Well a lot of the problem with the modern art world it the fact that it is (perceived or real) so insular and so far up its own rectum that most artists just produce stuff that will appeal to the art elite.
And much of the work produced seems to require no or few artistic skills.
David Hockney said that the RCA asks him every couple of years what they should change in the curriculum - and every couple of years he replys : 'drawing'.

It would seem to be more useful than any other skills they pick up - Young British Artists obviously can't make up beds!
