Easily. Stuff happens afterwards in the original stories, too. :p

A sequel isn't going to be "The Passion of the Christ 2" any more than the second HP film was "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 2".

This is the roguelike RPG I'm waiting for.

Ramza: The Harrowing of Hell would indeed make for the greatest movie ever made.

It would be like Aliens, with the Son of God as Ellen Ripley, the human race as the colonists, the demons as the xenomorphs, and Satan as the Queen.

I'm not sure if the Christian Right was like the movie, though. They seem to get off on the conceit of eternal damnation.

It's interpreted by some denominations to be limbo or the spirit world and not hell, as in the outer darkness and eternal damnation.

I'm sure whatever Gibson comes up with will be interesting. That said, I wasn't a huge fan of The Passion, but I enjoyed Apocalypto(even though he didn't quite get the clans/tribes right).

Being boringly serious, I figure making a St Paul movie would be a fine sequel.
If Jesus was ANH, St Paul was Empire. He expanded the mythology and theology. And he also ended up crucified, upside down. So Mel gets to do a bit of torturing and bloodshed, which he likes in a movie.

Err, that was St. Peter. St. Paul, as a Roman citizen, was decapitated by a sword.

Peter was crucified upside down, Paul had his head lopped off.

Monty Python's Life of Bryan was certainly more plausible and historically accurate than an eventual Passion of The Christ's sequel...

I haven't seen it, but there's a film called Risen that had a limited release earlier this year. I suppose you could watch that one as a sequel.

"Follows the epic Biblical story of the Resurrection, as told through the eyes of a non-believer. Clavius, a powerful Roman Military Tribune, and his aide Lucius, are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Yahshua in the weeks following the crucifixion, in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem."

I saw that actually. It was fairly decent and one of the better faith-based films I've seen. It was still tedious, and Joseph Fiennes still can't hold a candle to his brother.
