Starting in July, the library will be charging for the use of meeting rooms.
This is the email the library sent:
You may have heard that the City of Virginia Beach and the Virginia Beach Public Library are facing serious budget constraints in the coming fiscal year starting July 1, 2010. As a result, the City Manager?s recommended budget has a series of proposals that, if adopted by City Council on May 11, will impact meeting room use at the libraries. They include:

    · Closing all libraries, except the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library, at 7:00 p.m., instead of 9:00 p.m., on Monday through Thursdays. The Central Library will continue to be open until 9:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday. All libraries will continue to open to the public at 10:00 a.m. on Monday through Saturday and all locations will continue to be open on Friday and Saturday until 5:00 p.m.

    · Closing the Kempsville and Princess Anne Libraries on Sunday from September through May (libraries are currently not open on Sundays during the summer). However, the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library will continue to be open on Sunday from 1:00-5:00 p.m. (September ? May).

    · Implementing meeting room use fees of $10 per hour for a meeting room at any library and $25 an hour for use of the auditorium at the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library. These new fees will apply to all groups except City, Commonwealth or Federal government agencies.

The enclosed/attached policy outlines eligibility, the fee structure, the location and size of meeting rooms, as well as the details associated with requests for reservations, the collection of fees, and cancelling of a meeting room reservation.

Since we do not, as yet, have a centralized meeting room booking process, all requests for reservations must continue to be made at each individual Virginia Beach Public Library. If you are making a reservation request on May 17th for the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library, we will accept reservations by telephone (757-385-0110), fax (757-431-3018), or e-mail (ECLMeet@vbgov.com) during the hours of 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome when the library opens at 10:00 a.m.

We understand that these changes in our meeting room use policy will be impactful to your organization and we regret the need to implement them. Although the first day of room registration for the July-December 2010 period will not begin until May 17th, please do not hesitate to contact us at 757-385-0110 if you have any questions.

We need to start searching for a new meeting place. I do however have good news. We will not be charged to use the library for Galacticon. The library has also given us a date, Saturday March 26th. So we have our Galacticon date early. We should start planning soon.

Reminder that the June meeting is elections and dues in the amount of $20.00 are due.
