Besides the fact that MVS is great, there's certainly a specific reason they cast him. His voice is very much like Chris Lee's, but I think moreso they wanted someone to play a character who was around during the prequels/Clone Wars. His age gives credence to that.

There was already a great Palpatine. Fantastic, in fact.

Heard a rumour discussion yesterday on RFR that Von Sydow may be playing a very small role as some kind of old codger from the Clone War who is a mentor/guardian to the new main character but doesn't travel with them.

MVS doing a Palpatine-like role w Driver as the underling would have great potential.
Next to Driver, MVS might b the actor I'm most intrigued to c in 7.

Sounds like he'll just be some old clone war vet that the young characters will look to when they find the lightsaber. Probably some old codger who hangs at the cantina from time to time, and this is where they'll meet with him. So much for the Pazuzu reference, though.

I understand. Out the window with that so... fairly certain Von Sydow is a Emperor Tarkin type.

It never seemed right - this is a role any actor can take. Von Sydow is recruited for something more significant.

I hope Mvs is not wasted on a part anyone could have done. He has sith lord or imperial commander written all over him!

I don't see it as wasting if there wasn't a role of an old Sith Lord or very old Imperial Commander in this particular film. MVS is 85 years old. You can't count on him being around too much longer. I'd just be thankful he gets to be part of AGFFA. Perhaps it would be a waste if there is an old mentor role in this movie and they didn't get the available MVS to play the part?

I was hoping Von Sydow would be playing Plagueis, and after rejuvinating his body, Driver would be playing his younger self. But alas, he'll be a cyborg, with probably two minutes of screen time. Yaaaaay.

Sorry, I responded earlier but it seems I made a mess of the post.

Stamp wasn't a part of the main cast, or announced as such like Von Sydow.

Okay....? What do you mean by main cast? Why is Max von Sydow part of Episode 7s main cast and not Terence Stamp part of Episode 1's main cast? Stamp got 13th billing. Sydow was 1 of 13 announced in April and 1 of 18 announced in total.

Because the announcement was for the main cast - Stamp isn't a main cast member. He is a supporting character.

Anthony Daniels isn't playing a supporting character? Peter Mayhew isn't playing a supporting character? Are Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Andy Serkis, and Max von Sydow all playing leads?

We don't who are leads and who are supporting in this group - but they are the main cast.

Stamp was never a part of the main cast in Episode I.

EDIT: Just got the house to myself - time to overdose on horror movies on Netflix;)

    • Liam NeesonasQui-Gon Jinn, aJedi Masterand mentor to Obi-Wan. When he discovers Anakin he insists that the boy be trained as a Jedi despite the Jedi Council's protests. Lucas originally wanted to cast an American actor in the role, but cast Irishman Neeson because he considered that Neeson had great skills and presence. Lucas said Neeson was a "master actor, who the other actors will look up to, who has got the qualities of strength that the character demands".[2]
    • Ewan McGregorasObi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon's young Jedi apprentice. He holds Qui-Gon in high regard but questions his motives at times. McGregor was cast from a shortlist of fifty actors, all of whom had to be compared to pictures of youngAlec Guinness, who portrayed the elderly Obi-Wan, to make a believable younger version.[3]McGregor had a vocal coach to help his voice sound closer to Guinness'. He also studied several of Guinness' performances, from his early work and theStar Warsmovies.[2]
    • Natalie PortmanasQueen Padmé Amidala: Amidala, the 14-year-old Queen of Naboo, hopes to protect her planet from a blockade by the Trade Federation. Over 200 actors auditioned for the role.[4]The Production notes stated; "The role required a young woman who could be believable as the ruler of that planet, but at the same time be vulnerable and open". Portman was chosen especially for her performances inThe Professional(1994) andBeautiful Girls(1996), which impressed Lucas.[2]He stated, "I was looking for someone who was young, strong, along the lines ofLeia[and] Natalie embodied all those traits and more".[2]Portman was unfamiliar withStar Warsbefore being cast,[2]but was enthusiastic about being cast as a character she expected to become a role model. Portman said, "It was wonderful playing a young queen with so much power. I think it will be good for young women to see a strong woman of action who is also smart and a leader."[5]
    • Jake LloydasAnakin Skywalker, a nine-year-old slave boy and a skilled pilot who dreams of becoming a Jedi. Hundreds of actors were tested[2]before the producers settled on Lloyd, who Lucas considered met his requirements of "a good actor, enthusiastic and very energetic". ProducerRick McCallumsaid that Lloyd was "smart, mischievous and loves anything mechanical—just like Anakin".[6]
    • Ian McDiarmidasSenator Palpatine/Darth Sidious, a Senator of Naboo who is eventually elected Chancellor of the Republic. McDiarmid was surprised when Lucas approached him 16 years afterReturn of the Jedito reprise the role of Palpatine because he had assumed that a younger actor would play the part in the prequel films.[7]
    • Ahmed BestasJar Jar Binks, a clumsyGungan, exiled from his home and taken in by Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. He accompanies them throughout the film. Best was hired after Gurland saw him on aStompperformance in San Francisco.[6]Best was originally intended to provide motion capture data but his offer to voice the character was accepted. On the set, to provide references for the actors, Best was clothed in a suit made of foam and latex and a headpiece. Best's filmed performance was later replaced with the computer-generated character.[8]Best frequently improvised movements to make Jar Jar look as clumsy and comedic as possible.[6]
    • Pernilla AugustasShmi Skywalker, Anakin's mother who is concerned for her son's future and allows him leave with the Jedi. August, a veteran of Swedish cinema, was chosen after auditioning with Liam Neeson. She was afraid of being rejected because of her accent.[8]
    • Ray ParkasDarth Maul, aZabrakand Darth Sidious' Sith apprentice who uses a double-bladed lightsaber. Amartial artschampion with experience in gymnastics and swordfighting, Park was originally a member of the stunt crew.[6]Stunt coordinatorNick Gillardfilmed Park to demonstrate his conception of the lightsaber battles. Lucas and McCallum were so impressed with the test tape that they gave Park the role of Maul. His voice was considered "too squeaky" and was dubbed over.[8]He was voiced byPeter Serafinowicz.
    • Anthony DanielsvoicesC-3PO, a protocol droid built by Anakin. It lacks a metal covering in this film; R2-D2 refers to it as being "naked". A puppeteer dressed in a color closely matching the background—in a manner similar to the Japanese puppet theaterBunraku—manipulated a skeletal C-3PO figure attached to his front while Daniels read his lines off-camera. The puppeteer was erased from the film during post-production.[6][9]
    • Kenny BakerasR2-D2, an astromech droid that saves Queen Amidala's ship when other droids fail. Before the film's production started, fans campaigned on the Internet to retain Baker as R2-D2; Lucas replied that the actor would remain. Baker is used for scenes where R2-D2 bends forwards and backwards and wobbles from side to side. Robots and a digital replica were used in other shots.[10]
    • Silas CarsonasNute Gunray, the Viceroy of the Trade Federation who leads Naboo's invasion and tries to force Queen Amidala to sign a treaty to legitimize the occupation. Carson also portrays three minor characters: Jedi MasterKi-Adi-Mundi, Trade Federation SenatorLott Dod, and an ill-fated pilot (the role Carson originally auditioned for).[11]Carson got the role because another actor was uncomfortable with the costumes used by the Trade Federation characters, which were hot, exerted a lot of pressure on the bearer, and took about 15 minutes to apply. Gunray'sThaiaccent was chosen after Lucas and McCallum listened to various languages to decide how the Neimodians would speak.[12]
    • Hugh QuarshieasCaptain Panaka, Queen Amidala's chief of security at Theed Palace. Quarshie considered the part "a good career move" and a production that would be fun to make.[13]
    • Andy SecombevoicesWatto, a junk dealer on Tatooine who owns Anakin and his mother as slaves. The character's design was an amalgam of rejected ideas; Watto's expressions were based on video footage of Secombe's voice acting, photographs of animation supervisorRob Colemanimitating the character, and modeler Steve Alpin saying Watto's lines to a mirror.[14]
    • Lewis MacLeodvoicesSebulba, an aggressive, scheming Podracer who is Anakin's rival. Lucas described Sebulba's design as "a spider crossed with an orangutan crossed with a sloth",[15]with a camel-like face, and clothing inspired by medieval armor.[16]
    • Frank OzvoicesYoda, the centuries-old leader of the Jedi Council who is apprehensive about allowing Anakin to be trained. Yoda was mostly portrayed as a puppet designed byNick Dudmanbased onStuart Freeborn's original design. Oz controlled the puppet's mouth and other parts were controlled by puppeteers using remote controls.[8]Lucas fitted Yoda's filming around Oz's schedule as he finished and promotedIn & Out.[17]A computer-generated Yoda is featured in two distant shots.Warwick Davisportrays him in the scene in which Obi-Wan becomes a Jedi Knight.[18]Lucas said he originally wanted to use a full-time digital Yoda, but the attempts did not work well enough. OnThe Phantom Menace 's Blu-ray version, which was also used for the 3D re-release, a CG Yoda similar to the one from the other prequels is used instead.[19]
    • Samuel L. JacksonasMace Windu, member of the Jedi Council who also opposes the training of Anakin. After Jackson expressed interest in appearing in aStar Warsfilm, he was approached by cast director Robin Gurland to play Windu.[6]
    • Terence StampasSupreme Chancellor Finis Valorum, the current Chancellor who commissions Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon to negotiate with the Trade Federation Viceroy. Lucas described the character as a "good man but he's beleaguered—a bit like[Bill] Clinton".[20]
    • Brian BlessedvoicesBoss Nass, the leader of the Gungan tribe who allies with the Naboo and defeats the Trade Federation. Blessed originally auditioned for the role ofSio Bibble, the Governor of Naboo,[21]for which he was considered "too loud".[22]Casting director Robin Gurland approached him to play Nass because it was a "bigger than life" character with "a kind of bravado".[23]Blessed described Nass as a "reluctant hero",[22]and a fun role to play.[24]
    • Greg ProopsandScott Capurrovoice Fode and Beed, the two headed announcer of the Boonta's Eve Race. The actors were filmed wearing make-up and blue bodysuits so their heads could be joined in a computer-generated body. The visual effects crew did not like the original results and crafted Fode and Beed as an entirely computer generated alien.[25]
    • Sofia Coppolaas Saché:,one of Amidala's handmaidens. Sofia, daughter of Lucas' long-time friend and creative partnerFrancis Ford Coppola, considers Lucas as "like an uncle to me". As she prepared the script for her directorial debutThe Virgin Suicides, Sofia heard Lucas would make a newStar Warsfilm and asked him if she could accompany him during filming. Lucas offered Coppola a role in the royal entourage, which she accepted because it "seemed like a good vantage point to watch without getting in the way".[26]
    • Ralph Brownas Ric Olié:, the Queen's starship pilot
    • Steven Speirs as Captain Tarpals, a Gungan general
    • Keira Knightleyas Sabé, one of Queen Amidala's handmaidens
    • Oliver Ford Daviesas Sio Bibble, the governor of Naboo
