I adore Maz, and hope to see much more of her, but this would've been a bad idea.

The major revelation here is the awakening of Rey. It would seem odd for Snoke and Kylo to be making a big deal about this strong, stirring Force awakening if you have Maz so powerful that she's just pulling down ceilings.

Why are we searching for Luke to turn the tide? Why haven't Snoke or Kylo gone after this powerful Force user whose living right out in the open? Why wouldn't Maz go after Kylo, since she's got this strong Force power?

Imbuing her with this level of Force power opens up more issues than this film could handle.

^ I agree. Its better that Maz isn't presented as being really strong in the force. It would contradict everything.

Seems obvious to me what has happened here.

    There has been a compromise.

Disney/LFL got cold feet about going the whole way with this story and that was because of fan reactions to certain aspects of the trailers.

They basically neutered the movie, so now we will get a run of the mill predictable story with a predictable hero(ine) and a predictable outcome.

Pretty sad and predictable really. Oh well.

    What could have been!

I presume you are kidding -- as this is an awful lot to know unless you work with JJ or at Disney

As for Maz -- um, there are other sects of Force [ie Nightsisters] users and perhaps when Maz was born over 1000 years ago the Jedi weren't cradle robbers -- and she just went on her merry way?

She "knows" the Force -- and it remains to be seen to what extent or exactly what that means.

This is a work of fiction designed to make money.

Of course decisions will be made with that in mind.

Sure. But your post indicates you know something that took place that you could not possibly know for sure. Add to that a opinion seemingly biased due to what sounds like a unsatisfactory view of TFA and on a legal basis -- at least a Disclaimer would need be applied.

What seems "obvious" to you seems nothing of the sort to me - possibly due to my limited understanding of the film making process that you seem quite confident about. So I am saying unless you work in the industry and are making a general assumption - you'd have to work with JJ or Disney to know for sure of what you speak.

SexyRey says 'Maz is pink.' In that case she'd be human and would be played by Kenny Baker in a dress.

TigerCraneFist says 'Maz is yellow-orange (maybe a bit gold)'. It's Yoda with a suntan then.

DML3 says 'looks like Yoda in a hat and goggles.' It's Yoda. In disguise.

As for anyone who questions anything in this movie:

Thought I heard somewhere she was invited to train and turned them down. Don't have any confirmation on this so far but I hope it's true.

Guys, the Visual Dictionary confirms that Maz is Force-sensitive. Just for those of you on the fence about whether or not she was.

Han says in the film something like "she's run this watering hole for 1000 years".

Yeah. "Relax kid, she's run this watering hole for over 1000 years." Which means that she's older than Yoda was when he died, interesting.

I still wonder if she and Luke know each other?

    Definitely.

Yoda was only like 2' something. Maz looks to be at least twice that.

I think you are right in terms of it taking away from the specialness of our Jedi/Sith heroes and villains. It's kinda like wondering if the best QB ever never actually played the position. Did he become an electrician instead? What if we saw the electrician outthrow Tom Brady? How would we feel about Tom's ability after that?

As if we needed it! That debate's thankfully over. Everyone, even the most extreme of the doubters, ultimately had to accept that their info was legit.

It would also beg the question of why Kylo/ the First Order don't try to seize her. Perhaps a scene along those lines was cut too. Maz being pursued, and then the Resistance shows up. Probably too much was required to set her up, and then have her scenes at the Resistance Base, etc., and this probably felt like it was not only taking away from Rey's awakening, but also, the quest to find Luke.

I mean, if we're shown that Maz has significant force powers herself, it might undercut the importance of finding Luke. And it might undercut the idea that Luke is the "last Jedi." I mean, sure, Maz is no Jedi. But she could be!

Accept it as opinion. We will see in due course regardless and if I am wrong I will be first to admit it.
