he stepped out of the lsaer doors.

Lastly, many people seem to forget that Maul was a very young APPRENTICE. He was nothing close to fully trained, hence no force lightning. He was the same as obi-wan in ep1 in fact, or anakin in ep 2. Yet he still took on two jedi, and killed one MASTER, before succumbing to poor plot design. ;)
