I'm starting the vote for this one. Haven't done that before. There's a reason, though...

? I've been talking about him the whole time through. His CGI is pure artwork. Absolutely breathtaking. He's got distinct personality. And from what I've already said about him, I've made myself believe this: he's the best made CGI character. To date. I love the organ scene, with the heavy music descending over the screen. While Gollum is masterfully done as well, and deserves credit, he's not my favourite character in this match-up. Davy is.

 

Gollum. He stole the show from pretty much everyone in LOTR. There was talk of nominating Andy Sirkis for an Oscar. Blends perfectly into every scene. Is an acccomplishment in CGI that will not be outsdone for a long time.

 

Before I watched the extras on the TTT:EE I might have voted for Gollum
but since I have, he's getting on my nerves
besides, sometimes Serkis (or Jackson) overdid it with the performance
Nighy makes Jones almost feel like a gentleman under the tentacles (by manner, certainly not by behaviour ) and he's got more than two-and-a-half emotions (even though "he carved out him heart" )

Gollum

When Frodo calls him Smeagol for the first time in TTT, the animation of Gollum's face is perfect. Gollum was the first CGI character I found to be believable on screen; I could forget that he was a generated image and accept him as part of the surroundings. Truly successful

I don't know. I think Gollum probably has a bigger personal following than Davy Jones. Of course, Yoda has the big personal following thing going too, so it could be that those who vote for Davy Jones will be voting for quality...

Meh. Gollum and Davy Jones are both better than Yoda anyway. I've been maintaining all along that CG Yoda failed to fulfill the one absolutely critical purpose he had, and I still believe that's true. But, that aside, I've gone back and looked now to be sure I'm not being unfair, and he really simply isn't as good as the other two. Gollum and Davy Jones achieve a level of realism and life that Yoda just hasn't got.

Admittedly, this is about favorites rather than bests, so the personal following thing obviously enters heavily into it. But in any competition where computer generation is a criterion, it's difficult to see anything else over the unprecedented level of realism and achievement that is Davy Jones, so I vote that way even though I am more personally attached to the Gollum character.

But no matter how you slice it, Yoda should not win.

I agree that Yoda should not win. I stopped voting for him recently. However, must of the sentiment I find on these boards is that people don't like LotR (the movies). I haven't seen much against Pirates, so I feel that Davy Jones has a better shot at beating the lil green one.
