Sorry if a similar thread already exists - I've tried searching but this site is running so badly at the moment that the search won't work - what's going on with the site? Everything taking ages to load...

I'm trying to view TLJ more positively, but things like Maz's treatment in the film are holding me back.

TFA sets up Maz as a very interesting character - been around a long time, knowledge of the Force, the light and the dark. Connected. Trusting relationship with Han and Chewie. Has the TESB lightsaber and a story to tell about it.

And yet her involvement in TLJ is limited to nothing but explaining the crazy code breaker stuff via videolink. It felt like such a let-down and is a prime example as to why so many people are left with this feeling that RJ virtually disregarded the many interesting questions posed by TFA.

I'm still prepared for Ep.IX to 'reveal all', but when you've been waiting two years for answers, having to wait another two years in the slim hope those answers might still be coming, is incredibly frustrating.

And what was that union fight she was involved in? I couldn't hear the dialogue very clearly.

I was surprised Maz appeared in TLJ at all since she wasn't marketed for TLJ at all imo.

Maz was a waste in the movie and the whole talking while fighting during a trade dispute was stupid. Quite frankly, they could have used Lando in that role telling them about CB, or had him as the target at the casino

Connective tissue to TFA, and that’s all really.

Thank you. It would've seemed like fanservice, but it would have been a great way to get Billy Dee Williams back in the game. I know he's not in good shape physically, but I'm sure he could've done fine.

It just shows how ridiculous Hollywood is when Maz only makes a cameo and Lupita Nyong'o gets 8th billing.

It would've been a crowd storming easter egg if the camera panned around and there was ol' Mr Smooth sat at a table, makes a comment and the scene moves on. Finn and Rose don't know who he is so there was no great need to bring him into the plot at this stage. Having said that when the Falcon is flying through the underground of Crait who better than Lando to pilot the ship?

I like that they called up Maz for a connection in an unscrupulous business. Other than that it was just a voice over cameo. It does give us an idea of where Maz is after losing her bar. We can assume she's still trying to set up a middle ground between outlaws and she's in the middle of a deal gone wrong in this

I think it's probable Maz will also be in episode IX in a larger role.

It seemed to me that Rian just needed a way to get Finn and Rose to Canto Bight, but didn't want to be overly bothered by the details or Maz for that matter.

Honestly, I'm still wondering how she got away during the First Order attack on her caste.

I mean, she just kind of disappeared.

Ugh, Maz's role was like something out of a video game cut scene... not only that, the info she gave the others was fairly worthless.

If you ride Star Tours at the Disneyland, it kind of goes into more detail of what she's doing.

Plus, it shows she was busy, and why she didn't immediately answer the Resistance call at the end of the film.

One of the most interesting characters from The Force Awakens, reduced to a comic cameo to facilitate a needless sub plot.

Am I the only one who wondered why the hell it was Poe who contacted Maz? As far as we know he has never met her, and Finn has only met her once (so anyone contacting her really was a stretch). This was just a we have to shoehorn this character in here somewhere.

Totally pointless to convey a totally pointless subplot, that did nothing but waste time and divert the attention of the film. What did Rian actually try to
achieve with her scene? Or was he forced by the producers to insert Maz? Obviously she was invented for TFA to move the plot forward but then at least she was a real character with a bit of depth. This is the sort of inclusion in TLJ that has the potential to totally ruin the experience.

I expect him to meet her in his comic.

Besides, unlike Rey and Finn, who are new to all this.

Poe has been around the block in all these unseen adventures.
